Wait until MCI goes behind your back and changes your service to them, and you get hit with a $300 bill that month, because every call is “long distance”. Yeah. Landlines were great.

Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I’m curious, how many people are aware of these sounds. I have designed, etched, and built my own switching power supplies along with winding my own transformers. I am aware of the source of the noise. So, does anyone else hear these high frequency sounds regularly?

Could you be hearing the Hum?

Edit. This article makes implies that people can’t hear it, but many people can, and, while it causes a mild annoyance with most of those that can hear it, it has caused severe disturbances in others.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Very true. Saying the cameras don’t work is enough to keep the cops out of it. After all, hearsay between kids is never taken seriously. No footage, means no proof, means no cops. Then they can keep the facade of the school being crime-free.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

That is some BS! Honestly, I probably would have dealt with that kid schoolyard-style (though, I’m not proud of that as an adult). My school never pretended the cameras were out of service. They just got rid of them after a teacher was accused of inappropriate behavior with a senior. Claimed they never worked. He “left for another state” later that week. I’m sure it was unrelated…

Sounds like he was trying to get what he needed to learn the maths, even if screwed over his friends. Hopefully he learned from it, improved himself, and didn’t do something like that again. After all, we all did stupid things growing up. You seemed to have handled it really well. Good on you!

Yeah, it was really bad. And I wish I could say it was the first of its kind at that school. Or the last. But I wasn’t either. That principal was a joke who had his boys club going strong. Last I heard, he was black-listed from all educational institutions, public and private. I hope that was a permanent ban. I’m not sure about the others who committed these acts, though.

Moka pots are great for many reasons. One of those reasons is that you can get good coffee out of almost any reasonable grind size. My recommendation would be to play around with it, taking notes on grind variables and resulting taste profiles.

If your grinder is a blade grinder, I would recommend to grind to just as the grounds start to stick to the bottom. For me, that’s about 20± seconds for the 4 mark. I only usually use a blade grinder at work, and only sometimes, as I prefer a burr grinder. Don’t grind finer than espresso, or you risk a pipe bomb type of explosion. Moka pots can be subjected to massive amounts of pressure during the brewing process, and too fine of a grind can clog the release, essentially creating a bomb (one of the scariest days of my life).

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

I agree 100%. I don’t like autoreboots, but fully understand why they exist. People, in general, just stopped rebooting regularly. I have disabled autoreboot for a select few PCs in our environment, but I follow up with them within one week after I get notified that their computer updated and they haven’t rebooted. Most people in this group reboot within a day or two. I usually have to remind only one person.

I slightly disagree on one aspect. I have read several studies (relatively short term, but still) about how WFH and Remote Work employees are measurably and significantly more effective and productive than their in-office counterparts. Evidence actually supports remote work.

I always spoof the ua. Not for privacy (though it helps), but because some sites artificially break for certain browsers or OSs and work perfectly fine when they think you’re on a different browser. The artificial restriction should be illegal, but it isn’t.

I do that at home (not the webmaster bit), but at work I’m usually in a hurry and switching between different admin panels, so it’s constantly set to something that will work with ABM, intune, and MS admin (there are more admin panels, but those the ones always giving me the “your browser is not supported” bs). Not chrome, though.

You’re right. But they don’t need to win the legal battle. They just need you to give up (lose) the legal fight. If enough people give up, the rest will stop fighting, and Disney wins the war. They’re rich enough and greedy enough that it can work.

I didn’t find one that consistently worked. I ended up installing a windows VM and using Audio Grabber. It’s ancient, but it works every time for me. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m wondering if it will work through Wine. I need to try that, but I’ll probably try some of the native Linux recommendations on here first.

It’s almost like privatizing public services is, somehow, a bad idea. But, but, but… capitalism…

E: jokes aside. The findings in these studies, while obvious to some (possibly most) people, are extremely important. Feelings without supporting data, are just opinions. Feeling with supporting data, are facts. Because of this study, we now have facts to fight against further privatization of public services.

A quick google search shows that this is fake…

Switched from Manjaro to Fedora after being told Manjaro is "a bad distro" by many. Looking for a telnet terminal such as Syncterm to run on rpm or flatpak. (lemmy.zip)

Welp, I made a similar thread yesterday regarding Manjaro but I decided to swap to Fedora as my daily driver for stability purposes. Unfortunately since fedora is yet another non Debian distro I need help finding a Syncterm replacement....

I’ve heard that Manjaro is a “bad OS”, but I’ve been using it for a few years and haven’t had any issues with it. As a noob, though, is probably avoid most Arch distros, though. They’re not impossible or anything, but they can be intimidating and may leave a bad taste of Linux in your mouth if they’re not set up right. I do like Fedora quite a bit. It and OpenSuse are my dailys. Mint was my go-to for years, and I would still highly recommend it for beginners. (E) Mint is a deb based distro.
