I know a lot of shitty things are happening in the world right now. But I get this feeling that most of the posts I see in lemmy feed are sad or depressing....
I try not to spam myself nowadays, but !superbowl has great photos, of course, but I also have a good bit of educational and scientific content and places you can go visit in person.
I post daily, so if you have even a remote interest in beautiful killer birds, give it a look. I just did another ELI5 research paper write up today, and with 250 types of owls, I can guarantee you stuff you’ve never seen before!
A federal government plan for hunters to kill thousands of invasive owls to protect the rapidly declining northern spotted owl has ruffled the feathers of dozens of animal advocacy groups....
The Barred Owl is much more adaptable than the Spotted Owl. At this point trying to stop the Barred Owl overtaking the Spotted Owl feels like trying hold back water.
One thing that could be a success in a less orthodox way is allowing the hybridization of the owls. Barred and Spotted Owls can mate successfully. The current problem with this approach is that hybrids all also killed in these programs.
They are not so similar visually, but since both are active at night, it makes positive identification more difficult when they would actually be hunted.
Many species of owls are in danger due to endless destruction of old growth forest necessary for owls. Owls do not build nests and require trees that have been around for about 100 years to be suitable to have natural cavities for them to nest and for the forest to have enough wildlife for them to eat. But this is also the most valuable timber, and the loss of this habitat has been the root of this problem.
EDIT: I just read this article again after putting it in one of the links above. If anyone is interested in the topic of this post, I highly recommend reading this article. It touches a lot on what not just the owls, but mankind is losing by us failing to care for these creatures.
Only one female remains in the Canadian wilderness, a symbol of the country’s inability to save a species on the verge of destruction as politicians dither and the logging continues.
“My mom, she’d tell us stories about them, how they’d grab us if we didn’t behave or if we were out too late,” remembers Hobart, now chief of the Spô’zêm First Nation. “When you hear the owls, you better be inside … I remember the owls and I remember the fear.”
It has been decades since he heard the haunting barks and trills of the diminutive owl, but with the terror gone, they remind him of the warm summer nights of his youth.
“When I tell my own kids that story, it feels different. Because they’ve never heard the sounds of the owl at night. I don’t know if they ever will.”

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !superbowl

I’m curious if any of you still use anything other than fediverse. Since discovering it last year I’ve deleted all my non fedi social media, and it feels great!
I was all set to scrap my Facebook account as I never used it anymore. Then when I starting posting daily to !superbowl, I basically set it up as a news feed for 50+ animals rescues to get me content.
I think my last post on Facebook other than responding to birthday wishes was 2 years ago.
The algorithm was recommending me a lot of crap for a long time, but lately it’s gotten better actually.
It’s still a pain to use, but for many rescues, it’s the only way to get daily news about them, so I use it more than ever now, but I’m not contributing anything back into it, other than hopefully increasing traffic to the rescues.
Supermarket responds after Reddit user’s warning about self-checkout overcharge — ‘Was annoyed that the total amount due on my supermarket purchase did not equate to the individual items I purchased.’::‘Was annoyed that the amount due on my Woolies purchase did not equate to the individual items I purchased.’
The news aggregator communities tend to post the clickbait titles verbatim because it’s generally frowned upon to editorialize them. However a few users do put a proper heading or a short summary in the post body which I appreciate.
We have our share of drama llamas here as you know, but we also have pictures of !crows, !cat, !superbowl.
If you follow !toronto and !vancouver you will see my picture posts of various cityscapes.
Lastly, beehaw.org is a bit closed off from some instances but their server is a bit more chill outside of their politics community.
Yeah it certainly feels that way to me too. I can’t speak for the rest of the Fediverse platforms (Friendica, Misskey, Mastodon, etc.) but Lemmy is certainly a tight-knit, active and generally friendly group…
You should have seen how it was like here before May this year, when there were only a few dozen users that posted or commented anything at all across all servers, call that tight knit.
Still, I’m so proud of everyone for help in keeping a friendly vibe for the most part, and for user reporting and mod actions keeping trolls at bay. There was quite a bit of concern that when people migrated from Reddit en masse that it Lemmy would be taken over by the same uninspired drivel or become a Reddit repost site. What we got are very healthy meme and shitpost communities with shitposters who engage with commentors, tech news, politics, environment news with active discussions where people have disagreed with each other without getting in a complete rage about it, and cute animal pics like !aww and !superbowl.
There’s still progress to be made on parts of the technical, moderation and community sides. For my part, I’m trying to post more and my goal this year is to share a lot pictures of the cityscape to Lemmy.
Scientists Have Reported a Breakthrough In Understanding Whale Language::Researchers have identified new elements of whale vocalizations that they propose are analogous to human speech, including vowels and pitch.
Seeing the story play out over the span of a few decades really hit home about how long we’ve let this stuff go on already and how long it can take for people to change views and seek justice. We just need to do all we can and keep trying to set the example.
Being the main contributor of !superbowl, my feeds get full of environmental destruction and habitat and species loss, and it’s tough to filter through all that every day looking for positive stories.
This is what I try to do with !superbowl to spread the word.
You can also look for related communities, like when I stopped by to say hello on !birding and let them know !superbowl was having the first annual Owl of the Year bracket tournament, going on now, that they might enjoy participating in.
I try to find times to let people know !superbowl is a place they can always go for a daily shot of positivity. I see a number of depressing stories in the top posts, do it’s good to know there’s a place to go to swish those depressing things out of your brain.
Other times people might not know !superbowl isn’t just pictures or memes like you may expect. We go into a lot of education, information, and awareness of animal resources too, as well as where you can go to see real live owls near you.
But it’s also important to spam tastefully. I posted a friendly post on LemmyBeWholesome, which I don’t typically go to, but guy immediately downvoted, so I just deleted the post and moved on, so I didn’t bother anyone if they didn’t want to see it. I feel organic growth is the way to go, so I try to get the word out fairly regularly while being careful I don’t mention !superbowl toooooon much.
So I just try to keep my spamming limited, try to target an audience, even if it’s just a few people at a time, and try to make the post friendly and entertaining so even if you didn’t go visit !superbowl immediately that !superbowl might get stuck in your head for later it you just noticed it more when !superbowl pops up on ALL, which it does a lot because we have a ton of fun there, especially now with the Owl of the Year, as it allows everyone to participate even if they don’t feel like they have anything to add to the conversation, which I don’t feel is true, but many people feel that way around themselves. Then when I see new people comment on posts, I try to welcome and acknowledge them all and upvote everyone who is polite so they feel like a party of the group.
So I hope this was helpful and entertaining for you, and if you want to check out some cool birds and learn about bird things, check it out !superbowl today!
I’m noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started....
Bad news overall for Hawaii’s birds and the shellfish that could clean up southern waterways.
I recently posted an article on !superbowl about how British Columbia is ignoring government orders to protect the last wild Spotted Owl in the country. With all the BS the US and Canada seems to be focused on, it’s sad they will just let things disappear forever.
SuperbOwl migrated from Reddit but nobody was doing anything with it. I try to post at least one owl a day. Currently I’m posting one owl rescue a day for each US state so people can visit and support them in person. Today is #11, Hawaii.
Anime communities seem so dead in Lemmy. There was finally an active thread last weekend, so I wanted to try to start another one this weekend.
