Thanks to a video posted by Reddit user OkPain2022, we're given a glimpse of how pickpocketing will work. Of course, you'll still need to approach them by crouching, and after you do that, a prompt will appear, allowing you to steal from them. After that, another menu will appear, showing you what they have and the odds of you...
I can’t seem to find any. If some do exist, please link them. I prefer low profile keyboards, so it would feel odd to have a full profile numpad next to my TKL whenever I need to use it.
If you’re not familiar, every month the main publisher of Trek fiction, Simon & Schuster puts out an offering of more than a half dozen ebooks for $ 0.99 in Canada and the US and at a similar low price in some other countries....
Those “Dominion War” 2-parters are odd - the TNG books are an original story, but the DS9 ones are adaptations of “Call to Arms” and “Sacrifice of Angels”.
Mastodon, an alternative social network to Twitter, has a serious problem with child sexual abuse material according to researchers from Stanford University. In just two days, researchers found over 100 instances of known CSAM across over 325,000 posts on Mastodon. The researchers found hundreds of posts containing CSAM related...
So instances that are actually supporting CSAM material can and should be dealt with by law enforcement. That much is simple (and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done with certain … instances, to be honest). But I think the apparently less clearly solved issues have known and working solutions that apply to other parts of the web as well. No content moderation is perfect, but in general, if admins are acting in good faith, I don’t think there should be too much of a problem:
For when federation inadvertently spreads some of the material through to other instances’ databases: Isn’t this the same situation as when ISP’s used to cache web traffic to save on bandwidth costs? In that situation, too, browsed web pages would end up in the ISP’s cache which could then harbour whatever material the user was looking at. As I recall, the ISP would just ban CSAM and other illegal material in their terms of service, and remove anyone reported as violating the rule, and that sufficed.
As for “bad” instances/users: It’s impossible to block all instances and all users that might disseminate this material as you’d have to go to a “block everything, then allow known entities” rule which would break the Fediverse model. Again, users or site admins found to be acting in bad faith should be blocked and reported (either automatically or manually). Some may slip through the net, but as long as admins are seen to be doing the best they can, that should be enough.
There seem to be concerns about “surveillance” of material on Mastodon, which strikes me as a bit odd. Mastodon isn’t a private platform. People who want private messaging should use an E2EE messaging app like Signal, not a social networking platform like Mastodon (or Twitter, Threads etc.). Mastodon data is already public and is likely already being surveilled, and will be so regardless of what anyone involved with the network wants, because there’s no access control on it anyway. Having Mastodon itself contain code to keep the network clean, even if it only applies to part of the network, just allows those Mastodon admins who are running that part of the code to take some of the responsibility on themselves for doing so, reducing the temptation for third parties to do it for them.
Can we discuss how it’s possible that the paid model (gpt4) got worse and the free one (gpt3.5) got better? Is it because the free one is being trained on a larger pool of users or what?
I’m glad I’m old enough that I remember much more seasonally appropriate weather, if nothing else. It was really snowy in December when I was a kid in the 1980s and I think I only saw one green Christmas that whole time, while green Christmas is just normal now. We also didn’t have air conditioning until I was in my teens, because Canada had cooler summers, and for the odd hot night you’d just sleep in the basement. Eventually we moved to a house that had central air, but I don’t remember needing it the way we have the last 20 years.
I don’t have air conditioning now, but it hasn’t been a bad summer in Ontario so far heat wise, somehow we’re missing the big heat waves everyone else is getting. I’m lucky I get a lot of tree shade.
It seems odd putting meat in the same category as bread.
In terms of pure health, there’s not much out there better than most meats. Yes, beef is a bit lower than pork and chicken, but properly portioned (looking at most of us Americans) it has very few downsides.
Bread on the other hand can be one of the worst foods we can eat. Of course, it is still all about moderation.
EDIT: Why the reddit-like downvotes folks? There’s really no cohesive argument that puts meat below bread healthwise in most situations. If you want to avoid meat, avoid meat. If you want to be morally opposed to anyone eating meat, so be it. Facts are still facts and misinformation isn’t the right way to fight that battle.
To be fair, I made that same mistake when I read the wording and saw “too… young,” I did a double-take and was like, waitaminute, what are we saying here, before I realized they were referring to adults looking too young. I get they’re trying to be inclusive, it just looks odd out of context.
But that instance really has very little of substance or value going by their communities.
So if you don’t mind my asking, what is this all about?
As far as I understand, it is an instance dedicated to creating a safe space for gender diverse people. I don’t think you’re the only one critiquing the value of the instance at a general level here either. From what I’ve seen there’s a good amount of gender diverse people talking about their own situations with each other there as well as their own meme-ing and shitposting. What’s wrong with that?
Given that I’ve not seen anyone else critique a whole instance (which is odd to say in a thread about a NSFW instance maybe not doing enough to prevent CSAM) … I must be missing something because otherwise it’s hard not to see this as some form of trans/queer phobia.
For the most part it’s borderline child porn or stable diffusion spam. There should be an option to opt out of content from specific instances on account level.
That’s odd, maybe your instance fixed it. I have accounts on two Lemmy instances. I just logged myself into those instances and they both ignored the fact that I have it set to Subscribed. Not to All.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have their All be memes, and even still some memes I just don’t feel like seeing, or whose point are “lol thing bad.” Even if I agree with you that Thing is Bad I don’t want to see it.
People thinking Elon isnt playing some sort of long game need to ask themselves one question. “If he is just acting like a bored edgelord with too much money. What are the odds that every last decision would be detrimental to the platform?”
Surely, even if by accident. He would make one good decision.
if youre unfamiliar, its an accessibility app made by google, for controlling your phone with your voice. this is different to the “OK google” thing....
I swear, google’s quality control on the pixels is just bad. I had a Pixel 5a, when I got it, the phone was a year old. Out of the box it was slow, I tried so many things to get it working correctly and it just never did. Then 7 months in it just died.
After a ton of back and forth with support and them trying to tell me I had water damage when I didn’t, I finally got another Pixel 5a. That one works super well in comparison. I didn’t use it much because I was so fed up with the whole debacle with Google that I switched to an Asus Zenfone 9. But the little I did use it, it was faster than the other 5a ever was.
My first pixel 5a almost never picked up my "ok Google"s whereas my Asus Zenfone 9 works while it’s playing music full volume, or while I’m playing music in the car, and a ton of other situations where my pixel and my galaxy s9 I had before never did. It’s so odd.
That being said, the Zenfone is way worse at shazaming things for some reason. I definitely think it’s not only a per phone model basis but also a per singular phone basis thing.
Of course it’s odd. Most people don’t see those “two steps back” (white bankers) as connected to the “one step forward” (credit scores from white bankers) because of this gap.
No it’s odd because of the time period between them.
The fact you think it is “white bankers” who created credit scores rather than algorithms created by mathematicians, finance experts, and economists speaks volumes as to how poorly educated you are on this topic.
My grasp of history is odd because these two events were decades apart? Why do you think this duration is important?
I haven’t stated (and it doesn’t matter) who originally created credit scores. The authority figures to whom you’re appealing have also criticized credit scores for their racism. So I think it would be more constructive if we discussed the subject matter, rather than each other.
You are connecting two events that are unrelated and attempting to create a connection and that is an odd thing to do in history. The massacre in Tulsa has no direct impact on the creation of credit scores and it requires a massive amount of illogic to get there.
As for your attempts to find a logical flaw just stop now. You clearly do not understand what they are if you think I made an appeal to authority (I did not and could not since there was no source).
You however seem to think that a wikipedia article existing means the notions suggested are factual and that cannot be farther from the truth. Just because someone criticized credit scores does not make their claims valid or even informed.
Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...
My laptop has exactly one USB-C port. It’s on the back and it’s the one port that directly connects to the GPU so slightly better performance if I use that with my external monitor. The audio jack on the side is much more convenient to use. Strike 1.
It is honestly pretty rare for me to listen to something on my phone. The rare times I do use my headphones with my phone it’s because something took out my internet while I was in a voice chat and I just unplug the headset from my laptop and plug into my phone to take my friends with me on whatever adventure it takes to investigate. Strike 2.
I already have a perfectly good headset with 3.5mm. Getting a whole new headset or even an adapter just feels like extra added cost for no real gain. Strike 3.
Bonus round. I can plug a 3.5mm headset into my Nintendo Switch while it’s docked. Can’t do that with USB-C. It’s an odd thing to mention, but I have made use of that enough times to bring up.
Bonus bonus round. I have tried giving bluetooth a chance, but every time I’m massively let down. Initially things sound fine, then the moment I connect to a voice chat it’s like I’m listening through water or something. Maybe it’s the bluetooth headsets in my price range or maybe it’s just bluetooth not being good in general but I can’t work with that. I have a hard time with my hearing. I need people to be as clear as possible and I know for sure I get that with a wired headset.
WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that while Ukraine has reconquered half the territory that Russia initially seized in its invasion, Kyiv faced a “a very hard fight” to win back more....
Kinda odd that a US state official is talking about this in language implying it’s the US’s war? Removes the whole facade that this isn’t US+Ukraine vs Russia that everyone’s pretending isn’t happening.
The fact that this is upvoted so much is just sad.
While at face value it appears to be critical of AI, and thus bandwagoning on a very popular slant these days online, the inherent anthropomorphizing of the model in question is extremely wrong in so many ways.
LLMs are trained to complete human thought. And as a result, that very narrow class of machine learning ends up being oddly good at seeming human in responses.
But a diffusion model for generating images? Or text to voice generation?
To anthropomorphize these models is like saying that your cell tower triangulating your position won’t care about you as much as your mother would.
It’s just incredibly bizarre.
It is going to get better and better at replicating human speech patterns, and is going to be able to be further customized in how it expresses sounds mimicking human emotions. Already it can get uncannily good off just a few seconds of a sample.
As for the actors - as soon as residuals get figured out such that they get paid per hour of secondary usage of their recordings, they are going to go from “I’ll never deign to let AI replace me” to “yes, of course I’ll let you pay me more for me to do less work.”
The creativity of Matt Mercer in deciding on as frightened goblin voice for an innkeeper is going to be years before an AI successfully replaces that contribution.
But for Matt Mercer to provide samples of many different voices to an AI which pairs with GPT-5+ to DM your DnD campaigns with that voice pack for a monthly fee he gets a large cut from?
That’s not only going to be extremely possible sooner than you might think, but you’ll be seeing serious voice actors falling over themselves to directly market their voices to main street for personalized content.
It’s all about economical fairness, and those rigidly protesting change that endangers the status quo are very much like the MPAA fighting Napster instead of funding its successor - who as a result left a clear victory open to Apple and then Spotify and others by resisting change rather than embracing it.
