Among some friends I seem to be the odd one out who doesn’t like heat and the sun. To me an overcast fall day, 10C is perfect. Rain is welcome if it does not overstay its welcome.
I forget that the rest of Office even exists, so yeah:-P.
it entice users to do things they shouldn’t do.
I feel like the same could be said of all 3 of those, but more importantly of any software package? Histograms for instance require some effort to make in Excel b/c there should be no spacing between the bars, also the built-in statistical packages have issues e.g. median iirc just picks one (or perhaps uses floor()?) rather than when there is an odd number use the average between the upper and lower valuation. An example using Powerpoint could be to use flashy animations that may work well in the boardroom, but have little place in science where the content should always have the sole focus. Even so, you can use Powerpoint to get the job done, and when used properly it works well?
Nothing in life is free & easy - everything requires effort, especially for it to be done well, b/c of entropy. Anything LaTeX, though I have never personally used Beamer, would do better for math formulas, but Office is an option, that many people around the world choose daily.
Reddit is declining in a way liberals can’t deny. The more ideological among these liberals attempt to leave, but without theory, without knowledge of Marxism, or even Anarchism, without a firm understanding of Historical and Dialectical Materialism, their world view is framed in a manner that casts Capitalism as bad, in an almost Ultraleftist manner, but Red Scare propaganda still makes Marxism spooky.
They occupy a space that considers Capitalist countries with pure nuance and critical support, but only judge leftist movements as though they are Ultras, and nothing is satisfactory.
From there, Liberals seek a replacement, and further still they don’t quite accept federation, so they go to the largest generalist instance. This is Lemmy.world, so they get to have a space filled with ex-redditors kicked out by Capitalism’s failings, but unwilling to embrace any actual alternative, occupying a weird middle ground.
Therefore, Lemmy.world appeals to radical, theoryless liberals, with no specific or niche interests, and creates an echo-chamber around that specific anti-specificity.
Just my 2 cents.
Dialectically, I believe eventually .world will defed from .ml, or vice-versa, from some unimportant inciting incident, creating a multi-polar Lemmy, so to speak, but that’s a bit odd to say directly to you. Either way, I see a contradiction that appears to be growing, so Dialectically there will likely be a shift from the quantitative to qualitative, so to speak.
Yeah its been a journey. My cakeday for the an account I made on ml would be about now, and I think its around a month till this account is officially a year old.
Its an odd time to be on a platform like lemmy.
We’re seeing an almost complete adulteration of what we might call the internet 2.0 era sites into walled gardens of exclusion. Effectively, the stealing, en-masse of almost two decades of user generated content. The walls and gates of the gardens we planted get higher everyday; the enshittification of all things.
And yet here we are. On a self-hosted, federated, unbought, unbroken, and unbent platform. Obviously its not all roses, but for what its worth, both the users and developers have created something incredibly special: A ray of hope in a time where it seems like the world has only been changing for the worse. And while the instances have their differencs, we should be looking to embrace those differences as much as possible, because this is what truly gives the fediverse strength. If its Kbin or Lemmy or Mastadon; or .ml or .world or .blahaj.zone.
The point of the fediverse isn’t consolidation or control, but distribution and access. There is so much more possible simply because enough of us were willing to make the journey over here. We’re providing the future with an alternative that isn’t tracking them, trying to manipulate them with an algorithm, or to turn them into commodities. There is power in that.
So happy cakeday. Happy cake season to those who were messing around with a browser plug-in about this time last year, trying to delete their reddit history. Happy cakeday to the developers, to those who post, and to the commenters. And most of all, happy cake day to you dear lemming reading this. You make this place happen.

Oh wow so this “impact engineering” methodology seems like it could be interesting, let me just look it up.
Hmm.
Odd the only results are this article and articles like it based on a press release for a book that is seemingly the only source of any information on this methodology.
Oh <insert Willem Defoe tapping forehand meme> it was click bait all along.
If they were interested in my location they could request location data. What are the odds they are doing this to directly market products to people based on health data?...
You get laid off… and then one of your connections from the last 15 roles has an open position that you fit in.
alternatively: you as 50something tech worker who has only had one gig for 15 years gets canned for whatever reason goes to the streets and every single employer who interviews you sees just how out of date you are with technology because you haven’t learned anything new in forever. You end up working at an arcade until eventually taking a huge pay cut becoming tech support or working for a low paying company nobody with experience wants to work for.
I have never seen a good worker who moves on not do exceptionally well in a year or two years. Maybe one role or two will be awful for a 20k raise so you stay a year… then the next role gives you ANOTHER 20k raise (so +40k now in just one year) and the new role is phenomenal. Two or three more years you find another role for another 10-20k and then 50k in equity that matures in x years to try and keep you. Odds are by then you have multiple offers to pick from because past managers/companies are interested in you. Maybe now you’re going back to a former company but into a more senior role because of all that modern experience you’ve gained.
As long as you get minimum 1 year in most roles, and do not have significant gaps, you’re gonna be desired. I will as a hiring manager 100% of the time be more interested in the resume of a guy who has been at 5 roles in 10 years for 1yr+ each, than one guy who has been in one role for ten years.
It’s a separate part of the company. The parts are similar but not made to be luxurious and some are just completely different things that aren’t luxury at all. I wrote the initial comment without the military part added, but I edited it to add that so I guess it kinda reads a little odd now.
I don’t think there are many companies at all that do what we do so I’m being kinda vague lol
I’m on KDE. It’s quite an odd problem. If I keep them both set to refresh rates below their max, things work fine. However, if both monitors are set to their native refresh rates, the higher refresh rate one goes blank and the lower one starts flickering. If I disable the lower refresh rate monitor, I can set the higher one to it’s max without issue though.
Essentially, when I’m booting into Bazzite, I need to either disable my second monitor or halve my refresh rate or it’s unusable.

I’m moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don’t see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...
There’s a lot of discussion in here about how great this is. And it is. But it is at odds with another environmentalist concern.
What if we could take carbon dioxide and turn it into something that can’t be degraded by living organisms? Well, plastic is one of those things, or was. Plastic is a form of carbon sequestration.
These micro organisms, they’re turning plastic into carbon dioxide. Any and all carbon compounds on earth will enter the carbon cycle. every drop of oil pulled out of the ground, even the stuff that’s used to make plastic, will wind up in the atmosphere.
Depends on your scientific familiarity. Also, part of the turbo encabulator script is that most of the words are not odd, it’s how they’re joined which is odd.
They’ve already done a live action adaptation of the original game back in 2006. It was a bit… odd, and definitely not the way you’d wanna experience the yakuza 1 story for the first time, but it is an entertaining enough shitshow of a time for people that just want more yakuza.
(Also the entire thing is on YouTube but don’t tell Sega that)
Apple’s skeuomorphic phase overlapped the Retina display era, though, so I don’t buy that explanation. Also, it’s nothing to do with raster vs. vector. The photos that we take with phone cameras are raster graphics, for example. They look great, and it’s because they’re high-resolution. High-res raster UI elements would look great, except then the versatile manipulation by CSS would not be possible. Vector graphics are very good at that.
But here’s the thing: Complex vector graphics exist, too. There were some pretty fancy PostScript graphics even back in the early 1990’s. With all the pixels that we have now, we could have good design instead of flat, if the developers bothered. But it seems we’ve internalized the feeling that we’re not worth the effort, aesthetics and color aren’t interesting, and life is a joyless slog. Which sounds and awful lot like clinical depression…
(Incidentally, odd that emoji aren’t flat design.)
(Incidentally, odd that emoji aren’t flat design.)
That actually depends on browser, app or OS that’s doing the render. Apple and Whatsapp use the same design, Android uses a slightly different one, Discord and Microsoft both use flat designs, but for Win11 it’s a different set
IIUC it wouldn’t be able to be automatically started then, right? I mean I guess you could drag it to startup but it would need the password to start. From a security minded perspective that’s good, but from a user perspective kind of sucks. I already unlocked the computer: as a user id just want it to ‘work’.
There is always a tug of war between best level of security and user experience. I guess the best security is to get rid of the human element though… so eh.
Always forced to foreground makes it even less convenient and kind of odd. I dig the status tray control though. I don’t see this functionality as being useful if you have to remember to turn it on. If I remember what I was doing enough to turn it on, I’d write down what I’d forget. To me it’s about allowing the user to pick their comfort level.
I figure the cryptfs could be a bitlocker volume with a different key than the base C drives key to get similar protection. In theory it could also be based on the C drives bitlocker for a less secure, but still hardware level secured middle ground. Id have to think about it more.
The other stuff mentioned is basically what it does locally in terms of OCR and recognition… just with proprietary local recipes.

that’s true, but since this is a record of everything you’ve ever done, i feel this is the irreducible minimum for security. a separate password prompt would signal to the less technically-minded users that this is Serious
Always forced to foreground makes it even less convenient and kind of odd.
this is a design pattern i borrowed from Linux (my OS of choice). modern Linux apps require your explicit permission to run in the background, so most of them don’t even bother with running in the background at all. that said, i suppose it can run in the background, as long as the status indicator is sufficiently noticeable, but you’d have to go into the settings and flip that switch yourself
I don’t see this functionality as being useful if you have to remember to turn it on.
i imagine that it would become a habit, or you’d set it to run on startup. my use case would be turning it on for specific tasks like research or shopping, where you might only later remember that that one thing you saw was actually really valuable

There was a shawarma place I used to go to that had an interesting “garlic sauce”. You couldn’t call it toum, as it was either not whipped with oil or they stopped after adding a splash. It had the appearance of being just very finely chopped garlic, like somebody ran it through a food processor until it was almost a paste. And fuck, it was so good on their donair pizzas. We used to get a small tub to go with it, but after a slice of the pizza, a sip of beer would set your tongue on fire. And the next morning, shaving would make the bathroom smell like fresh garlic. Definitely too much, but oddly worthwhile from time to time.
To be fair it’s rather odd they call it that. Germans seem rather strange with English in general.
They go to public viewings to watch on their beamers. Even when no one has died. Lothar Matthäus claims “I’m a German record player”. They carry stuff around in their body bags and listen to music from “boxen”.
Merkel even told the english press about her shitstorm. Every day there is a cringe moment.
Lol, who exactly am I attacking? I’m just stating it’s odd that you think you know more about homophobia than a queer author.
Argumentum ad populum.
Only because you haven’t stated your interpretation, what else is there to judge? A claim made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
Straight men hanging out with each other is labelled as “pretty gay.” This is irrational because straight men can hang out with each other without being gay.
You’re purposely conflating what the author wrote, and misquoting them. Not exactly academically honest.
The quote was that “All Male Monday” sounds pretty gay. Which it does. That’s not homophobic, in fact it would be pretty rad if the context was at an lgbtq bar, and not a gathering of bigots.
Why do you instinctually believe All Male Monday has an inherent negative connotation?
Never said not suggested this. I think they’re idiots. Just like the author of this piece and the tweet, and the editors for allowing it. Multiple times youve falsely out words in my mouth
You have, by ignoring the purpose of the article and just interpreting statements taken out of context. You have also stated it’s gay people’s fault for driving men away from affection from other men.
“An all-male Monday sounds pretty gay to me.”
Yes, if someone advertised for a bar with “All Male Mondays”, It would be easy to assume it’s a gay bar. That by no means implies males hanging out makes you gay. Nor does it imply that being gay is bad, which would be homophobic.
What does context have to do with this? , when my level of homophobia has no bearing on the content of my argument.
What does context have to do with any arguments…? Every argument requires context so you can’t just misinterpret a piece of a body of work.
You tried to attack me, by calling me homophobic
No, your argument implies you are homophobic. Being called gay is not homophobic unless the person calling you gay is doing so as an insult. You are implying that being gay is inherently insulting.
In the context of the article, the writer would have to believe their own sexuality is inherently insulting.
when my level of homophobia has no bearing on the content of my argument.
Well at least we agree that you are homophobic, just apparently not at what level?
And yes, personal biases are important to determining the logical framework of an argument.
