Does GrapheneOS have microg or similar now? The last time I used it, it didn’t have it, and some apps (Signal, I’m looking at you) had a constant notification. I went to CalyxOS, which I like fine, but it’s more for the masses (gives up a little privacy for convenience) than GrapheneOS is.

In highschool, I got a desktop from a yard sale (Pentium I) and got an HDD from goodwill, all for $10, just to install FreeBSD. It was awesome. I think I still have the desktop somewhere in storage.

Haven’t seen Santoku or Kali or several other special use-case distros (E: or Hannah Montana Linux hahahaha). But, yes, this is exactly the community I love and that extreme hate/love for specific distros is the reason I tried Linux in the first place (and the reason I stayed) hahaha

Nnnnnnnnnope. I give them the 7z and tell them where to get 7Zip. If they have WinRAR isntalled, then they also likely hide their extensions, and won’t even know they received a more modern archive. If all they have is Windows’s WinZip implementation, then they’ll need to install 7Zip or something. You don’t want to install it? Then I guess you’re not getting the file you so desperately want, because I’m not resending it in a .zip. 7z for the win.

Thank goodness! Finally, I won’t have to suffer through “suggestions” that are unrelated to anything I’ve watched and are just pushing clickbait. It does make sense though. They can’t suggest anything, if they can’t digest what you’ve watched.

After trying secure boot out, my Ethernet connections don't work anymore?

Hey. Short story: I activated Secure boot on my MSI Mainboard and bootet in my new Debian. I realized that I had no wired internet connection and rebooted the system to deactivate secure boot again. Problem is that now my whole Ethernet is borked? I don’t get a connection in Debian or my older OpenSuse partition and the Debian...

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Try booting into a live image of a debian distro (pick any one you want that can boot into a live image), then try the Ethernet port. Is it working? If not, either your bios shut it off or the port is broken. Several years ago, I had a broken wifi adaptor that happened to break at the exact same time as (or super close thereto) me installing GIMP. No way GIMP caused it. If the port does work on the live image, then it’s likely a driver issue with your install. Try it and let us know the results.

Came here to say to go with Stubb’s, but the jalapeno one. It’s SOOO good!! Dude. So good…

Also, therapy is amazing, and you should totally return. It’s a step to you getting better. Feeling this way sucks balls, but the world isn’t as bad as it seems, and sometimes, it takes a therapist to help you see that. If doing the things you love doesn’t cheer you up, even a bit, you may benefit from a psychiatrist that can prescribe an antidepressant and work with you on your recovery. Saved my best friend’s life. Like everything, there are bad ones and good ones and great ones (psychiatrists and antidepressants), but keep fighting so you can find one that will help you. Good luck, my dude. Hang in there, and know that an internet stranger is rooting hard for you!

One thing I learned, is that, most of the time, someone is only out of your league if you believe they are. I don’t know you (beyond our little conversation here) or her (at all), but it sounds like you have a lot to offer. And, no, not giving her everything, but that part shows me that you’re emotionally available, or, at the very least, willing to be. Although, I don’t know if I would recommend dating or pursuing a coworker, as it can lead to some very unpleasant situations.

Another thing I’ve learned, happiness and success are not actually linked to one another. I know several well-off to bumtasticlly rich people who, I think, everyone would categorize as super successful, and they are some of the most unhappy people. I also know rich people who are happy, and poor people who are happy, and poor people who are unhappy. My point is that money and success won’t make you happy.

Money makes life easier sometimes, but good friends (emphasis on the good), I think, add more happiness than a ton of money.

I think the BetterHelp thing is a wonderful place to start, even if you have to bend the truth a bit to get in. You deserve happiness.

Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to be happy–that’s one of the hardest things to do after a stint (no matter how long or short) of depression. Tell yourself every single day that you deserve to be happy and you are going to be happy today. Literally, write it on a stickynote on the mirror “I deserve to be happy, and I will be happy today” and read it out loud (even as a whisper) every morning. Maybe add a phone reminder to remind you of this fact throughout the day.

01189998819991197253 ,
@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah, that’s a hard one. On one hand, we always want to be who we think she wants us to be when we’re first dating, but on the other hand, this isn’t sustainable. Eventually, our true selves come out, leading to statements like “you’re not the man I started dating” or whatnot and it could lead to a breakup. I’m of the belief that if someone doesn’t like me for me, then she doesn’t deserve to have me. That said, however, there’s nothing wrong with having (safe and respectful) fun as we wait for the one.

If the job is temporary and finding another job is relatively easy, the risk is minimal. If the job isn’t temporary, but it’s not the career you want, the risk is higher but not high. If the job is in the field you want to career in, the risk is high. Of course, if the consequences of dating a coworker is basically termination, they (your employers) don’t need to know. I think it’s unethical to date your subordinate or your supervisor/manager, but I don’t see anything ethically wrong with dating a coworker.

Honestly, dude. We gotta make this life count and, sometimes, that means taking calculated risks (like dating a coworker), and sometimes it means playing it safe (like not risking reassignment). You can conduct a risk analysis (be brutally honest with yourself), and decide if it’s worth pursuing. I fell in love with my best friend (stupid move, I know). I sat on it as long as I could. Eventually, I was starting to see the world in unsaturated colors. I did a risk analysis on asking her out with the potential of losing my best friend. I was determined that I wouldn’t allow this to completely destroy our friendship, and finally built the courage to do ask her out. She said no. And it was super awkward for a week or so. But I kept being her friend. She changed her mind to “I’ll think about it”. Shoot, I’ll take that! A week or so later we gave it a shot. She fell in love a week after that, and we’ve been together since. These things can happen, but they’re the exception. The thing is, even if we don’t realize we’re doing this, we’re all looking for our One, but are all super cautious of one another, trying our best to guard our hearts. This causes rifts to grow between us, and we go from potential friends to “just coworkers”. Seriously, I see this going both ways and they’re both equally plausible, so I truly don’t know which to recommend :( All I can say is to run the risk analysis and determine whether this is a risk you’re willing to take, and I can also say that whichever you do decide, know that I support it and have got your back as best as an internet stranger can.

It is endlessly frustrating that companies have universally decided that they won’t let people say “no” to stuff, ever. What are the benefits to the US Electoral College system?

So I’m a New Zealander and I have a pretty good idea on how the electoral college system works but it honestly sounds like something that can be easily corrupted and it feels like it renders the popular vote absolutely useless unless I’m totally missing something obvious?...

This may sound cynical, but in my experience with it, 100 people are a lot easier to bribe than 230 million.

E: see, the people vote, and the EC are supposed to vote for what their state’s people vote for. But, as free citizens, they’re allowed to vote for who they want. So, we may get into situations, where the popular vote in a state was for A, but the EC vote was for B. The EC are supposed to represent their state, but should also be allowed to vote for the candidate they think is best (like the other citizens). IMO, it should be a point system. Each state gets the points of the EC count they currently have. The state’s popular vote decides the candidate that gets the points of the state. The EC is disolved. Done. This allows the popular vote to win, while still maintaining the original reason for the EC (rural states have less people, but now have as much of a voting power as urban states, when compared to popular votes alone).

Kind of like adding a little chip to the charger cable of a cellphone that identifies the charger as a brand cable and without that chip, the phone won’t charge or use the perfectly good cable for data transfer. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s what Apple did/does.

No. For sure it’s shitty wiring. It’s also next to the AC unit, so had a lot of EMF radiation every time the motor kicks on. But incandescent survives all of this for a year or so, while, apparently, LED only survives 3 days.

It’s right next to the AC unit and gets a lot of EMF radiation every time the blower motor kicks on. Incandescent survives all of this for a year or so. You are probably right, though. I need to get a tester and see the voltage and amperage coming out of that on a timeline.

From the article:

“We work hard to build great products, and what consumers do with those tools is up to them — not Apple, and not broadband providers,” Cynthia Hogan, VP of public policy at Apple

Prove it, then. Unlock the bootloader. Allow us to install our own apps. Let us install our own OS on the hardware. I get they don’t want to open source their iOS, that’s fine. They say “what consumers do with those tools is up to them”, but then they lock those tools down TIGHT. Actions speak much louder than words. They say those tools are ours? They need to show us that this is true.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

You’re right. But it’s so much worse than that.

Imagine, for a minute, that this passes. If a website exists that a specific entity disagrees with (say… a whistleblower forum, or accounts of how Google is abusing its powers, or accounts of a Government is abusing it’s citizens), all that would need to happen, is for the “integrity authority” to deny access to that site, and it will be censored. Whereas now, a website has to be taken offline (in most cases) to be effectively censored, if this passes, the “integrity authority” would just need to say nay.

Imagine never hearing of the Snowden files, or George Floyd, or the Russian-Ukraine war. Not because they didn’t exist or didn’t happen, but because you ‘weren’t allowed’ to see them by an entity who benefits from you not seeing them or knowing about them.

If this passes, we would be -officially- entering a dystopia.

01189998819991197253 ,
@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

At first, maybe. But not ultimately. If you compare it to TLS, for example, if the site use TLS 1.0, your browser will simply not load the site. This web integrity thing is similar.

Another, maybe more relevant, example, is Flash. Once Google decided Flash will no longer be supported on their browser, Flash died. I actually don’t disagree with the killing of Flash, but the idea is similar.

I still use Macromedia Flash 5 from time to time, to create quick animations to be used in videos. I haven’t found anything as easy to use. Maybe you know something? I’ve tried a few things, can’t remember the names, but paid stuff, free stuff, and FOSS stuff. MacF5 is easier and quicker.

01189998819991197253 ,
@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

That’s true. But the “integrity authority” has the power to censor. Maybe that’s not how it will be used now, but the infrastructure will be there and ready to use.

When I see these things come about, I’m always reminded of that quote, “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should”
