and relying mostly on Kbin's existing code as its base
This one most certainly not. We actually stopped porting kbin code a few months into the project, because it just was too much work and it was obvious that Ernest didn't want us to. So everything which changed on mbin in the about 8-10 months since, was purely our own work. Of course the basis will always be kbin, but the form will most likely change
We've been keeping the UI mostly as is, because we all like it, however on the backend site of it a lot has changed. The biggest problems kbin had were compatibility wise (federation) and scaling wise. These were the points where we made huge changes. The federation compatibility has improved a lot (yes there is still a lot to do) and scaling/performance has also improved a ton.
The biggest UI changes we made are:
new filter designs that work for threads as well as microblogs
a subscription panel
a usable instance wide modlog
a cake day display
and more stuff that I am forgetting at the moment (it's been a while since I looked at kbin and I am mostly a backend dev)
The backend changes we improved are (imo) more impactful:
(next release) direct messages are federating
(next release) pins federate
deleting users federate
magazine descriptions are federating correctly
mods federate
reports federate
incoming likes are working
the "hot" sort actually makes sense with lemmy content because it also looks at upvotes and not just at boosts
completely redone the hashtag system so it scales at all
completely redone the background worker system so it scales better (partly next release)
And these are only the changes I could think of in 5 minutes. We likely changed a lot more things, which I just forgot.
Also, even with the owl stuff, there's political crossover, where I get a bit angrier about loopholes in laws that destroy ecosystems and inaction to saving endangered animals.
That kind of politics is very likely to be nearly universally agreed with on an owl community... at least I think, so you're probably safe.
I usually won't stalk profiles, I really only do to check "are you for real or are you just trolling", and now what with the Fediverse being a new thing I'll sometimes check on people to see if they stopped commenting too.
I'm a bit oversensitive and politics gets a lot of engagement, naturally, and there are so many politics magazines or magazines that aren't strictly politics but will post a political meme or about where inflammatory politics intersects with their usually non-political point of interest, and that's so so so many to filter out that I just don't trust I can look at All on my instance without seeing something enraging or "look how awful the world is today!" when I already know about that thing and don't want to spend my time getting worked up over it yet again. I know it means I lose out on fun interactions like the ones you have, though, and that's a tradeoff I take, especially since I supplement by subbing to /m/[email protected], and either that or Fedigrow has the active communities thread. I also used https://sub.rehab/ when first coming here from Reddit to replace all the subreddits I enjoyed, so I tried to hit all my interests I would be remotely interested in talking about online.
Yeah, given the games are visual novels and usually don't have much gameplay besides that (there are stat raisers like the Tokimeki Memorial series, I'm not really personally interested in Anchored Hearts but am aware of it because it is supposed to have some gameplay beyond just usual visual novel making choices, Boyfriend Dungeon is hack-and-slash) they put a lot into story or characters in order to keep it engaging. As someone who started with more traditional gaming before I found otome games, I would love to see more otome that also includes more traditional gaming. Some of the otome isekai genre things I consumed (more detailed explanation of what otome isekai is here, but in short the name should tell it all: girl/woman isekais into an otome game) feature otome that also is a real RPG with levels and everything (off the top of my head, Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord, Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte, definitely have the game in the story be an RPG otome, and I don't recall what kind of genre The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior was but the title should tell you it definitely wasn't just a visual novel) which, if it isn't another misunderstanding of otome or artistic license being taken, implies that such games exist in Japan and just went unlocalized. But most otome are just straight up visual novels, so you have to sell them to us on the story, characters, and art only. Sometimes the music is really cool, but you don't really sell an otome on its music. Even if it's Band Camp Boyfriend. It's pretty cool. I've seen that some men play otome for the story and/or the romance and I definitely welcome that and them.
Curious what anime you like, and if you've joined any anime communities on the Fediverse. Or on Mastodon. Thinking of finally trying Mastodon after a year being on Lemmy and Kbin only. (I know my account age has me starting in September, but I instance-hopped.) I think I remember people on Fedigrow talking about anime communities they set up.
Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love Fedora Atomic (Silverblue, Bazzite, Kinoite, Aurora, IOT, etc.), more than any other distro I used, and I plant to continue using it....
I first joined Lemmy back during the big Reddit exodus of last year. I like many others wanted an alternative to Reddit, and I thought that this might’ve been the one. I made two accounts, one on lemmy.world and another on sh.itjust.works, in the June of last year that I used on and off for about 4 months....
After a year online the free speech-focused instance ‘Burggit’ is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...
Same with kbin.earth. Unfortunately, one problem with the fediverse is that everything (users, magazines, posts, comments, etc.) is tied to the instance's domain, so it can't really be changed at all.
Was super invested in it (was considering moderating multiple magazines), as I really like Kbin and the vision of it being an all-in-one microblogging and link aggregator platform in the Fediverse. With there being so many federated platforms serving the same purpose, I like how Kbin sort of went against the fragmentation. Had to leave it for Lemmy just the other day as well. I think that Ernest has created the best alternative to Reddit despite the struggles he’s faced with development and maintaining the instance alongside with personal issues.
mbin looks great but I think I’ll just stay with the more stable option and community…being an early adopter was fun for a year though. I’m still a little iffy about mbin personally. If there’s a mbin/kbin API release I may reconsider.
I’m having to register to Lemmy directly now, when I’m used to posting from KBin’s instance. But now the errors is getting so bothersome that I can’t even surf around currently on it. The 50x error comes up after everytime I post somewhere, like make a thread....
It won't show any posts if you're joining from a remote instance 'cos MBin returns empty outboxes for their magazines, but there's only one post there atm anyways.
Lemmy will probably error when clicking that link, so just wait a bit and refresh.
So this comment has one link, and two paragraphs about how it might not work as expected, but - other than that - yay Fediverse!, I guess, ha ha.
kbin (at least kbin.social) has a nice little community, but we're holding on by a thread over there since we've been overrun with spammers and nothing is really being done to combat it. A good chunk of people have jumped ship because of it, but we're still trying to fight where we can.
I made an mbin alt, but I haven't really hung out enough here to get a proper feel of it. Honestly it feels like looking through a window to the rest of the fediverse. If there's any chill mbin (edit) instances magazines, I'd love to know!
Beehaw seems to have the most positive vibes, and I really like that. It seems small, but they're pretty active. I mainly enjoy their gaming community.
I think I interact the most with Lemmy, but that's probably because that's where most active instances are. You'll get a lot more different takes on there than anywhere else, some great, some not so great, but that comes with any site where you bring a bunch of people together.
Of course, these are from my experience and opinion. I'm interested to see others' takes.
"If it were possible to construct huge gasometers and to draw together and compress within them the whole of the atmosphere, it would have been done long ago, and we should have been compelled to work for them in order to get money to buy air to breathe. And if that seemingly impossible thing were accomplished tomorrow, you would see thousands of people dying for want of air - or of the money to buy it - even as now thousands are dying for want of the other necessities of life. You would see people going about gasping for breath, and telling each other that the likes of them could not expect to have air to breathe unless the had the money to pay for it. Most of you here, for instance, would think and say so. Even as you think at present that it’s right for so few people to own the Earth, the Minerals and the Water, which are all just as necessary as is the air. In exactly the same spirit as you now say: “It’s Their Land,” “It’s Their Water,” “It’s Their Coal,” “It’s Their Iron,” so you would say “It’s Their Air,” “These are their gasometers, and what right have the likes of us to expect them to allow us to breathe for nothing?” And even while he is doing this the air monopolist will be preaching sermons on the Brotherhood of Man; he will be dispensing advice on “Christian Duty” in the Sunday magazines; he will give utterance to numerous more or less moral maxims for the guidance of the young. And meantime, all around, people will be dying for want of some of the air that he will have bottled up in his gasometers. And when you are all dragging out a miserable existence, gasping for breath or dying for want of air, if one of your number suggests smashing a hole in the side of one of the gasometers, you will all fall upon him in the name of law and order, and after doing your best to tear him limb from limb, you’ll drag him, covered with blood, in triumph to the nearest Police Station and deliver him up to “justice” in the hope of being given a few half-pounds of air for your trouble.”
I am trying to cut out Reddit from my life but I’m always ending up re-installing it because I simply don’t know what do with my time. We have two small kids (1y and 3y) so I can’t simply just read more, train more, play games, watch TV, etc....
Absolutely feel you. We have a 2.5 year old, she’s not in kindergarten yet, and what I get are micro breaks and I want to be like my husband who can just read Zelensky’s biography or a buddhist book for 5-15 minutes (his breaks are not as micro as mine) and have the concentration - or accept the lack thereof - to read. Sometimes he plays guitar with us in the room. Or does mini yoga sessions (like, 1 exercise for 2-3 minutes).
I, too, struggle without reddit in the microbreaks. Especially when breastfeeding because our girl kicks away books or magazines I basically only have my phone. What I can tell you is that lemmy got more instances so check out more communities and keep adding. It can help but yes it’s no reddit. Tbh I’ve been wanting to go back to reddit for ages, I just never get around to installing it again. I also check out a news app and read wikipedia articles. Did you know that giant deer were a thing and that Einstein was kind of an asshole in relationships? Light reading and you get into a draft where you end up with 100 tabs open to read that wait for you. This probably sounds whelp but it is really kinda addictive and fun, you can gain some knowledge and understanding or at least conversation topics.
Since you are probably not breastfeeding (I GUESS) try the magazine thing. Something light might do. There’s been a great family/parenting focused magazine in Germany but it has been discontinued.
I am also going to start trying to knit. My guess is that it won’t work because my toddler will take the needles and yarn the second she sees them but Idk how your kids are.
I’ve also been going to some playgroups and it’s always recommended to not cater to the kids and “just let them watch” or “integrate” or “play in parallel” to you doing stuff like household. I personally ask myself what kind of kids people have that this approach would work most of the time. But if this works for your family try filling the breaks with household stuff that maybe the kids can, as mentioned above, watch, join, or parallel play to. Clean a window, fix a hole in a shirt. Leaves you with less chores and tasks and if you’re lucky you can shut off your brain for a while. That’s the proclaimed ideal.
At the end of the day, lemmy isn’t reddit, and reddit kept us well entertained in these micro breaks. I absolutely feel you and I also don’t want to be a parent who pretends phones and media don’t exist or that I don’t use them. But I think we should have some stuff to do to fill the microbreaks with besides our phones. Like, man, I cannot give you any advice but we can brainstorm together if you want. Because I also want more enjoyable breaks, as well as spend less time looking at a screen in these - for my own health and for my child, she should see that I can fill my time not only with these screen induced dopamine kicks.
I used kbin for a while and now mbin for quite some time. I primarily use the desktop website but one thing I noticed from when I tested some Lemmy mobile clients is that I saw a lot more different lemmynsfw communities & consequently threads, like a lot more.
What I don't know is if this is just a case of this particular instance, or if it is just more noticeable because of the content. kbin was even worse and barely showed ANY content from that instance, mbin was significantly more when I switched, which surprised me. But if we compare for example (pulled from the instance's frontpage):
We get a 404 on mbin. You can repeat this for a lot of communities there with the same result. If you search for this or other "invisible" communities in the Magazine search, then they also don't show up there at all:
If this is the case with other instances then I feel there's potentially a lot of active communities & threads that we aren't even aware of, but also potentially more fringe instances & communities.
On both you have to search for a magazine handle ([email protected]) if the magazine is not yet on the server. And not the magazine search but the regular search. It can of course be blocked by the instance, but most likely just nobody searched for it before.
Most mbin instances are very small and even fedia only has like 4000 total users... Therefore not that many magazines/communities have been pulled in, yet...
I know the real answer is reddit but I really don’t want to go back now that I’ve already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn’t. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has...
Regarding the prefacing; it probably won't even work because people will read it as a "I'm not racist, but" kind of statement.
Regarding the problem you're stating; I've quickly after joining installed a tampermonkey script which allows me to hover over the name of an instance, magazine or user and display a small context menu where I can block them. Blocking certain magazines made all the difference for me.
I love the original patientgamers subreddit so I was stoked to find this community. And because lemmy seems to have a more knowledgeable crowd any topic I posted here had great engagement and discussions, despite the small community. I am too busy to be a mod but maybe I can help by sparking this discussion: what would be needed...
I‘m on another patient gamers sub, and the games sub on lemmy.world.
Heh, fair enough.
I had no idea about the ones you mentioned lol
If you hit lemmyverse.net, they’ve got a “search all instances by communities by name” feature, which I think is probably currently the most-realistic way to find communities across all of the Threadiverse.
Note that their kbin indexing isn’t great – you need to explicitly choose “kbin magazines” from the upper-right hamburger menu; it doesn’t combine kbin and lemmy results. And they don’t currently index at least kbin.social, which is the largest kbin instance.
Colorado’s Democratic-controlled House on Sunday passed a bill that would ban the sale and transfer of semiautomatic firearms, a major step for the legislation after roughly the same bill was swiftly killed by Democrats last year....
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. We basically agreed, except for I advocated for handing magazines and rounds back into the range and you didn’t think I did.
While I agree that safety is more important than hobbies and if they cannot coexist, I would choose safety; however I believe in this instance that they can
That depends on things we don’t know yet. If it can be brute forced (throw loads of computation power, gazillions of try & error, petabytes of data including human opinions), then yes, “lots of work” can be an equivalent.
If it does not, we have a mystery to solve. Where does this magic come from? It cannot be broken down into data and algorithms, but still emerges in the material world? How? And what is it, if not dependent on knowledge stored in matter?
On the other hand, how do humans come up with good, meaningful art? Talent Practice. Isn’t that just another equivalent of “lots of work”? This magic depends on many learned data points and acquired algorithms, executed by human brains.
There also is survivor bias. Millions of people practice art, but only a tiny fraction is recognized as artists (if you ask the magazines and wallets). Would we apply the same measure to computer generated art, or would we expect them to shine in every instance?
As “good, meaningful art” still lacks a good, meaningful definition, I can see humans moving the goalpost as technology progresses, so that it always remains a human domain. We just like to feel special and have a hard time accepting humiliations like being pushed out of the center of the solar system, or placed on one random planet among billion others, or being just one of many animal species.
Or maybe we are unique in this case. We’ll probably be wiser in a few decades.
I remember seeing an interview with the model, who at the time of the interview was in her 70s or 80s, she apparently wasn’t enthusiastic about having become a common test image. But since she had technically consented to be in Playboy (which was only a magazine at the time), there wasn’t anything she could do to stop it. I think in this case it’s probably best to stop using her image specifically, as it does kinda get into a weird messy situation of consent, and how her consent to be in a magazine morphed through technology into something more “permanent” than she originally realized. There are plenty of other models who would absolutely be down for that, and given enough time, knowing how nerds are, there will be other test images of women. But I think it’s probably for the best that this one gets retired from this use.
And yes, there are people who have tried to use this instance as a “there shouldn’t be images of attractive/implied nude women a standard test images, because it can cause body image issues for women who go into that field.” Which on one hand, I can see where they’re coming from, but also people take pictures of people, and some people do look better than most of us, having more diverse test images would be a good thing, because we don’t all look like that. But some do, and they’re probably going to get more pictures taken of them than the rest if us.
I’m reminded every year on my Facebook memories of this fact when I posted the Donald Trump Oprah interview where he said he’d run as a Republican because they’re the dumbest voters and we had a long conversation about it in my feed, and the video is removed. And every instance of it is gone. And snopes has a fake fact check on it, claiming it was from a magazine and was false. And people have discussions about it being a Mandela effect thing.
Except we quote it in our conversations on my old Facebook post.
The internet is not a bastion of unfettered memory that cannot be manipulated. That whole thing shattered that illusion for me.
By a variety of measures and in a variety of countries, the members of Generation Z (born in and after 1996) are suffering from anxiety, depression, self-harm, and related disorders at levels higher than any other generation for which we have data.
Ok, I admit my last reply was a little scattered because I wrote it over the course of half a day, so I’m going to attempt to deescalate things and do a better job of explaining my perspective without getting so lost in the weeds.
Feel free to disagree with me on this point but it sounds to me like we have a misunderstanding about what atypical sensory processing is. Atypical sensory processing is a symptom of autism and may be associated with ADHD, but they are not types, or examples of, atypical sensory processing. Atypical sensory processing is it’s own stand alone issue and is not always related to ADHD. Furthermore, it’s just one part of the spectrum of issues that need to be identified for a formal autism diagnosis, which is why I was adamant that insisting that one must mean the other is present, in my opinion, is inappropriate and misleading.
I would also like to argue that using the proper terminology is important in making sure that data isn’t misunderstood. I feel that it’s just fine to note what the studies findings are, which is that screentime can be damaging to young minds, without evoking ADHD and autism unnecessarily.
I do want to apologize for making an unnecessary call to authority and I can see how that may have come off douchey. The point I was attempting to make by doing that is that researchers can’t always be trusted not to put their thumbs on the scales in their research summaries knowing that people will jump on certain buzz words and run with it to make their study get more clicks. I know because that’s happened with studies I’ve been a part of (again, I realize you have no reason to believe me. Just explaining what I was attempting to convey.) Thankfully, they have to be more careful with the actual data documentation, but even then depending on the publication there’s wiggle room. Because of this fact, I think it’s important that we read less into these types of studies and not more. That’s why I suggested that even though autism is mentioned in the summary, I don’t feel it’s presence represents a direct relationship because the study data itself does not support this association. The summary even says so. I think the only reason the word is included is to encourage articles like the one you originally posted to make unverifiable claims for them.
Finally, I brought up the Wakefield thing because despite being discredited years ago, millions of people still believe that there’s a connection between vaccines and autism because of the fact that pop science magazines don’t get fact-checked the same way clinical research journals do. They can say a study says whatever they want, whether it does or not, and 99% of people are only going to read the headline and assume it’s the truth without looking any deeper.
I understand that in this particular instance, no one is being physically harmed because of what I see as a false equivalence, but I do think it can be harmful if someone were to read this article and then look down on a parent of an autistic child because they think they got that way from sitting in front of too much television. That’s clearly not how autism works but you wouldn’t know that by reading this article.
I hope you have a better understanding of where I’m coming from and for what it’s worth, I wish you well in life.
Gaming - too much hassle for me, and I just wasn’t even using my PS4 much. I don’t know if I’d call it outgrowing it exactly though… this one is borderline to me.
What I have outgrown is cable news like CNN etc. Or they went way to clickbait for me. Maybe both happened. Similar with the NYT, they keep getting things wrong that they just shouldn’t and then the more history I read the less I really trust their reporting. The more boring the news source, like AP, the more likely it is to be accurate from what I can tell.
Similar things happened with certain influencers / podcasters. As I learned more I just found they were continually making the same mistakes on things that they should have known better / learned better by now. Sam Harris was a big one, and I narrowly avoided the beginnings of Brett Weinsteins Dark Horse and now it’s completely off the rails.
Certain “nonfiction” authors followed the same path - as I got older I realized how made up the Ancient Aliens thing was, I think I bought in hard in my late teen years and then when I was 25 I had an epiphany that it just has to be crap or more people would believe it, and when I re looked at the “evidence” I was like - oh, well if you just go by the book, sure it sounds compelling - but if you search alternative explanations all of a sudden you’re like, oh yea, that is far more plausible.
Consumer Reports happened about a decade ago. The reason was I always was a little annoyed by their biases that they didn’t really make clear. What really killed it for me though was comparing laptops primarily on screen size. Looking back now, it’s a little less ridiculous than I initially thought, but to not have separate Mac and Windows categories let to the Mac winning over the windows competitor when the Mac was like 3x the price. This all seemed like a crazy result to anyone who knew anything about computers, especially like in 2014 when for something like 95% of the population, the Mac would not run 99% of the software they could possibly want to run, or know about. A great build quality, performance and size doesn’t matter if the computer doesn’t do the computation you need.
In the last 3 years non anime TV shows - mostly because of a mix of already been done better, no FOMO with streaming, and because of all the channels etc no water cooler talk about the 3 shows that were on last night / this week / whatever dragging me to be up to date. Now that there’s so many choices, I don’t have to take “mildly entertaining” as my bar for watching a show, it’s way way higher now. And as the individual shows get longer on streaming for many - it’s harder to set aside 55-90 minutes depending on show. Even 42 minutes is harder as more is going on now for me. I think the only reason I do more Anime is it’s ~20 minute chunks, and I have less experience with it (for half my life I didn’t know it existed, and for the next quarter it was kind of hard to come by) so I am just starting to get more picky about the shows and the “this was done better before”. Konosuba for instance is IMHO a worse version of Slayers series in a lot of ways.
Magazines - I just got tired of both trying to keep up, the rising costs, and then the increase in ads so there was so little there there, along with what to do when I was done with the weeks / months issue? I get a lot of that kind of content now from online anyway.
Physical books - similar. Unless I want to get a collectors edition for the object, the content is much better as an e-book IMO, cheaper, less paper waste, less piles of stuff taking up space etc. I’ve really come back around on the novel contents though - lots of bang for you buck in time vs dollar spent, way more variety in stories than ever get made into TV shows, can be stored locally easily on the device so you’re not burning data like with streaming… Easy to keep place with a decent app, easy to read for 3 minutes or 3 hours.
For example, if I (on kbin.run - which is Mbin, but for the purposes of this let's just assume it's Kbin) go to a random magazine on kbin.social, I will often see a prompt that the magazine may be incomplete and that I should visit the original instance for all the content....

Nice! I have been waiting for this, eagerly anticipating when I can block the entire hexbear instance (I made the mistake of commenting in one of their magazines once and despite how many days ago that was the sheer flood and content of the responses continues to be… let’s just say enlightening in terms of how they choose to exist). So this is fantastic! :-P
