Some times it’s difficult to tell if a person like that is serious or just seriously trolling you. However, I have met people who say some of the wildest things about wikipedia, vaccines, police, governments etc. and they seemed very serious to me.

Three are also tests where you are expected to think like the person who made the test to figure or what the “correct” answer us. It’s not really correct, but it is the one that gets you the points.

Also some IQ question have several correct answers, but only one of them gives you the points. Super annoying. If you’re creative and smart enough to come up with a logically consistent answer you’re still not guaranteed to get the “correct” answer.

My ISP, phone company, bank, insurance company and everyone else send me TOS related messages from time to time. Usually, the message is something along the lines of: “We’re altering the deal. Pray we don’t alter it any further”

It doesn’t seem fair to me, but since everyone is doing it, there probably isn’t a law against it.

A human would think before responding, and while thinking about these things, you may decide to cheat or lie.

GPT doesn’t think at all. It just generates a response and calls it a day. If there was another GPT that took these “initial thoughts” and then filtered them out to produce the final answer, then we could talk about cheating.

As a seasoned distrohopper, can confirm. When I try something new, I always ask myself: Would a noob be ok with the fact that in this distro you have to do things this way. In Fedora, Debian, Manjaro and so many other I always end up saying “no” more than a few times. With Mint, you just don’t bump into these situations very often. IMO, Mint is the best starter distro for most users. If you know your friend is very technical, you can recommend something else.

Using a degoogled LineageOS was great. It’s just that the world around it has changed so much that doing certain things wasn’t really viable any more. Having a phone like that in 2010 would have been awesome, but nowadays it’s really inconvenient. Nowadays, there are some highly unfortunate software needs that don’t quite fit with this philosophy any more.

I didn’t come up with the idea that my bank requires an app, and that the app absolutely requires an OEM phone with a normal Android and GAPPS. They started requiring that nonsense, which put me in a tight spot. Do I decide to live without money or will I switch to an inferior OS.

There are also some nice to have apps that came up with similar stupid decisions. Living without them means living in the past, and I would be ok with that too. Getting a minor inconvenience in return of having more privacy is ok with me. Suffering significant inconveniences is not OK. I had to draw the line somewhere, which unfortunately meant switching away from LineageOS.

I went with iOS, because IMO it’s the least bad option out there. I made some horrible compromises, but at least I can live in 2023 like everyone else. I’m not at all happy with this decision, but at least iOS isn’t half as infuriating as it used to be 10 years ago.

LOS is good for a lot of things, so keep on using it until you run into a brick wall like I did. Hopefully, someone has already figured out a solution by then or maybe you can just choose to use a different app instead.

Just checked my toothpaste, and it contains SLS. Maybe the EU has tighter limits than the FDA when it comes to using SLS in a toothpaste.

There’s one thing everyone should know about toxicology: you can use just about anything safely as long as the concentration is low enough. It’s very rare to find a compound where even a single molecule can be considered harmful. There are lots of compounds where the safe limits is ridiculously low, so using them safely is about the same as avoiding them all together. However, there are also lots of compounds where we routinely dance the line of harm and benefit. For example, many medications fall into this category. Technically, vitamins are in that category too, but most people never come close to eating too much of a specific vitamin.

Sure, it is already changing some fields, and more and more fields are beginning to feel the impact in the coming decades. However, we’re still pretty far from a true GPAI, so letting the AI do all the work isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Garbage in, garbage out still applies here. If we don’t collect data in the appropriate way, you can’t expect to teach a model with that. Once we start collecting data with ML in mind, that’s when things start changing quickly. Currently, we have lots and lots of garbage data about everything, and that’s why we aren’t using AI to more.

Sounds like people here are expecting to see GPAI and singularity stuff, but all they see is a pitiful LLM or other even more narrow AI applications. Remember, even optical character recognition (OCR) used to be called AI until it became so common that it wasn’t exciting any more. What AI developers call AI today, is just basic automation and few decades later.

Most likely, the incremental and practical improvements have also been documented in special magazines and journals written for battery experts. It’s just that those articles tend to stay in the bubble of the battery experts.

I think I see a theme here. Doing fun normie stuff on iOS/ipadOS is easy. Doing technical stuff is usually completely impossible.

Doing technical stuff on Linux is easy as long as you know what you’re doing. Doing popular normie things on Linux is a bit hit-or-miss. Some things work perfectly, but other things are a royal pita.

Windows seems to be in between the two extremes in more than one regard. Microsoft seems to be working to find some sort of compromise in these things.

Until I checked, I was so sure that was a great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major). Once you know what to look for, you can easily tell them which one is which. They’re not even in the same genus, but they look deceptively similar anyway.

Maybe you’re not supposed to do any pro stuff with it. Just watch youtube videos and browse FB or whatever it is that grandmas do these days. Many apple products don’t really feel as pro as you’re lead to believe by the marketing team.

Just today I ran into a strange issue with the iMovie on iOS. You literally can’t edit a vertical video in any sensible way. Either you shoot horizontal video or you don’t shoot at all. These are the only options Apple gives for you.

I don’t think I had any initial beliefs that I could have reinforced by paying attention to certain kinds of posts and people. It feels like I tend to notice the stuff I’m not into. That’s the bias I’m interested in.

However, after making that first observation, confirmation bias can certainly take it from there and inflate the number of LGBT+ people in my head.

When saving a file in Word, Excel or whatever, the process looks some thing like this.

“Save this file” dialogue appears, and it expects I want to dump everything into the root of OneDrive. Well, I don’t.

“Choose location” has some folders, none of which are what I want, because I tend to save my files pretty deep in the tree. Everything has a logical place, you know. I’m not one of those people who have a thousand files and 500 GB on the desktop. I like it neat and tidy.

Click “more options”. Now I can finally navigate to the specific folder I want. If you realize you actually need to create a new folder, this dialogue box isn’t for you. In order to do that, you need to go to “browse” where you’ll get the normal file dialogue box.

Can’t I just jump straight to the browse menu when I press ctrl+s? You know, like the way normal applications do it. Just try to save a file with Inkscape to see what I mean.

My first draft included something thoroughly NSFL, but then I decided to use the lite version of the test instead.

Teasing GPT to use certain forbidden words could be a fun way to test it. GPT would refuse to write about it, whereas most humans would tell you exactly the kind of person you are, and they would not hold back on using colorful language either. However, the same test is also able to detect a certain type of person who happens to be into said immoral thinking. They would be happy to write a few pages for you, and they would explain everything in great detail.

So many videos don’t even use the picture for anything useful. You can go for a walk and just listen to the audio part instead, and you won’t miss anything essential. Just leave the phone in your pocket while you walk to the train station or something. It’s really surprising how many videos work perfect well as background content like that.

If you’re working in a microbiology lab, you’ll regularly use an autoclave and ethanol to kill microbes. Occasionally, you’ll even need to dispose of old cultivations by autoclaving them. That could be something like 10^7 cfu/ml*1000 ml = 10^10 living cells brutally roasted to death.

I really hope this the end of an era of milking the users for data and then selling that for ad money. Twitter and Facebook are switching to a subscription model, but I’m not so sure it’s actually going to reduce the amount of data they try to get from everyone.
