Doubtful, given that Dendi is Ukrainian…

But now that I think of it, he’s a Russian speaking Ukranian so maybe he WOULD be their first choice…

ECB ,

Interestingly, in europe this seems to vary by country!

I was just thinking that I wasn’t sure which was correct, but it seems both are actually acceptable in Germany although after the number is preferred

ECB ,

It has it’s own challenges, sure… but english isn’t even remotely close to being the hardest language to learn

The spelling is messed up, it has (like virtually every language) a bunch of exceptions to rules, but the grammar has been hugely simplified over the past 1000 years.

Not to mention that the biggest advantage to learning languages is familiarity and the fact that English is, well, everywhere makes it easier.

Sure Esperanto is easier, but for most of the world something like Japanese would be muuuuuch harder

ECB ,

I’m going to guess you mean New Hampshire in the USA?

ECB ,

Good point, it did mention US in the title

ECB ,

I’m in the process of moving away for other reasons, but brexit had nearly no effect on visiting/entering the UK, so no need to worry about that.

They were never in schengen, so there were always border controls. Most of their border controls are automated, so it’s super smooth.

It’s wayyyyy easier than (for instance) entering the US (even as an American!)

The real answer is that there is currently an AI arms race (mostly) between Google and OpenAI.

The way that the modern internet economy works is that the winners generally take the majority of the market and everyone else takes the scraps.

I work in machine learning and have spoken with some of the Google engineers about it recently. They said that when ChatGPT blew up last year, it sent shockwaves through the whole company. They had thought that they were ahead on AI, but suddenly realised that they were WAY behind.

Now they are putting a ton of effort into trying to push new models and uses because they are worried about becoming the “Bing of AI” rather than the “Google of AI”

ECB ,

The best was when you heard how the Professors got their job back in the 70s-80s.

They generally just finished a PhD and were given a position!

ECB ,

Recently got back into Dota 2. It’s still incredibly good!

ECB ,

Depends on the country though as well. Its probably pretty easy to figure out for big ones like the USA, but in smaller countries its often a mess…

ECB ,

I use it to run the Sky App to stream football.

The only options are a windows app or an android app (since you can’t watch in the browser) and I couldn’t get the windows app to work with WINE.

The android app runs fairly well with waydroid, although it occasionally runs into some hiccups.

ECB ,

I loved the books and found the netflix series to be a pretty enjoyable westernization of them.

There were a few changes/choices that were a bit strange or missed the point, but overall it’s worth watching

ECB ,

My most recent issue with Bluez is that it’s been very inconsistent about letting me disable auto-switching to HSP/HFP (headset mode) when joining any sort of call.

It’s working now, but it feels like every few months I need to try a different solution.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don’t do this not because they can’t but because they don’t want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

ECB ,

I think they mean “reign supreme” in the sense that, given the choice, most people these days would choose the bluetooth anyways.

Its just so nice to not have a cord…

ECB ,

When they say something like “60 days battery life” what they mean is using the device for half an hour everyday for 60 days.

OP is arguing that it would make more sense to just say the continuous use battery life, which in the above example would be 30 hours (60 × 0.5)

ECB ,

That’s such a good point. I really appreciated how it wasn’t scared to let viewers figure things out.

ECB ,

That’s true for the US but not everywhere else

ECB ,

Basically just further proof that car traffic doesn’t scale well. It’s just an incredibly space inefficient way to get around.

ECB ,

Small towns built around a train station are absolutely lovely though

ECB ,

Unless you are near a train stop when it skyrockets

ECB ,

Ah, no in europe where I live is fairly normal for rail service to small villages even.

ECB ,

This just seems like more work for him!

ECB ,

Escape Simulator definitely fits the bill.

It’s great, but all about the discovery.

ECB ,

As a fan of both tofu and basically anything fermented…this sounds great!

Are you English speaking by any chance? In Germany I often notice that the waiters act totally differently whenever my American parents are visiting than when I’m just out with friends and speaking German.

With Germans they just show up with the card reader and we pay one by one; often people will ask to round up their bill to the nearest Euro but it’s not expected.

With my parents (or other Americans that have visited me) they often act like American waiters and bring the bill and then kind of hover next to us and wait for us to initiate what we want to do next. I think they’ve learned that most Americans will assume ‘this is the part where we work out how much tip to give’ and the waiters often end up with a (for German standards) gigantic tip. At least this always works with my parents since ‘we feel bad not tipping!’

ECB ,

Or they could have been kitchen-staff. They are one of the biggest victims of tipping culture.

Essentially chefs are generally paid much, much less than wait-staff and it is very difficult to correct this balance. The reason is that in a normal business you would raise prices to afford to pay higher salaries, but since tips are percentage based this also raises the wages of wait-staff. This becomes a bigger and bigger issue the higher the tipping percentage goes. Restaurant margins tend to be razor thin as well, so raising prices would be the only way to raise kitchen-staff wages.

It’s one reason why many restaurants are struggling to find kitchen-staff, because even highly trained chefs can make 2-3 times as much working front-of-house. There are quite a few restaurants which are trying to fix this by banning tips, but it’s difficult due to resistance from customers and wait-staff.

ECB ,

There are plenty of people in your situation (I’m also one of them), but the fact is that (unless you’re at the very top of the pyramid) nearly everyone (including people like us) is a bit worse off than they would have been at a comparable stage in life 30 - 60 years ago.

I had to work hard and make sacrifices to make it, however with my qualifications my parents (and even moreso my grandparents) generation would have just walked into secure, high-paying jobs with real prospects of advancement. Instead I’ve got to constantly be switching jobs and looking out for myself in order to not fall behind. I know the rules of the game, so I do what I have to do.

Now just imagine people who 50 years ago would have been ‘making it with sacrifices and hard work’, since (virtually) everyone is now a bit worse off, their situation has shifted to ‘underwater despite sacrifices and hard work’.

TLDR: The average millennial is poorer than past generations and it’s harder to make it than before. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t large amount of individual millennials (like us) who DO make it, although even for this group (unless they are at the top of the pyramid) it’s harder than before.

ECB ,

That’s just saying “people who are in a social community are happier and more engaged than those that aren’t” because most social communities are currently religious focused.

ECB ,

There are quite a few games which were developed primarily with kb+m in mind, but also have some controller support. So you might hit a menu or gameplay section that really requires typing or something.

On steam deck this works pretty well with the pop-up keyboard, but a physical keyboard is always a bit nicer

ECB ,

Doesn’t the original only have a single save slot?

So you’d need at least a third copy for both of you to get all three.

ECB ,

Ah yeah I see!

I was just thinking of trying to do it without erasing anyone’s game or making them start over.

ECB ,

Or, arguably even more importantly, conservatives argue that this is actually about ‘mental health issues’ but then subsequently refuse to do anything to improve mental health. So they don’t even bother trying their own proposed solution.

You would think at this point that the US would have the most robust mental-healthcare system on the planet!

I’d like multiplayer shooters that put emphasis on clean visuals designed to transmit information as well as more emphasis on movement.

Even with all the hats, visibility in TF2 is a masterpiece compared to 90% of games. One team always bright red, one team is always bright blue. The maps aren’t full of noisy scenery and still look great.

ECB ,

Valorant I can’t speak to, since I can’t play it on Linux.

CS I’ve played a lot of and it’s fantastic just a bit too slow paced/tactical for me. Your right though that it’s a fantastically designed game and a really good shout.

Overwatch I strongly disagree with. The maps have clean lines, but with the character design, abilities, and UI they clearly prioritise being flashy over anything else. It’s really visually loud for the sake of it and too much for me.

ECB ,

Yeah, I kind of intentionally avoided saying AFPS because unfortunately these days that tends to mean (like with diabotical) games which are desperate to be the most hypercompetitive aspects of quake. Duels or FFA aren’t really my thing, give me teams and objectives!

Perhaps unsurprisingly UT2k4 is one of my favorite of all time

ECB ,

I’ve been enjoying it on the deck but I haven’t found any settings to make it run smooth as butter.

Especially in the last act where there is a lot going on I had to switch to my desktop.

That said, I actually prefer the interface on the deck to the desktop, despite being historically a pc guy

ECB ,

For me it’s less about bandwidth and more about not having to worry about building/ maintaining ratio. It’s just one less thing to think about.

I love seeding so I thought private trackers would be for me, but it’s so hard to go positive when EVERYONE is trying to. Yeah, there is freeleach but then I was downloading a bunch of stuff that I didn’t want, just for the sake of it.

(Solved) How to replicate the windows' US International layout with dead keys?

I use a keyboard with an american layout because I find it much much better for programming. However, since I’m portuguese, I want to use some characters that don’t exist in the american layout, such as á, é or ç. In windows I selected the US international layout with with dead keys and I could do everything....

ECB ,

I used to use US international, but a few years back switched to Eurkey which is essentially just an upgraded/turbocharged version.

Might be too much for you, but I can’t live without it nowadays!

Hmmm I’m a data scientist and regularly run/train various deep learning models for my job using a 3gb 1060.

Not saying that more than 4gb isn’t necessary for many applications, but it’s far from useless!

ECB ,

Honestly, I agree with this completely. I got into private trackers earlier this year and after a couple months just quit. On public torrents I have a seed ratio over 5.0, since I have gigabit upload and just like giving back, but private trackers just ended up being a pain.

Having to manage ratios was a pain. Having to build your ratio with freeleech was a pain. I never had a single torrent get a positive ratio. To top it off, I didn’t even find the selection to be much better than public trackers.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I tried 3-4 and then just gave up. Too many rules and not enough reason to use it.

Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I’ve tried using it over the years but I never liked it because there was no information. So last night I looked at my local city and there is almost no information at all. I spent a few hours last night adding buildings and restaurants and removing incorrect items. It was actually kind of fun and therapeutic and I plan to do...

ECB ,

We use OSM quite a bit for various things at my job (transport logistics software). We’re generally concerned with UK cities, where the coverage is quite good, however we often find little things which aren’t quiiiite right and make a fix or two.

It’s a really cool project, overall
