Growing up, there was an association in my area for common ownership of different types of machinery and other equipment for its members. You paid something like $10 a year, and for that you got to borrow all kinds of things you might need as a home owner, like a wood chopper/splitter, high pressure washer, trailers, leaf blowers, cement mixer, scaffolding etc.

I always thought that was brilliant.

Even if you assume that additional labour costs are a bit higher in Germany, there’s no way on earth that it could explain the difference of the Bay Area-median being over 3 times higher.

Finally all that power won’t be wasted waiting for a single app download to finish and install.

Wait, what do you mean by this?

GissaMittJobb ,

Sure, but why would this lead to a decrease in power consumption? I’m not sure that follows.

Middling pay? At FAANG-tier companies?

These are some extraordinary claims in need of some extraordinary proof.

Just made for a good border-point, really.

This is all imagined though as I refuse to recognize the sovereignty of Finland and Norway - long live the Great Swedish Empire

GissaMittJobb ,

I’ve used and enjoyed that kind of setup a while back, but my new favourite is to have something that rotates different backgrounds. macOS has their dynamic wallpapers which you can set to cycle through different ones on a regular basis, which I really like. I still don’t like having any icons, though.

On Android, I use Muzei to get a different artwork as my background every day. It’s also very nice.

GissaMittJobb ,

I honestly stopped caring a long time ago. I’ve been using bluetooth headphones exclusively since before the jacks started going away, and I’m just not bothered by it.

It would have been nice for them to stick around, but it’s not really a hill I’m willing to die on.

GissaMittJobb ,

Agreed to the part about job security being terrible in the U.S, but it’s worth mentioning that the premium you get in income for living in for example San Francisco far outweighs the cost of housing.

Is it worth the solar panels I'm getting? (lemmy.world)

I’m sorry for posting this here. There isn’t a solar panel instance, nor did I see anything for electricians. I know there’s been a lot of gripe with certain solar companies (solgen being in litigation, and others) but I didn’t hear much about freedom forever, since they’re new to Seattle area where I’m doing this....

GissaMittJobb ,

Straya is living in the year 3024 with regards to solar. We’re all very jealous of your success in this particular endeavor.

GissaMittJobb ,

They’ve got better conditions with regards to the amount of sunlight, yes, but I was mainly referring to the incredible price tag of the installed system.

  • General purpose LLMs are starting to replace everyday queries I used to posit to Google. Perplexity can be quite good for this.
  • Copilot as enhanced autocomplete when writing code. A particularly good use-case is writing tests: with a few test cases already written, a sufficiently good test name will most often generate a well-written test case.
  • LLMs for lazy generation of SQL queries can sometimes be quite nice.
  • Writing assistance for things I find myself struggling to get written by myself. A writing unblocking tool, if you will.

It’s reducing the effort and time I have to put into some things, and I appreciate that. It’s far from perfect, but it doesn’t have to be perfect to be useful.

Realistically I think it’s probably easier to acquire a botnet of less secure systems. This was a targeted attack.

I’ve always been sent a text when I connect to the network of a different country. It happened immediately when I crossed over from France to Monaco, for example.

Idk how much I can trust anything being posted by Reason tbh - it’s not exactly what I would call a respectable publication.

A few things come to mind:

  1. The array is probably fine. It’s not going to be particularly large and lookups are O(1)
  2. It’s a bit weird to me that you’re using the char pointers as indices. I would probably use actual indices and spend the miniscule amount of additional stack data to improve the clarity of the code
  3. You could save on some indentation by returning early instead of nesting the for-loop inside the first if-statement
  4. Is the call to the lookup-table really safe? Maybe checking that the token from RNA is within the bounds is the way to go?
  5. The only thing I would even remotely care about with regards to performance is the malloc, and that’s not that big of a deal anyway unless the length of dna is really large. Streaming the result or overwriting the presumably already malloc’d input would be the only thing I would touch, and only if I could prove that it improves performance in practice.
  6. (added in edit): if you can guarantee that the input is well formed, you can omit the bounds check and save some effort there.
GissaMittJobb ,

A switch statement is probably a decent option here, yeah. You trade off a little bit of memory for what might be a few more instructions executing the switch statement, unless the compiler picks up on it and optimizes it. Maybe check godbolt for what gets generated in practice if you really care about it.

Bone conduction headphones?

I just recently learned that this is a thing that exists. I’ve had a couple audiology tests that use these weird headphones with firm rubber balls where normally expect to see the speakers; the rubber balls sit on your temporal bone, and there’s a metal bar the wraps around your head connecting them and giving them pressure...

GissaMittJobb ,

Which brand/model are you using?

Aftershokz Aeropex

How’s the sound quality?

Not great, but they are not headphones I use for audiophile-purposes

How’s the sound leak?

No idea tbh - a bit more than in-ears/over-ears I guess?

What kind of music do you use it to listen to?

Hardly any. If I want music, I have other hardware for that. My primary use for these headphones is to listen to podcasts while exercising

Are they comfortable to wear? For how long?

You don’t really notice them. I use them for hours on end for long cycling trips and they work well for that

Do you get any skin irritation or even breakdown where it contacts your temple?

I have not noticed any

Does the hook part wrap around your ears without any pressure points?

Yes

Does the behind-the-head band bounce around when you’re walking or running?

Not noticably

How much space is between the band and the back of your head/neck?

A few centimeters, less than five.

How’s the battery life?

A full charge maybe gets you 8 hours I think? I never let my devices go that low, though

How long have you had it?

2 years

When do you use it?

While exercising to listen to podcasts

Do they stay put, or do you need to reposition them frequently?

They stay where they are. It can be annoying to put on/take off shirts though as they can easily get stuck in them

Anything else to comment on?

I really enjoy my headphones, but they are most certainly not good for music imo. Still, it makes my rotation, which is mostly these plus a pair of buds that go in my pocket for all other listening purposes

It’s because they base their reality on crap TV like Blue Bloods.

You squash so all your gross “isort” “forgot to commit this file” “WIP but I’m getting lunch” commits can be cleaned up

The next step on the Git-journey is to use interactive rebasing in order to never push these commits in the first place and maintain a clean history to be consumed by the code reviewer.

Squashing is still nice in order to have a one-to-one relationship between commits on the main branch to pull requests merged, imo.

Not to say that it’s a sufficient penalty for the C-suite, but their compensation packages generally consist of stock options in the company, meaning that the share price decline following unexpected negative events translate into a large pay cut for them.

For anyone not fluent in Norwegian, the article in question states that “The rumours of Salwan Momika’s death are untrue”.

Hey, I take exception to that. I was in fact thirteen when I discovered them.

I’ve been enjoying Ventusky for planning for rain gear when cycling. It’s been good so far.

GissaMittJobb ,

City, no doubt in my mind.

Being able to walk, bike and take transit instead of having to own a car is important for me. I’m not interested in the additional maintenance involved with owning a house, an apartment suits me a lot better. I also like having good access to plenty of things to do in the form of a great selection of restaurants and being close to international transportation options. Good access to nature without having to drive a car is also important to me.

GissaMittJobb ,

I’ll have to check it out sometime, thanks for the recommendation.

How do we package food products sustainably in coming decades?

I imagine all plastics will be out of the question. I’m wondering about what ways food packaging might become regulated to upcycling in the domestic or even commercial space. Assuming energy remains a $ scarce $ commodity I don’t imagine recycling glass will be super practical as a replacement. Do we move to more unpackaged...

GissaMittJobb ,

That statement is naturally only true if you don’t think about it too much -

  • Landfills emit methane which is far worse than simple CO2
  • The use of compost replaces other sources of carbon which may be coming from fossil sources
GissaMittJobb ,

Composting releases the same methane that landfills do.

I don’t think this is correct - methane is produced in anaerobic decomposition, while aerobic decomposition will release CO2.

I’ve got nothing against composting in general, but it should not be thought of as either a carbon neutral process or as a solution to trash. It is a solution only to biomass that cannot be readily sequestered from the biosphere.

I’d agree that it’s a harm reduction strategy, but food production will always have some amount of biomass involved that needs to be taken care of - composting is a beneficial strategy for making good use of this biomass.

GissaMittJobb ,

I feel like people are starting themselves blind on per-stream revenue in a bad way - no one is actually paying per stream. Not the customers, not the streaming companies, not the labels. This is the deal when it comes to streaming platforms - you get to listen to as much as you want for a fixed amount of money per month.

It’s a little bit like saying someone who bought a CD in the 90s for $10 and listened to every song 100 times is a 10 times worse customer than someone who bought the same CD and listened to every song just 10 times. Yes, the person who listened to the CD 100 times paid 10 times less on a per-song listen basis, but that’s quite simply not relevant.

GissaMittJobb ,

What change is this in reference to? I’m not familiar with it.

I think it’s probably good to leave misguided ideas about masculinity out of it - although I’m sure you weren’t being serious, of course.

That being said, speciality coffee brewed with care can often be quite enjoyable to drink black and I agree that it’s worth trying out for OP.
