I'm invited to be jury of a thesis in 🇵🇹 which defence could be attended either in person or remotely. I find a decent route by from 🇫🇷 , via 🇪🇸 for a total of 4 trains to reach the destination and about 2 days in the train / stations, both ways for 2 days in Porto.

Regardless of the cost,, and considering the potentiel benefit in terms of exemplarity, would you attend in person ?

@jknodlseder @academicchatter I didn’t follow the work during the PhD, but I’m still one of the two main jury members.

The point I forgot to mention is that I spent 4 years in that team as post-doc and I never came back to Porto since 2016. I’m tempted.

(And I don’t have port wine anymore at home 😅)

En route to to attend a jury at the Geneva , which is located near the French border outside Geneva.

Instead of renting a , as I used to do in the past, this time I’m renting… a bike to go from the station to my (about 16km away) and the diary to the observatory.

I've just computed that if you want to ONE by to (about 2880 tCO2, according to @labos1point5), by not sending (without attachment), I need to completely stop sending emails for the next ...

272 YEARS !

assuming an average of 10 mails per day, each working . The of an email is considered to be 4g CO2eq.

It's much easier to @StayGrounded_net !

@Anthro @labos1point5 @StayGrounded_net @academicchatter

Yeah, if my memory is good, 8h of zoom is up to 192 gCO2eq (that's assuming 8h with the camera on and screen sharing), which is equivalent of ~1km with a gasoline car or ~1km by plane.

500 miles by air flight is roughly equivalent to 9 continuous months of zoom (with screen sharing and camera on).

AlexSanterne OP ,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@knud @labos1point5 @StayGrounded_net @academicchatter

Yeah, I know. I'm leaving 5km away from my house. When I drive to work (electric car) to spend my all day on zoom, my main source of emission is ... to actually go to my institute.

(without considering the emissions from my institute which don't depend if I go or not).

Hey!

I am a PhD candidate in Tartu, searching for the imprints of dynamical friction in different environments, and how through this there might be a possibility to constrain the properties of dark matter and other dynamics in galaxies. Supervised by Rain Kipper.

I am very interested in galactic dynamics, computational astronomy and lately I am exploring superbubbles in NGC628 as seen by JWST-MIRI.

@KiwiskiNZ @StayGrounded_net @labos1point5 @academicchatter thanks. I acknowledge it is way easier in Europe with a quite decent train network (could be better of course), compared to an island like NZ.

Congrats too…

@Reddog @StayGrounded_net @labos1point5 @academicchatter i should’ve mentioned that before that, I was flying 1-2 times per month for my work.

Mitigation potential of modal shift from plane to train as a function of distance. Vertical lines correspond to median time travel by train and rectangles express the uncertainty related to train speed, with 150 km/h±60 km/h. The three numbers indicate key routes in France with 1: Paris-Toulouse, 2. Paris-Montpellier and 3. Paris-Nice, contributing respectively to 14%, 7% and 16% of total domestic GHG emission from air travel.
Percentage of total (plane, train, car) travel-induced GHG reductions from single or combined options. Colors represent the intensity in GHG mitigation potential with yellow options offering the greatest potential. Each column corresponds to a specific modal shift policy, characterized by a threshold distance(and average travel time), below which a complete shift from plane to train is assumed. Modal shift options are always applied first. Each line corresponds to a specific air travel moderation policy applied at research unit scale. Moderation options are expressed in missions (equivalent to a round trip) and modal shift are considered per segment (equivalent to a one way trip). Options which correspond to actual per-capita per-year research unit median are presented at the third modality in each moderation option (i.e.,1 conference every 3yrs, 1 trip every 4 years, 5,800 km and 1 trip per yr).

In previous years, I've invited undergrads to post to Tw*tter during my class sessions, as an alternate way to participate & as a shared (public) backchannel adding extra digital materials to our conversations.

This year, for obvious reasons, that's impossible, so I'm asking them to do so via Mastodon (which none of my students have used before).

It'll be a little experiement. Let's see whether gets any use from my students.

So many of my colleagues are now joining other social networks... 🤣
