You can also install wallpaper plugins from the KDE store for your lock screen background. I’m a fan of City Grow.

Remote desktop for Wayland?

I only just switched to Linux last month that time I don’t know what Wayland or X11 is and I just use Linux like normal without knowing I’m using Wayland (KDE), now since I’m already configured my KDE desktop on Wayland and I don’t wanna do it again, so I’m looking for a remote desktop that work under Wayland not...

Sunshine/Moonlight works well for me also.

Any suggestions for cheap but decent laptops for coding?

I’m currently learning how to code (currently Python, then maybe JavaScript), but I’m not always around my desktop, and learning on my phone is not always an option (also, it can be quite cumbersome at times). Therefore, I’m looking into purchasing a laptop just for learning how to code and stuff....

I have an 8 year old Acer aspire and it works great for coding. I’ve learned a lot about both of those languages with zero worries and recently moved the OS over to nix with excellent results.

Well, I’ve got good news, you can do both at the same time with the patented cyber-bullet! When it implants, it implants 100 percent of the time.

I run a SearXNG instance myself and while it is a fine aggregator, it’s important to note what it is and isn’t. For instance, Sear does not have a dedicated search index and leans on third party API calls (to indexes such as the aforementioned Google and DDG listings.) This is my understanding, feel free to correct it.

For my money, I like the anonymity that Sear can afford and that it hides the AI bullshit pouring into the UIs. My son and I were talking over the weekend about how unreliable he is finding the move to AI search.

Edit: A list of public SearXNG instances for anyone that doesn’t want to spin up their own.

I use kde connect and/or sunshine myself.

Unfortunately, no, I assign one monitor that stays asleep unless I intentionally wake it. Most of my use case these days is streaming my desktop remotely over wireguard. Good luck tinkering!

I also care that whatever company I work for moves to take corrective action as well. This isn’t at all difficult to think through.

Consideration is required; it’s much easier to be a knee-jerk contrarian one supposes.

Really Impressed

I was always on Linux since Varsity but two years ago when I bought a gaming Laptop, it had Windows 11 on and worked great. I thought I would give it a chance and it was great especially for gaming. Luckily a lot of the open source software I was used to were available on windows. I also liked some of the Linux tools like the...

Welcome back.

This weekend I finally joined the club of folks that install Mint on their parent’s aging laptops. I’m a Nix/Arch user btw and am very impressed with the ease of use and flexibility that Mint brings to the table.

Hominine ,
@Hominine@lemmy.world avatar

Are you running Cinnamon? I was impressed with the customization options out of the box and had to stop playing with it as I wanted to keep things fairly plain. Looking forward to later dropping it on a burner laptop for my own twiddling.

Yay, more live-service microtransaction bullshit to avoid.

As a linux user, do you know about/use openwrt?

I have many nerdy friends who have been Linux users for ages. But most of them don’t know such a thing as Openwrt exists or have never bothered to give it a try. It’s a very fun piece of software to play with and can be extremely useful for routing traffic. Wondering why it isn’t more popular/widely used.

Hominine ,
@Hominine@lemmy.world avatar

As a seven-plus year Linux vet I’ve known about OpenWRT for some time but only made the switch about 3 months or so myself to breathe some life into an aging Linksys.

I’m very impressed with the kit so far, it runs well (snappy even) and the amount of options provided are a bit overwhelming at first. Eventually I’ll move on to prosumer hardware, but this is a nice middle ground in the interim.

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

Strava has continued to enshittify the app to the point that I’m getting ads after every activity. Anyway, I decided to delete it after yesterday’s run and will keep an eye on this project. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation, looking into it as well.

Should I learn Docker or Podman?

Hi, I’ve been thinking for a few days whether I should learn Docker or Podman. I know that Podman is more FOSS and I like it more in theory, but maybe it’s better to start with docker, for which there is a lot more tutorials. On the other hand, maybe it’s better to straight up learn podman when I don’t know any of the...

I also like to keep a text editor open and paste everything I’m doing, as I do it, into that window. Clean it up a little, and you’ve got documentation for when you eventually have to change/fix it.

Smart stuff that is leaving me feeling dumb for not having thought of it myself, shell history is a poor substitute.

NixOS for gamedev

Hiya! I’m following a gamedev degree in university. It’s been a major challenge doing it from Linux, as everything is Windows stuff (.sln Visual Studio projects, DirectX API, excel graphs…). However I’ve gotten by by making my own tools and dipping into WINE when it gets too difficult. I’m replacing my laptop due to...

Following with interest (as I am a newbie myself), but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t want to re-invent the wheel in the middle of classes. That said, I am loving the process of jumping in feet first on laptop hardware, but the slog is real.

In other news, Arch continues to be rock-solid, even during the Plasma 6 update cycle I’ve had nothing but success where it is concerned. Best of luck!

KDE Plasma 6.0, and KDE Gear 24.02 released (kde.org)

Today the KDE Community is announcing a new najor release of Plasma 6.0, and Gear 24.02. KDE Plasma is a modern, feature-rich desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems. Known for its sleek design, customizable interface, and extensive set of applications, it is also open source, devoid of ads, and makes protecting...

I still have major problems with presence detection and notifications (in Webcord. Love it on Deck tho.) Could be me. Vencord is a project I just stumbled on and it seems really solid in just about every area. Check out those plugins.

Shell Commands are the primary tool I use to go about doing these things. I write the scripts to perform the action(s) desired and drop them on the local PC. The shell commands are then fired off from Home Assistant via SSH (either directly in the HA dashboard a la human interaction or through automations) or via my phone through Tasker or KDE Connect (as mentioned elsewhere.)

The trickiest bit for me was setting the correct environmental variables in the scripts but then it was an excellent learning opportunity! Best of luck OP and let me know if I can provide any more info.

While we are here, does anyone know of an open source implementation of a recommendation algorithm? I currently pay for YTM for my family and while it is the Bee’s Knees now, I can see the coming enshittification and would like to start planning ahead. Thanks!

Crickets

Small wonder. A tangent, but I’m also of the opinion that someone shouldn’t put their child’s photo (or any information) on the internet if they don’t want to distribute it in the first place.

Skip the bullshit and go straight to Arch. archinstall for a good time.

Hominine ,
@Hominine@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve not had problems but nothing is fool-proof and I have proved myself a fool in the past.

In all seriousness I followed the Manjaro - Endeavour - Arch pipeline and don’t see much value in the other flavors outside of a little handholding that can introduce problems of its own.

Went to buy my son and I copies (we’ve been waiting for this release) and was gob-smacked to see this. After reading about the monetization we’re out.

There are too many quality indie titles to play in lieu of having to bend the knee in this way.

Wot The Fsck You Say, Spotify? (lemmy.world)

Edit: A couple times I’ve said eBook while I actually meant Audiobook. I’ve learned that Spotify has a 15 hour limit per month for their free ‘included in premium’ audiobooks. Haven’t looked at the audiobook player scene on Android since stumbling over Smart Audiobook Player some years ago. I bought the full edition after enjoying it. It has a scraper for images and works well with titles downloaded from audiobookbay.

Hominine ,
@Hominine@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely. I don’t think Steam is exactly malicious (particularly when compared with publicly traded corporations,) but that said the framework is firmly in place to screw over the vast majority of non-console gamers with a snap of the fingers or a meeting of the board.

The community is slow walking into horse armor (or paid mods if one prefers,) again.
