Purely speculating here:

The patriot act made it so that the US government had ownership of any data that passed through US land. Is this just a way for the US to monitor all traffic going through into and out of Russia?

It's actually a big deal inside any privacy space outside of the US. For instance, any healthcare data in Canada can't go through the US. Same thing for EU countries. Bigger corporations like MS know this and have data centers available for those countries to access within their own borders.

Srsly Wrong's latest podcast talked a lot about how oil companies funded grassroots pro oil campaigns and then linked it to our larger culture and how we can't trust anyone anymore.

I never thought I'd be able to say not trusting each other is big oils fault, but here we are

I agree with you, but you might find the history of Zionism interesting. Before Israel, there was a sizable portion of Zionists that didn't want Israel to exist in the middle east. There were also Zionists that didn't want a 'state'. They thought it was more important to have a safe place for a sizable Jewish population. There's probably a lot of flavors of Zionism that you'd agree with. It's the dominant Israeli Zionism that's horrible.

It's a lot easier to say 'Zionist' though. Just thought I'd share in case you weren't aware.

Southern Ontario checking in. We did that too. 'Gyped' and 'indian giver' were also things.
Although, I had an indigenous friend one summer who quickly became popular because he was very funny. He used to use slurs against all of the white kids all of the time. It was the most effective anti racist tactic I've ever witnessed. None of us were comfortable using a lot of the slurs that were baked into our culture, unless it was with our friend and a smile.

Jaytreeman ,

Exactly. All we can do is try to improve.

I often forget that DNA evidence has been much more important regarding wrongful conviction than any other facet.

I grew up just outside south Detroit. Those network television shows were nuts. It was the 90s. Crime was everywhere in Detroit. This was the era of hundreds of buildings being burned on devils night, and every single crime was done by the same guy. I remember his description clearly. 5'9-6'. Short hair. Between the ages of 20-35.

Jaytreeman ,

Guy got 87%.
You can't get 87% of people to agree on pizza toppings for the night

Jaytreeman ,

(Assuming you're American)

Lots of Americans seem to think that state media is a bad thing. Lot's of countries get it right. Especially after it's first been implemented.
I'd often rather have a government (obviously not Russia, China, or in my case Canada) over some oligarch controlling it. Murdoch hasn't exactly been doing good things wherever he goes

Ethylene glycol.
It's toxic to mammals.

It's like they have the opinion that they got it perfect first try.
I'm not a fan of Apple style the same but slightly improved each year, but for a. Investment like that, I want there to be a difference in build quality at the lowest end of the spectrum.
Tesla just pushes the exact same thing with new promises of full auto driving

Jaytreeman ,

I've heard, so take with a grain of salt, that China likes Chiang's ideology that China should be reunified.
The disagreement was who should be in power after.
The removal of the statues somehow indicates they don't want reunion.

Jaytreeman ,

The issue with Israel isn't the quality of their weapons and munitions. It's the quantity.
This article explains how they don't have many fighter pilots
Israel has something like 35000 people in it's air force. That's a tiny air force. Most of those people are going to be in some type of support role. The article talks about the most elite squadron being only 40 people. Losing one person is arguably a bigger loss than the plane. After all, doesn't matter if you have a plane if no one can fly it

Jaytreeman ,

There's lots of ways to do that safely.
Catios are a thing.
My partner has fostered multiple cats and now has two. The older one has seen some shit and appreciates being a housecat. She has zero interest in going outside, but she feels safe basking in the small catio while we have a hot drink on the patio.
Maybe in your very specific case it's OK for the cats to be outside because you have some type of electric fence to keep the coyotes or foxes out. This is very similar to dogs on a leash. The general rule is keep them on a leash. But one in a thousand dog owners has trained their remarkable pup to not need the leash. I've seen it, but the rule is dog on a leash for the 999 of us.

The guys unhinged. He puts Matt groening orbiting the center of some great conspiracy while at the same time his main point is correct.

I've seen people fall down these rabbit holes and have them trigger something that drives them away from sanity. It's sad af

Fascism doesn't exist without capitalism. There's been vicious and authoritarian socialist/communist states, but not fascist

I've worked in factories before. I'm not saying you have to be smart to work in a factory, but if you spend too much time in one you won't be.

All of the West should be ashamed for giving them hope for 1 1/2 years. All of the cynics knew the western funding was going to dry up. It was only a matter of time before a shinier newer conflict rose up

Pearl was adopted by my partner 3 years ago. At that time we couldn't pet her. She now jumps onto my lap (1 year ago) and sits on my partners chest with her ass in my partners face (3 months ago).
It's really neat seeing them get more comfortable and how long it takes.

Jaytreeman ,

Maybe I should do that. It's cheaper than a ring.

Given his circumstances, I'm surprised he hasn't given up territory for the purpose of saving his people's lives.

They're going to lose. Is it better for Ukraine to exist in a diminished capacity or not at all?

They could rush NATO membership.

Israel has attacked 4 different countries in it's 'war against hamas.' It's attacked, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Palestine. They're aggressively trying to escalate.

Delay ‘not credible any longer’: Recognition of state of Palestine by Ireland and some EU states expected in coming weeks (www.irishtimes.com)

It is understood that Ireland and some other EU states will announce formal recognition of Palestine once a peace initiative – expected in the coming weeks – is under way. Sources were reluctant to put a date on this but said it would be “sooner rather than later”, and was a matter of weeks rather than months....

Jaytreeman ,

I see this as very positive. If people want to band together and have a state. Why is anyone standing in their way? Same thing with seceding.
It's nice that countries are starting to do that for Palestine. It's kind of wild that it's taken this long

Railroad agrees to $600 million settlement for fiery Ohio derailment, residents fear it’s not enough (www.opb.org)

Per this source, a 25 mile radius includes 585,000 people. That means (before lawyer fees so imagine half in actuality), Norfolk-Southern wants to give $1,000 per person for permanently poisoning not only their property but their body which is now forever scarred. This was filed for approval by the Plaintiff (people hurt) but as...

What stops a class action, against whatever government that's responsible, for settling for so little. Shouldn't the company be on the hook for everyone's cancer treatment. At the very least.

Taiwan has always been a bit fascy.

When Kai Cheks party split from the CCP, he ordered the killing of any communists still inside his own party effectively starting a civil war. Kai chek eventually lost and fled to Taiwan where he ruled until his death.

That bit of history is crazy interesting and also illuminating regarding current Chinese policy. I'd really encourage anyone to read up on it

I've met a bunch of Ukrainians online that just want the war done. They don't care who wins. They're seeing their family and friends die and they just want it to stop.

People seem to forget that this thing started because two oblasts didn't want to be part of Ukraine anymore. Russia escalated it for sure, but it still started as a separatist movement inside Ukraine.

Jaytreeman ,

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donetsk_People's_Republic

There's a luhansk one as well.
Russia backed those separatists. Russia escalated it, but there was a sizable portion of the population that wanted out of Ukraine. I have zero idea how they feel about the 2022 annexation.

Jaytreeman ,

I really thought about putting some type of disclaimer about how this was a response I expected.
I regret not putting that down.
The online discourse on this is so black and white it's ridiculous.
There can be multiple reasons for things. Doesn't mean that any side is some type of white Knight.

Could be. There's lots of shills and bots out there

Russian FSB says US, UK and Ukraine behind Moscow attack (www.euronews.com)

The director of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Alexander Bortnikov, said on Tuesday that the US, UK and Ukraine were behind the Moscow concert hall attack that killed at least 139 people on Friday - despite repeated claims of responsibility by Islamic State....

There's been reports of Odessa being attacked with some type of long range explosive.
If you've been paying attention to the fronts, those usually indicate that Russia is putting boots on the ground soon.
Russia needs to close Ukrainian access to the sea. They're losing too many ships to the sea drones. They need to take Odessa to win.
It would be the biggest escalation in this war since the second invasion of 22.

Why the instant hostility? This isn't reddit. Calm down

The Israeli operatives have been out in full swing lately.
Evidence that some rape happened is a lot different from a mass scale rape attack.

This could have turned into such an easy win.
If they'd let compassion drive their actions, hamas would have lost lots of support

Is it normal to forget your own age?

I’m still in my 20s, but as of a few years ago I started forgetting what’s my exact age. I always have to stop and recalculate it each time someone asks me. I get asked fairly infrequently, but when I do it’s a bit weird/embarrassing that I have to say “wait, let me calculate”. (I know when I was born, of course.)...

Because you've got some naive beliefs about the state of the world ...
We should just agree to block each other. Cheers

Voting is the minimum. The reason there's no decent alternative is because people vote and think they did their part.

If you're voting for the lesser of two evils and that lesser is actively supporting genocide, but you're complaining about people that are saying 'both sides bad'...

'If you're curious what you would do to stand up against genocide, you're doing it now' - a braver man than me
