HughJanus ,

You know, these are the kind of blatant lies that ensures that no one ever believes you or your “team”.

HughJanus ,

What does German politics have absolutely anything to do with Musk admitting that he’s a Nazi?

HughJanus ,

I care what words mean. This person clearly does not. That’s the problem.

HughJanus ,

That’s not the same thing and that’s not what he said. Why don’t you think the truth is important?

HughJanus ,

It’s not even remotely the same thing, and lying about it only hurts your cause.

HughJanus ,

Except no one has proven me wrong. Because it didn’t happen.

HughJanus ,

No deep opinion required. It’s a fact. He did not admit to being a Nazi.

Feel free to step back and consider the impact you have when blatantly lying about what someone else said. Especially when it comes to one of the most horrific organizations in human history.

Apple blames iOS 17 bugs and apps like Instagram for making iPhone 15s run hot (www.theverge.com)

Apple has acknowledged user complaints that iPhone 15 and 15 Pro phones are overheating, reports Forbes, but said that contrary to speculation, it has nothing to do with the phone’s hardware design. Forbes noted an update to Instagram has already rolled out with version 302, released September 27th, to address some of the...

I love people putting out the “everyone is wrong because I didn’t have a problem” response like there weren’t tens of millions of devices sold.

HughJanus , (edited )

I pretty much just assume “Free To Play” games are full of microtransactions, is that wrong?

E: to be clear, I don’t think microtransactions are an inherently bad thing. In fact, if people want to make games where other people with more money front the costs of development, I’m all about it.

What I hate is being reminded every 5 minutes that it has garbage skins that I can pay IRL money for.

HughJanus ,

Yeah, the question for me is “are they shoving those things you can purchase down your throat every 2 minutes?” because I find that disgusting.

HughJanus ,

Which is why I avoid them

HughJanus ,

Perfect timing. Netflix DVD just shut down yesterday.

Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

Edit2: Writing this from Pop_Os! I had experience with Mint for my Self hosting rig and wanted to see other pastures. Decided to rearrange my three drives, two of them are still Windows, another I emptied and dedicated to Pop OS. That way I still have easy fallback to Windows if I need to do something fast and then I’ll know...

HughJanus ,

Linux has come a long way but still not flawless for gaming. That’s why I keep a separate partition. Storage is cheap.

HughJanus ,

It’s different in the ways that matter.

Call it the MAPA

Make America Powerful Again

HughJanus ,

That sounds nice but, much like the name for these bills, it’s not reality.

HughJanus ,

The media is full of all types of “news” but people don’t seek out and objectively analyze truth, they seek “news” and “science” that fits their preconceived notions and parade it around as truth.

HughJanus ,

when is the right time to plunk down tens of thousands of dollars??

Yesterday

HughJanus ,

How much energy is released is not as important as the ratio of how much it takes to lift vs. lower (AKA “efficiency”)

HughJanus ,

if you want to get in on all renewable power source, maybe it’s you who should adjust power consumption a little bit instead?

What makes you think they haven’t already?

HughJanus ,

I think you’re lost

Meta sparks privacy fears after unveiling $299 Smart Glasses with hidden cameras: ‘You can now film everyone without them knowing’ (nypost.com)

Meta sparks privacy fears after unveiling $299 Smart Glasses with hidden cameras: ‘You can now film everyone without them knowing’::These stylish shades may look like a regular pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, but they’re actually Meta’s new Smart Glasses, complete with two tiny cameras and speakers implanted in the arms. The...

Boiled the frog too quickly

HughJanus ,

In the US, it’s been long held people do not have the “expectation of privacy” while out in public.

At the time it made sense. But laws need to change with the times. In the future you’ll have people wearing these shitty glasses with cameras all around you all day every day cataloging your movements and entering them into giant corporate data centers. Something needs to change.

HughJanus ,

Those cameras only record locally.

These glasses presumably upload every frame to corporate data centers to be cataloged and used to profile the people in the images.

HughJanus ,

Meta did it last time also.

HughJanus ,

What backlash has ever prevented Meta from doing absolutely whatever the fuck they want?

HughJanus ,

Not necessarily. I can control my devices and prevent them from spying on me.

I can install Linux on my PC and Graphene on my phone and refuse to use Google, Apple, and Meta products and services. I can choose to use local home automation products and cameras.

What I can’t do is stop other people from recording me throughout my daily life and reporting my activities back to said corporations.

Tesla trial over Autopilot fatality kicks off in California (www.reuters.com)

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Opening statements are set to begin on Thursday in the first U.S. trial over allegations that Tesla’s (TSLA.O) Autopilot driver assistant feature led to a death, and its results could help shape similar cases across the country....

HughJanus ,

Anybody who crashes while using Autopilot is their own damn fault, and this is what the court will find.

Autopilot is nothing more than an advanced driver assistance system. Every other manufacturer has a similar system but Tesla is the only one being used and plastered all over the news.

HughJanus ,

They didn’t change anything. They’re separate products.

HughJanus ,

Except “full self driving” is not in question. It’s autopilot.

HughJanus ,

🤦‍♂️ you’re the one who needs to read the article. There’s nothing there to indicate it was in use at the time.

HughJanus ,

Of course it matters. The plaintiff not knowing how to use their car is not a valid defense.

HughJanus ,

I clicked the first one and the Pi5 is listed for >$2k and out of stock. Can you be more specific?

HughJanus ,

I didn’t act like you owe me anything. Someone asked you for a link to where they can order them and that is not what you posted. It was not helpful.

HughJanus ,

I am not a programmer by any means but I know enough to know they did their research.

Except Tyrell called it “nome” instead of “g’nome” and I’m pretty sure TOR exit nodes can only see unencrypted data and the entry node can only see who sent it.

HughJanus ,

is gnome meant to be read as ‘genome’?

If we’re being pedantic, yes 🙂

HughJanus ,

The entire FAQ doesn’t spend a syllable saying what it is for, except that its like Terraform.

It seems to be some sort of trend to absolutely never explain what your product is or how it works. Especially not on the main page. It’s just “click here to sign up now”!

HughJanus ,

It’s hard, man. You got people that don’t care but then you got a whole other group of people who actively defend corporate shitfuckery, while being screwed.

HughJanus ,

Well that’s nice but the vast majority of stuff he does is small-scale and there’s very little in the way of installation instruction. Mostly just product reviews.

HughJanus ,

The case centers around Samantha Liapes, a 48-year-old woman who turned to Facebook to find an insurance provider.

I’m sorry, whatnow?

So now if I search for car insurance and Facebook shows me ads for a buttplug from Kickstarter, I can sue them? Because we’re all going to very rich, if so.

HughJanus ,

Collusion*

HughJanus ,

…but it’s not. And I really think people either don’t understand that or they are intentionally misrepresenting the situation.

Being level-headed and fact-driven isn’t “corporate apologist”, it’s how you maintain integrity and don’t derail your own movement by being dishonest about shit that doesn’t even matter.

It’s like when Trump lies about his golf games. No one cares about his golf games but it makes you realize that if he’s willing to blatantly and badly lie about something so trivial, he’s probably also lying about absolutely everything else about him that might even remotely appear negative.

HughJanus ,

I mean that’s not even a little correct.

Streaming allows you to watch videos on demand, and allows you to choose from a littany of providers, where you were previously limited to whoever laid cable in your neighborhood.

HughJanus ,

Bazzite is Fedora, if I’m not mistaken

Running AI is so expensive that Amazon will probably charge you to use Alexa in future, says outgoing exec (www.businessinsider.com)

Running AI is so expensive that Amazon will probably charge you to use Alexa in future, says outgoing exec::In an interview with Bloomberg, Dave Limp said that he “absolutely” believes that Amazon will soon start charging a subscription fee for Alexa

HughJanus ,

You wouldn’t need any kind of special training for this. Just the ability to do simple things like make calendar appointments, draft emails/responses, and set reminders based on time/locations/etc. It really doesn’t seem very complicated but as far as I know no one has figured out how to do it yet. All the existing “assistants” are so bad that I don’t even bother trying to use them anymore. They can’t even do something simple like turning on a light with any degree of reliability.
