Carlo ,

I’m pretty sure it’s a big truck, that you can just dump things on.

Carlo ,

Thanks for the Moving Out tip! I’m always looking for couch co-op stuff to play with my daughter, and this looks right up our alley.

Carlo ,

I’m confused. Are you planning to burn your rich neighbor as well, or just the leaves? SCOTUS is probably not on board with the former, but you’d get plenty of support on lemmy.

Carlo ,

I picked up “Yakuza 0” on sale not too long ago, and I’m enjoying it so much that I picked up the rest of the remastered series while it was on sale. Based on how long I’m spending mucking around in the first one, It may take me the rest of my life to get through them all. I don’t know how “Like a Dragon” compares to the earlier games, but I really enjoy the narrative, combat, sub-stories, and mini-games in “0”.

As an aside, I really enjoy a well-done pool mini-game. I probably spent more time playing pool in the various space stations in “Rebel Galaxy Outlaw” than doing anything else. Likewise, Kiryu spends a lot of time in the pool hall, as well as hanging around the batting cages, and fine-tuning his pocket racers.

Carlo ,

That sounds interesting. It looks like you’re right, though; I couldn’t find an English translation, at any rate. Luckily, the search reminded me how much I loved The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi, and now I’m planning to hit the bookstore when it opens.

Carlo ,

Sorry to take so long to respond! It’s a novel set in a plausible near-future in which existing power structures have been fragmented by the effects of climate change. It follows a handful of disparate characters in the western US, and talks a lot about the water politics of the Colorado river. It’s very well-written (claims random internet guy, but hey—you asked!). Can also recommend https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6597651-the-windup-girl by the same author. Same eco-dystopian timeline, set in Thailand. Delves more into issues surrounding AI and genetic engineering.

Republicans have gotten more done in minority positions than Democrats have when in majority position over the past 20 years.

Accepting this premise, the things Republicans have gotten done have been objectively detrimental to humanity. The direct result of not voting for Democrats is electing more Republicans. This is the reality that currently exists. No amount of self-righteous rhetoric will alter that. So if you’re going to continue disseminating this ill-considered garbage, just face the fact that you’re effectively a Trump supporter.

Honestly, I have more respect for maga types than for people who pose as leftists while advancing a fascist agenda.

Carlo ,

people who pose as leftists while advancing a fascist agenda.

So Democrats?

Oh, no, this is embarrassing. It’s you. I was talking about you. Sorry, I thought that was clear. The mistake dipshits like you always make is this emotional appeal:

You are fucking delusional if you think Democrats are working on your side.

No shit, a political party is not “on your side.” This kind of rhetoric betrays such a childish approach to politics. That’s not how any of this works.

It’s a binary choice, and you’re shilling for fascism. It’s anyone’s guess whether or not that’s your intention—but that really doesn’t matter to anyone but you.

Carlo ,

I’m not your bro, and I don’t believe you’re arguing in good faith. This particular clumsy mix of buzzwords certainly doesn’t make you sound like a human being. I’ll address this one more time, and then never engage with you again.

Your argument , you entire refusal to hold Democrats accountable by being critical of them and withholding your support to force them to come to you, it’s why we’re in this mess.

My decision to vote for the only viable candidate who doesn’t obviously intend to dismantle all democratic institutions hardly constitutes a refusal to hold Democrats accountable. Those are the stakes in this particular election. The direct result of the action you’re advocating would be to hand power to an aspiring dictator.

YOU are the white moderate MLK warned us about.

You argue like a fash—completely unsupported assertions bolstered by oafish emotional appeals. I’m done with you.

Carlo ,

For a really fun prank, coerce your friends into driving truckfuls of nitroglycerin hundreds of miles down a dodgy road through the jungle.

Carlo ,

Sounds like a great memory! Reminds me of watching Cheaper by the Dozen while the mortars walked toward us. Highly recommend watching Sorcerer, if you’re in the mood for some nitro-fueled tension.

Carlo ,

Fucking Orwellian ghoul. Shit like this only helps Trump. What the hell is he trying to accomplish by calling anti-genocide protestors fascists? Who does he think is going to believe it?

Emergency rooms refused to treat pregnant women, leaving one to miscarry in a lobby restroom (apnews.com)

One woman miscarried in the restroom lobby of a Texas emergency room as front desk staff refused to admit her. Another woman learned that her fetus had no heartbeat at a Florida hospital, the day after a security guard turned her away from the facility. And in North Carolina, a woman gave birth in a car after an emergency room...

Carlo ,

The people voting for those politicians also bear the responsibility.

Audit says Arkansas governor's office potentially violated laws with $19,000 lectern purchase (apnews.com)

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders ’ office potentially violated state laws on purchasing, state property and government records when it purchased a $19,000 lectern for the Republican governor that’s prompted nationwide attention, an audit requested by lawmakers said Monday....

Carlo ,

I still can’t believe SHS got elected governor. She’s a horrible nepo baby whose only qualification was her big national gig telling ridiculous lies on TV every day. Like, what the actual fuck, Arkansas? Then again, Texas’s elected officials are at least as bad worse. So, yeah.

Carlo ,

I think an interrobang would have been a game-changer for Jeb’s campaign. And yes, name recognition makes a big difference. It’s maddening that consent for dynasties seems so easy to manufacture.

Carlo ,

~98.6° is what I grew up learning, but it’s really a range of around 97°-99° depending on the person.

Carlo ,

Sure! Never argued otherwise.

Carlo ,

Theoretically, if you had such technology, maybe you could use it to rehabilitate instead of punish. Being able to undergo months or years of therapy in a matter of hours could be extremely beneficial.

Carlo ,

I mean, setting aside the danger inherent in creating demi-god wizards, there’s no reason they couldn’t do both.

Carlo ,

I think that the therapist(s) in this case would have to be AI. The person could be in their own little simulation, experiencing a reality tailored to addressing whatever psychological problems they might have. It’s all science fiction, anyhow. There’s no theoretical, let alone practical basis for this technology afaik.

Carlo ,

As a Texan, who the fuck knows? Definitely wasn’t decided by plebiscite. I mean, seriously, a bullet train to Dallas?

Carlo ,

Dallas? Nobody in Houston wants to go to fucking Dallas.

Carlo ,

Yeah, it’s a fair cop. I’m sure the train would see plenty of use. It’s just that I’ve lived in and around Houston for a plurality of my life, and the only thing that really makes me feel connected to my fellow Houstonians is a shared, exaggerated disdain for Dallas.

Carlo ,

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t care about those things, or sports. Not many other things come to mind that Houston broadly agrees on.

Carlo ,

I’m not invested in it at all; it’s supposed to be funny. And I’m not hostile to the rodeo, it’s just never appealed to me. Honestly, I don’t know that you’d get broad consensus on any of this stuff across greater Houston— excepting support for local sports teams—it’s pretty heterogenous. Then again, what do I know; I just live here, I’ve never really felt like part of the community. That’s kind of the point!

Carlo ,

That’s what bugged me about this meme: as @Turun points out above, you’d have to travel billions of years into the past in order to wind up that far away. Nobody using a time machine would have any reason to do that, unless it was part of some fiendish plot against humanity, à la the Temporal Cold War from Star Trek: Enterprise. We should all demand more accuracy in our science memes.

Carlo ,

Definitely a totally valid read! I try to indulge my pedantic impulses without being too obnoxious. And I didn’t mean to imply that you were also being critical of the meme.

Carlo ,

To supplement the other answer here, Lemmy is home to a (relatively) large community of people who LARP as leftists. They claim exclusive access to the moral high ground, while uncritically parrotting state propaganda from Russia, China, the DPRK, and anyone else who appears to stand against western hegemony. Their sole creed is that the USA is the Great Satan, and obviously anyone who opposes Satan should be heeded. Tribal dipshits that rarely argue in good faith; in behavior, not dissimilar to former residents of r/the_donald.

Carlo ,

Trump is a blustering idiot, but he’s also a criminal facing bankruptcy and prison time. Even if we were to disregard every terrible thing he did in office, (and we’d be incredibly stupid to do so) we’d surely be fools to ignore his repeatedly stated intentions to wield dictatorial power and imprison his political enemies.

Extrapolating a bit from your comment: I, too, would like to have a national left-wing party to support in this country. It ain’t the Democrats, and likely never will be. We’ll need to reform the electoral system to make room for such a party. In this year’s presidential election, that’s not on the ballot, and no amount of self-righteous rhetoric will alter that.

It’s a binary choice.

Carlo ,

Well, there were a certain number of disaffected Sanders primary voters that switched to Trump when Clinton “won” the primary in 2016.

I feel compelled to point out—because a certain subset of people continue to blame progressives for Trump’s 2016 win—that in the 2008 election, 25% of Clinton’s primary supporters voted McCain in the general.*

*See table on page 9

Carlo ,

I agree that any leftist person with two brain cells to rub together ought to have voted for Clinton in the general. I voted Sanders in the primary, and I certainly turned out for her. Maybe it’s just because I’ve blocked most of the tankie dipshits masquerading as leftists, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone claim otherwise that wasn’t a bona fide fash.

I do think it’s both fallacious and counterproductive to blame Sanders supporters for Clinton’s loss, considering they voted for her at a much higher rate than Clinton’s own supporters did for Obama in 2008. Fully 25% of Clinton’s 2008 primary supporters voted McCain in the general. By comparison, only 12% of Sanders supporters voted Trump.

Carlo ,

I don’t think a 4x strategy game is the best approach to the franchise. What’s more, this game used the Stellaris engine, and there’s already an excellent, total-conversion Star Trek mod for Stellaris.

I’d love to see a Trek game by a competent adventure dev like Wadget Eye. Hopefully Resurgence will be good, but I’ll not be holding my breath; most recent Trek games have been low quality cash-grabs, bulging with microtransactions.

Carlo , (edited )

Thank you for the correction, I remember reading about the Epic exclusivity now. I look forward to picking it up when it goes on sale! Such is my way. I knew there was a solid Star Trek Stellaris scene, but I’m just a dabbler in 4x games. My favorite Trek games are probably A Final Unity and the Interplay TOS adventures from 30 years ago.

Edited to add, Bridge Crew is moderately fun as a single player game. Would probably be a blast with a group of friends.

Carlo ,

I don’t think you can ethically separate art from artist when the artist is still alive, profiting from their work, and using those profits to further causes that you abhor. JKR doesn’t limit herself to expressing her views on social media.

Carlo ,

I don’t know the extent of Dahl’s antisemitism, and am not currently inclined to research it. I also enjoyed his stories growing up, as well as Lovecraft’s, and lots of other authors who held views that I strongly disagree with. I don’t think all art created by deeply flawed people is worthless, by any means.

However, I strongly disagree with the notion that a piece of high-quality art is some kind of ethical trump card; it’s a bald-faced cop-out. Providing material support to someone who habitually crusades against an oppressed minority isn’t a gray area because you(rhetorically—I don’t mean you, personally) like their stories. Art is everywhere. There’s really no dearth of excellent stories written by people that are either dead, or don’t spend their time stirring up hate.

Carlo ,

Yeah, I feel like we’re mostly talking past each other. Cheers!

But my post was more about not beating yourself up about liking something made by a terrible person.

And I agree, that would be silly.

Carlo ,

But seriously. I’ve seen a thousand conversations where everybody bitches about some person or people.

In a number of your comments, you’ve said things like “you people are all the same.” What group of people are you talking about? Is your question directed at them (us?), or a separate group? All your statements and questions are vague and reductive, to the point that no one has any idea what you’re getting at.

Carlo ,

Listen, we can’t all live in Finland, mate. This is just rubbing it in. And you over there with your tall treetops and loffy mountains.

Carlo ,

Just referring to an old song. Cheers for the Finn-Facts, though! I think I remember reading about this mountain business somewhere.

Carlo ,

It looks like they’ll take certain items free, while others (like non-Best Buy branded televisions) you have to pay them to recycle. In California there’s no charge for store drop-off; I imagine because they have a dedicated e-waste recycling fee.

Carlo ,

Yeah, I only looked it up because I remembered being charged for dropping off a broken TV at a Texas location.

'I will not feed a demon': YouTuber Ruby Franke's child abuse case rooted in religious extremism (apnews.com)

Carlo ,

I’ve definitely applied this filter when selecting a therapist. In Texas, you can weed out a whole lot of them, because they’ll explicitly mention it in their bio.

Carlo ,

Happy to see that nearly all the biggest Lemmy instances are blocking it, with the glaring exception of lemmy.world, which is the largest by far. lemmy.world is to lemmy as AOL was to the early internet—the default bucket for those who don’t know any better.

Carlo ,
Carlo ,

Yeah, social media algorithms are doing a lot of damage. I wish there was more general awareness of this. Based on personal experience, I think many people actually like being fed relevant content, and are blind to the consequences. I think Lemmy is great, because you have to curate your own feed, but many people would never use it for that very reason. I don’t know what the solution is.

Carlo ,

Oh, noes! There’s only like a billion other instances you can access it from.

Carlo ,

AI Truman won’t be released from the Disney Vault until 2026. They’ll be laying the groundwork later this year with the introduction of new Marvel hero Buck Stopper, whose identity will eventually be revealed as the long-dead president.
