How much cable did previous generations watch? 2 hours in an evening seems reasonable, maybe even low for some people

FireRetardant ,

Minimum parking standards desroyed density in downtown cores and were basically based off of no real numbers or data. The subsidizing of private vehicle ownership fueled the destruction.

Ive banned the big nsfw instances and banned individual nsfw communties as i see them while browsing all, yet every few days some furry/yiff/obscure hentai always finds its way to my feed.

What if it wasnt actually the final boss? Or you used all your items in the first of 5 stages?

Have you considered letting them party and being a cool responsible adult that sticks around to make sure everyone is safe. I had some friends growing up with parents like this. Their theory was the kids are going to party anyway so if you give them a safe space its less likely to go poorly. Anyone who got a little too sick or emotional ended up with an experienced adult to help them recover.

This is the root of the problems with housing. We stopped building cities the way cities were built for thousands of years to try a new method. Even after proving that method costs more, uses more land, and is socially isolating, that method is promoted.

I personally think corporate greed helps keep it this way as this type of development promotes more spending. You have to buy a car, gas, insurance and you have to use it to get anywhere. This lets those “I’m already here so I’ll get this” or “I dont wanna drive again so ill buy more” mindsets flourish. Single family homes often leads to everyone owning a lot of stuff as well, private pool, private lawn equipment, private playground for your kid to play alone.

Developer greed also plays a role as buildings are built to be the most profitable, not the most useful, even most new SFH developments are massive, luxury homes. Developers won’t build smaller, affordable homes because they get less money per square foot of developable land.

    FireRetardant ,

This is a huge problem with suburban devlopments (single family homes, strip malls, box stores). Almost all of them rely on denser parts of the cities to maintain themselves. Unlike the denser parts of cities, the commercial zoning often struggles when the original business leaves, unlike denser areas that are more flexible. Not only do these developments cost more to build and maintain, they often don’t provide for as long and can be costly/resistant to redevelpment due to suburban zoning and NIMBYism.

Unfortunately, the political climate favours corporations over public opinion, so corporations have the real power to change our policies. I doubt they would want anything that helps local busniesses thrive (like density and transit) and reduces our dependancy on products like gasoline, cars, and bulk processed foods. Building in a way that the only convenient option is to drive to whatever strip mall is close to you ensures that the corporations in the strip malls and big auto/oil still get your money while they are subsidized by cities/governments.

I’d take this bet over building a highway any day.

I’m in North America, and our highways are hell from about 7am to 7pm every day.

Why do some independent creators/small projects still have crypto donation links?

Waaay early on when cryptocurrencies were regarded as being possible alternative currencies it may have made sense, but now as they appear to have become more like extremely questionable investment products/securities, I’m left confused why anyone still has donation links for them alongside alternatives that provide, y’know,...

    FireRetardant ,

Cryptocurrency now is closer to being a real money alternative than ever before. Many banks are considering creating their own central bank digital currency to rival some of the benefits cryptocurrencies offer.

Anyone who still has an address up keeps it because

    1. It costs nothing to own a crypto wallet/recieve funds
    2. Cryptocurrency has no borders so anyone can donate
    3. Crypto currently counts as an asset and often isnt taxed until cashed out into a fiat currency.

Mail stil has to go to a physical address, it’s also not trustless as the mailman could pocket the cash. Monero addresses aren’t tied to a real world location, just whoever knows the key and there is no mailman to trust for delivery.

20-minute brisk walks can dramatically reduce depression risk, research finds. Findings remained consistent even after accounting for factors such as sex, education, age, smoking and alcohol use. (jamanetwork.com)

Key PointsQuestion What is the minimal dose of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) associated with a reduced risk of depression and depressive symptoms in older adults (aged ≥50 years) with and without chronic disease?...

    FireRetardant ,

In my experience as a North American, so many people can’t fathom walking for daily needs like groceries or work because of how hostile our urban environments are. It absolutely sucks walking next to a 5-7 lane road with lots of driveways, intersections and traffic moving 50-80 km/hr. Its loud, smells of exhaust, is often an ugly environment of parking lots, and you gotta be on guard for any cars that don’t see you.

I much prefer taking a more suburban route for groccery trips even though its a little longer and ends up being uphill both ways because the quiet streets and more greenery make a much safer and more enjoyable walk.

    FireRetardant ,

And yet to me, it seems like one of the most common sense why did we even need a study type topic. People really do gotta touch some grass.

    FireRetardant ,

This and the massive distances between most peoples homes and where they need to go. A proper walkable city has most amenities within 20 minutes walking or accessible by transit. It NA urban design, you’re sometimes lucky to have a convenience store within 20 minutes let alone options for work, grocceries, restaurants etc.

My phone does not have a LED notification light. It does however have a little green LED hidden near the front facing camera which is within the screen area. This light comes on only when using the front facing camera and I assume is some kind of indicator light. Why this can’t be dual purpose or why another LED or even small sections of screen can’t be used for notifications is beyond me.

I think the real reason they removed the notification light is to make people use their phones more. Now instead of a glance to see a light I actually have to touch my screen which could allow additional scans of my figerprints or face and could contribute to data tracking when I am most active on my phone.

    FireRetardant ,

    This is the way.

Its not natural to feel “connected” all the time

    FireRetardant ,

I didn’t think of this use case of the light. I honestly just assumed that most cameras would be able to bypass the light and record you anyway because I have very little trust left in big tech companies. Either way with our screen advancements it should be possible to embed a small LED or use a small section of screen for notification lights.
