SPUNGE. A thirsty fellow, a great drinker. To spunge; to eat and drink at another's cost. Spunging-house: a bailiff's lock-up-house, or repository, to which persons arrested are taken, till they find bail, or have spent all their money:

A selection from Francis Grose’s “Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue” (1785)

@TheVulgarTongue @histodons Spunge, pretty sure Jack Vance used that … or it just sounds like something he would’ve liked. It is a good sounding one.
Spunge .. spunge!

Polygon just posted:

StoryGraph is the Goodreads alternative worth switching to

The book tracking app has better features and no drama

@bookstodon @n0madz @GamingNews they got so many sign up so they had to upgrade the servers to handle the load!

@GamingNews @n0madz @bookstodon They always have a bit of a sign up frenzy on new years as there is some challenges that start then and people got subscriptions as gifts and whatnot.
But it was even more that their projections this year. Next newsletter will be interesting.

Does anyone in the book community use The StoryGraph app? It looks great but I would love to hear the experience of someone who actually uses it before signing up.

@bookstodon @YourNeighbor57 I have been a user since even before it was widely launched and it really fits me as a glove. I adore the simple GUI, no adds and the recommendations algorithm is actually useful.
The statistics are fun and for those who are interested there is community functions building up.

Hey
Any recommendations for books with nonbinary or transmen main characters? Feeling like I could really use the representation, but all I'm finding are transwomen, and that's... not me. As long as it's fiction, any genre is okay.

@bookstodon @CrescentSays The main character in K. B Wagers excellent NeoG series is enby.

@bookstodon @lunacia @thestorygraph Yeah, I side eyeing this feature, but so far there actually have been plenty of books that was interesting news to me.
I left Goodreads when the recommendations stopped being personalized and just become what Amazon wanted to push at me.

@sunflower @bookstodon I would put in three suggestions:

  1. Telepath by Janet Edwards https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/a8ffb5b8-db55-417f-a5e8-470377db83b3

  2. The Green Man's Heir by Juliet E. McKenna https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/35d7dfeb-0bcc-478f-836d-9df8656fd29d

  3. A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/cb306824-d1f1-4d30-af58-5ccd1c13710e

All three are excellent and have way less recognition than they deserve.

(and of course I recommend Murderbot, but so do everyone else)

As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...

This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more or categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.

Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:

Just started Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin. Apparently the later books of the cycle are disliked by fans. I am bewildered by that assessment. I can already tell this is an all-time favorite.

Everything from the prose to the characters feels more mature and meditative. Gender is also examined in a much more holistic and painful way. Several passages have already spoken to my soul in such a deep way that I know will remain with me for a long time

@hawksquill @bookstodon I think they mostly was disliked by the usual "middle-age white male cis crowd" that can't really handle anything than the milquetoast books they have build their reality around.
