I've finished: The Power by Naomi Alderman

The Power asks the question; What if women were the stronger sex.

It is an interesting sci-fi question with allot of potential and while it was interesting to see the inversion of the power dynamics, Alderman did not go much further than opposite world.

Her answer seem to be, just as bad as men.

This is a legitimate point of view, but I would have hoped for a more speculative novel.

Hi! The "should I do a newsletter" poll has closed and it's tight. 42% would like a newsletter, 33% say no, they are over email. 8% were a maybe and 17% were other.

For the “other." people were looking for RSS feeds or read on a website which, thankfully, is available for the newsletter. No idea when the first issue will be published but will advertise here with link to access via RSS and web.

They are so hilarious! Just started with Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol and I'm loving Gogol's humorous writing style 🤣

As a pun lover, I like the aptness that my reaction to "Where the Crawdads Sing" , book 9 for 2024 was indeed NEIN. I only finished it because I had to, since it was a prompt for the 2024 onboarding challenge @thestorygraph Still, it did put a long ago favourite track into my head,. "Crawdads" did NOT boil my crawfish

My stats @thestorygraph looking good for 2024 so far, my first ever 100% NF wheel. And a very high average rating, that's going to drop like a stone when I finish my 1st fiction book for 2024, "When the Crawdads Sing"

Hey, mastodon! Nerds of a Feather is reviewing a bunch of Novellas this month, and I have the honour of contributing the first review of Nerds today. It's a review of Indra Das's 'Last Dragoners of Bowbazar', which is a thoughtful meditation on memory, identity, and coming of age, but which does not quite deliver on the promised dragons.

Most of my home continent is underwater

But I do enjoy reading about my ancestry. On myTBR this year is a bioy of Gulzar, a famous Hindi/Urdu writer. I read a collection of his poems and essays about Partition (left image) in 2021 (most in English), as Partition is the reason I exist. It was a challenging, draining read. This year, I'm reading ABOUT him, in Hindi. (Right) The bio's title is "Zero Line ON Gulzar"

My 2024 reading thread is below!

Book 1: On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

5 stars

Stunning art, lovely found family, and a fun sci fi setting, all while managing to strike the perfect balance between cozy and yearning.

What's your first book of the new year?

I've decided to start with Periphylla, and Other Deep Ocean Attractions, by Garrett Ashley. It comes out this May, and if you're into short fiction, you may want to check it out / preorder:

I'm 50 pages in and I am really, really enjoying this book.

Truth is that there is always some form of repression, or enforced conformity exercised by people with power over those under their control….because their way is the only way and anything else is intolerable. And to break out of this would entail a lot of pain and a whole lot of courage.

Okay, I've decided that 2024 is finally going to be the year I get on . My Goodreads library import is currently in process and my 2024 goal of 52 books is set 👀

I read a lot of literary fiction, sci fi and speculative fiction more generally, nonfiction, historical fiction, and classics.

I love the look of some of the Storygraph features like mood tagging and buddy reads. Drop your username or DM me if you'd like to be friends!

After getting halfway through the 10-book "Reads the World" 2024 challenge at
@thestorygraph today with the brutal & emotionally draining "Out of Sri Lanka", getting to halfway through their 6-book 2024 onboarding challenge with Tina Fey's "Bossypants" is the perfect palate cleanser
