Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s who. I could write just about anything here, and it wouldn’t make a difference. As a matter of fact, I’m kinda curious to find out how much text can you dump in here. If you’re like really verbose, you could go on and on about any pointless…[no more than this]

Or as I do:

  1. Watch videos of Cyberpunk
  2. Think of buying it
  3. Realize I still haven’t finished Mass Effect
  4. Never actually buy Cyberpunk.

Currently I’m thinking of Baldur’s gate 3, but you know… I’ll probably get around to it in a few years.

I thought this is the way it’s been since 2008.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

The key is to occupy your mind with thoughts that are very neutral in emotional content. If you notice you’re thinking of stuff that makes you anxious, scared, worried, excited etc. you need to switch to a different mental channel.

I prefer to watch the channel where I’m directing a fantasy/scifi story. It can involve wild stuff like sword fights with dragons but it has to be emotionally flat. It’s not uncommon for me to continue the story for several weeks until I switch to a different one.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Then make a completely new channel where you craft exactly the kind of content you want. You can try directing a series about the life of a basket weaver or a fisherman. How about mountain climbing or diving if you want something more interesting. Come up with all the dialogue, plot points and other events and play it out. Make it a full VR experience while you’re at it. If you want space magic and laser samurai, go ahead and make the the story as wild as you want.

Just try to avoid all the emotional stuff like an evil villain doing something unspeakable which makes you hate the character. Emotions like that are guaranteed to keep you awake.

If you notice emotions creeping in regardless, rewind the story back a few minutes and rewrite the emotional bits. You’re the director. You’re in full control.

Here’s a map of the global freedom status, and Russia seems to be in the same group with most of Africa Middle East and Asia. Considering this context, the news article doesn’t seem surprising at all. Just another sad day in Russia.

Yeah, well it might not be the best source, but at least they have a map that measures something interesting. The second best option would have been the map of press freedom index. It’s not quite the same things and it isn’t entirely relevant to the conversation either, but there you go. At least it tells you something about the attitude different countries have towards the media, which may or may not be associated with the attitude towards activists. This map also paints a slightly more nuanced picture, but the conclusion is largely the same as before.

Exclusive: US to send depleted-uranium munitions to Ukraine (www.reuters.com)

The use of depleted uranium munitions has been fiercely debated, with opponents like the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons saying there are dangerous health risks from ingesting or inhaling depleted uranium dust, including cancers and birth defects.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Uranium is pretty toxic compared to lead. LD50 is roughly 114 mg/kg vs. 4665 mg/kg depending on source. If you happen to get that dust inside your body, the radiation isn’t going to help you stay healthy either.

Currently I’m in the process of figuring out if I actually need extra vitamins. I’m using a food tracking app that also includes vitamins and minerals, not just fats and carbs like most apps do. It’s a lot of work, but I’m not planning to do this forever.

So far, I’ve found out that vitamin A and D might come in handy, but everything else seems fine.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Just took a look at my 7 day average, and it seems that potassium isn’t really a problem in my case. I’m getting plenty from mushrooms, barley, prunes and peanuts.

I also looked up what I would need to eat in order to get the missing vitamins. The answer is carrots for A and some margarine for D.

Why are YouTube comments so much different than any other comments made online

YouTube comment sections are weirdly positive always. It could be a video of some horrible crime and the comments will be about how great the channel is and encouraging the channel to keep making more videos. When j visit actual fan pages anywhere else online there are always a mix of opinions. But youtube is constantly full of...

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I can still remember a time when I would never read any comments at all. It was usually about furious debates, name calling, hate speech etc. You know, pretty much exactly what Twitter is known for.

X, formerly Twitter, faces 2,200 arbitration cases and filing fees over $3 million (www.nbcnews.com)

X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, is facing 2,200 arbitration cases that ex-employees filed after Elon Musk took over the company, slashed headcount, and made other sweeping changes there. The filing fees alone for that volume of cases could amount to $3.5 million....

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Currently x.com still redirects to Twitter.com, so I don’t see any issues with calling it Twitter.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Elon could make things even worse by hastening that transition. If the x-twitter app is down for a few weeks and all external connections break for a few month, it’s going to be just fine. I’m pretty sure that it would only improve the quality of life of all twitter users.

Can we also add some mercury, arsenic or plutonium to provide some extra medical benefits.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

You can interpret it that way, if you want. However, that wasn’t really what I had in mind. Just pointing out that Americans seem to love acronyms so much that it gets completely ridiculous at times. In highly technical contexts it makes sense when you’re writing documentation or articles for a very small audience.

For instance, you can shorten Green House Gasses to GHGs if you’re audience consists of climate scientists, but don’t expect the general public to know that acronym. Go ahead and shorten Volatile Organic Compounds to VOCs if you’re writing to chemists. You can talk about CMB when talking to geologists and FFPs when talking to cosmologists, but people outside those fiels probably have never heard of these things let alone the acronyms.

In normal every day situations it just doesn’t make sense, because you can’t realistically expect everyone to know all of these thousands of accornyms for thousands of more or less common items, situations and things in life.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Generally speaking, it’s a good practice to do it exactly the way you just did. It’s just that certain acronyms have already been taken. Well, technically all of them have already been taken, but some are obscure while others are familiar to the general public.

If your new acronym collides with something obscure like CMB, then who cares (apart from geologists). If you end up using somethign more familiar ones such as USB, BMW or HTC, you’re going to run into some issues. However, it migh be fun to write an article and really mess with the reader by forcing as many acronym collisions as possible.

Ok, but why? What’s wrong with Firefox and how do the forks address those points?

Lemmy probably feels like Reddit when it first started, all warm cuddly and friendly to newcomers eager to discuss and collaborate around central topics.

I joined reddit on the tailwind, so it was all echo chamber, we hate newcomers, gatekeeping, automod frenzy, too many rulebreakers, too many rules, etc I could be wrong, but thats what I imagine it used to be like.

The only solution is to make your own private instance and never allow anyone to join. Perfection at last… Oh, wait there’s still one human ruining the atmosphere. Not to worry, there’s a quick fix for that. You just need to ban yourself and then the instance will be completely perfect forever.

Me too. Besides, I have just enough space for my AeroPress. Gettin a machine of any type would make it difficult for me to do other things in my small kitchen.

Besides, I’m not entirely sure I would appreciate the flavors I can get out of coffee using an espresso machine. I’ve tried a bunch of different drinks at several cafes and I just don’t see the value in owning a machine like that. AP coffee is just fine or even really good as long as you use the right type of beans.

Hamartiogonic ,

Have you reached the gaiwan stage already?

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

That is the next level in this hobby.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Before diving into this hobby I was worried that I might not be able to tolerate the type of coffee that happens to be available to me at some random gas station or cafe along the way. That hasn’t been a problem for me yet, but how about you?

Having spent some time experimenting with my AeroPress, I have learned to notice some basic flavors and notes, but I wouldn’t call myself a experienced coffee taster yet. I can tell the difference between light and dark roast. Trying to tell the difference between two expensive coffees is usually very difficult for me, so I guess gettin an espresso machine might not be worth it yet.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Oh, so that’s why I can’t seem to find any cafe making good light roast. Every place seems to love dark roast, super dark roast, ultra-mega-hyper-dark-still-smoking-black-hole-shade roast.

About a month a go I went to my local cafe and asked if they’re selling coffee beans. They had some options, so I bought a bag of their lightest. Back home I tried it out and it tasted rather dark to me. I compared it with a cheap store brand that is labeled as roast level 1, and the taste difference was significant. Their lightest is probably like level 3 or 4, which is nowhere near what I’m looking for.

If you’re autistic, the outside world is horrifying to you and technology is the only thing you care about, so that’s what you’ll eat, drink and breathe all the time. It’s not really about the energy, it’s about the environment and your ability or inability to tolerate certain aspects of it.

What if the quantum uncertainty suddenly became significantly larger on macroscopic scales?

Let’s say the quantum uncertainty which is currently quite small and doesn’t affect our life on macroscopic scale suddenly increased. Magically we are still living in this weird rule of physics. How would we see daily stuff? like how would I see a ball rolling in my sight?

So basically, we would just skip straight to the heat death of the universe, right?

How do people find good information on the internet these days?

It used to be that you would do a search on a relevant subject and get blog posts, forums posts, and maybe a couple of relevant companies offering the product or service. (And if you wanted more information on said company you could give them a call and actually talk to a real person about said service) You could even trust...

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

You’re asking about a pretty tough problem, and I don’t have the silver bullet for that one. However, I do have some tools that might help you out a bit. None of these tools are 100% reliable, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Fakespot and reviewmeta can help weeding out some of the junk reviews.

When I have a lot of text to go through, I just dump all of it on chatGPT or Bing and ask for a summary. It’s a language model after all, so it should be pretty good at this sort of thing. A horse won’t plow a field all by itself, but if you’re there to steer it, it will get the job done faster than you would.

When I’m looking for a good book to read, I’ll usually use the reviews of goodreads. Just skip all the 5-star reviews, because they are usually written by people who aren’t competent at reviewing books. Take all the the 1-4 star reviews dump them on your favorite LLM and let it look for frequently reoccurring complaints.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

And that’s why you shouldn’t buy those things new. If you really really want one, get a used one. Sure, it’s a few years old, but it’s fine as long as it’s still updated. Besides, you’re paying only a fraction of what it was when it was released.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Decaying battery is a serious issue in the long run. As long as you’re not buying a 5 year old phone, you should be fine. Get something that’s about 1-4 years old instead and check the battery health before the purchase.

If you need a battery replacement, that means that the previous owner abused the battery with suboptimal charging style or maybe the phone is old enough that you won’t be getting updates any more. In the latter case, it’s just pure planned obsolescence.

As for the article, slowing down the phone without the users consent was a bad move IMO. This shows how little Apple respects the user. Then again, tech companies tend to treat us like trash, so that’s nothing new.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

TL;DR bot seems to on summer vacation now, so I had to ask Bing to summarize the article for me. Here’s what It says:

“According to an article on Tech Xplore, the European Union has introduced a new set of digital regulations called the Digital Services Act. The act aims to protect European users’ privacy, transparency, and removal of harmful or illegal content. The act will affect big tech companies such as Google, Facebook, TikTok, and Amazon. The act will allow users to turn off AI-recommended videos and personalized search results. Users can choose to view content only from people they follow. Search results will be based only on the words they type. Users should find it easier to report a post, video or comment that breaks the law or violates a platform’s rules so that it can be reviewed and taken down if required. Affected service providers will have until 1 January 2024 to comply with its provisions.”

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Especially in search results this is going to be huge. The home page on YT can be useful if you’re mindful of your clicks and steer the recommendation algorithm in a very specific direction. So there are pros and cons to this algorithm thing, so you might not want to disable it everywhere.

A few years ago I noticed that the videos on the right hand side were no longer relevant to what I was watching at the time. I found that change really annoying, so going back to the old days would be refreshing.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’ve been tracking my time with Toggl, so I can answer that with surprising amount of detail and confidence.

I took my time data from 2022, and made a bunch of calculations with it. The results are: 3:41-7:52 hours per day. The median and average were both 5:54. Ooh, looks like this data might actually follow the normal distribution after all! Anyway, that range covers 80% of the distribution, so extremely short and long days fall in the 20% that’s outside of that range.

In this calculation I’ve counted as working all the meetings, casual chitchat, normal work, organizing and all the random administration clutter. Commutes, lunches and time wasted in social media time don’t count as work.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Wait what? Are you saying that if you get promoted to a manager, you work less and also get paid less?

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

You have to figure out what’s the minimum amount of work you can still get away with. Then you do that amount + a little bit extra so that you don’t get fired the during the next recession.

Hamartiogonic , (edited )
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Even though our current models can be really complex, they are still very very far away from being the elusive General Purpose AI sci-fi authors have been writing about for decades (if not centuries) already. GPT and others like it are merely Large Language Models, so don’t expect them to handle anything other than language.

Humans think of the world through language, so it’s very easy to be deceived by an LLM to think that you’re actually talking to a GPAI. That misconception is an inherent flaw of the human mind. Language comes so naturally to us, and we’re often use it as a shortcut to assess the intelligence of other people. Generally speaking that works reasonably well, but an LLM is able to exploit that feature of human behavior in order to appear to be smarter than it really is.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I always encourage people to play around with Bing or chatGPT. That way they’ll get a very good idea how and when an LLM fails. Once you have your own experiences, you’ll also have a more realistic and balanced opinions about it.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

What if someone trained an LLM exclusively on racist forum posts. That would be hilarious. Or better yet, another LLM trained with conspiracy BS conversations. Now that one would be spicy.
