Unexpected GOOD news ☀️ about health, post-degree studies:
Not sure what has gone ‘right’, but these last 6 days I haven’t noticed many ME/CFS symptoms at all. This comes right after 2-3 weeks of the worst symptoms for literally years, and a long-term decline over the duration of my degree studies (4 years). So this is totally and utterly unexpected.
For the last 6 days, I’ve been planning carefully as usual, pacing (with approx 1 million back up plans 😜), but yesterday was a recent record: did 3 social events, one after another! What the flip?! Normally I’d do one small social event every 3-7 days, but even been avoiding them completely lately due to the massive and lasting impact. There was lots of familiarity with the people, places and events yesterday though, so not tonnes of novelty and all very easy going physically, and all the plans went like clockwork. Also there wasn’t a pressure to ‘perform’, socially, which is key. But, still! Massive, massive difference. I have a big ‘social hangover’ now (autistic side of me never knows what social mistakes I make, terrifying) which prevented me from sleeping properly, but I don’t feel dysregulated (physically) from that like I would be normally, just a bit of ‘normal’ tiredness.
My hypotheses:
I usually get sick (ME/CFS) for 2 weeks after the end of every term. This time it was closer to 3 weeks and the worst sickness for a long time. Maybe that extra time resting helped rest more deeply. I cancelled lots of even low-key activities during that time, but perhaps this was key.
I had a 6-month gap in my degree studies last year but I did NOT experience this improvement then. So I’m thinking maybe I’ve been released from all that subtle residual stress now my degree is done, and I’m actually feeling good instead of constantly anxious I’ve forgotten some studies. The hormones involved in feeling good may actually be doing more than just making good feelings (hormones always have loads of different roles in our bodies, and rarely, if ever just one!)
This one is a long shot: I got a mild respiratory virus last week and only have a runny nose left of it as it’s already gone except for that. I’ve been feeling better since the virus hit and started to lift … it makes so no sense. But ME/CFS has lots of impacts on the immune system (it’s thought to be a post-viral syndrome after all), maybe this virus distracted my immune system, or kicked other systems into gear that are usually offline. Who knows. The timing is odd, though.
—-
Whatever is behind this, I just hope it continues. I’m balancing ‘carpe diem’ to make the most of this precious healthy time with my experience over the last 14-15 years of ME/CFS, that it’s best to keep back up plans to hand at all times. These days feel like a massive gift. 💝
SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE MY MOMS PET CAT “AUTUMN” THAT SHE HAD IN THE 90S!!!
…I miss that cat. She was abused at some point before my mom found her on the side of the road. She was scared of everyone and everything. But once she trusted you, she was the sweetest sweetheart to ever sweetheart!
You either never saw her, because she was shivering in fear under a bed, or she was lovingly curled in your lap. There was no inbetween.
You couldn’t even pet her any way you wanted. It was slow pets. No sudden movements. No rough pets.
If you sneezed, or even scratched yourself in a way that spooked her, she’d dart out like a bat out hell, hide under a couch, or in a cabnet, and 5 minutes later she came back with a look on her face like “I’m sorry I ran. Can I come back into your lap?”
And you’d assure her it was ok, and she would very slowly, very carefully make her way into the chair, and then slowly cufl into a ball so the petting can commence.
Oddly enough, she never minded belly touches. As long as it was slow just like head pets, or back pets.
She was a BIG FAT CAT. But then you pick her up, and realize that yes, she has some belly, but even still 70% of her size was that color fur…but like 12 pounds of fur. I’m exaggerating a little bit, but not by much.
I miss Autumn so so much. So much personality in that cat.
Fewer than three weeks before actor Alec Baldwin is due to go on trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, prosecutors have said that he “engaged in horseplay with the revolver”, including firing a blank round at a crew member on the set of Rust before the tragic accident occurred....
i absolutely agree, my point is less that there are or are not health concerns, just that it is currently not a requirement, at least anywhere I have lived. i believe it should be, but I know that the south passing legislation that helps vulnerable people at the expense of those who own property is probably never going to happen. i just felt like it was odd that the article was stating that there is no law in the state, without emphasizing that most states do not either.
I wouldn’t know. My Google account is older than YouTube, and GMail was just getting out of the beta stage. Smartphones didn’t exist yet, nor did all these modern fancy apps.
So the signup process was totally different back then. And when they acquired YouTube, that meant I automatically had a YouTube account, but oddly enough I had to use a different username than my Google account, to avoid conflicts as they merged.
I only use Google services on the devices I leave at home, my mobile devices will never see the likes of Google though. They don’t have any business tracking all my activity, so as far as their systems know, I haven’t left home in over 3 years LOL!
Yeah I get the concept and all, I did have those pushpip candies the odd time. Same premise, I just thought someone took the icecream from the normal tubs/boxes, filled the liter toilet paper roll then refroze it. Didn’t suspect it was company mass produced things.
On my Job I regularly have to install Windows PCs and sometimes even install the USB Drivers for Mouse and Keyboard to work. Why dont I have to do that on Linux ever? Seems weird not to have them installed on Windows.
That’s odd. I can’t remember the last time I’ve installed USB drivers on Windows. It either works or it doesn’t (like a 75% chance of it working though).
what does our brain really think of these mimicry attempts?
There’s something stupid-sounding about this sentence, though I can’t quite pinpoint it.
Also, I wonder how they controlled for confounding factors. The research indicates that our brains react differently to “fake voices.” How does it react to real voices played with low quality audio (e.g. through a telephone, or AM radio)? What about natural voices that are “ugly” or odd sounding? Speech impediments? Voices in a big hall with lots of reverberation? What about fake voices in an environment with a lot of background noise?
I hope this isn’t perceived as advertising… I’m quite apprehensive about making this purchase and will absolutely update with my progress if/when the console arrives....
I don’t trust AliEx any more after I took the loss of 3 orders for ~$60 in 2020. When I called, they hung up on me at random every time. After the 3rd try I washed my hands and walked away. Stealing from me once is on them, twice would be my own fault. Prior to that experience I spent a few thousand dollars on the platform for odds and ends.
I expect something like this to be an emulator and nowhere near the quality of a real Nintendo product, but I could be wrong. I would buy used or a homebrew project that is well documented and might cost a little more.
Her Majesty’s Penitentiary inmate Devon Fitzpatrick says early one morning in mid-May he woke up and felt something moving in the crotch of his pants. When he reached in, he discovered a rat had given birth there.
Edited the original post but might aswell comment it. I switched to GNOME (Wayland) and the FPS issue seems to be gone there. I ran the game with only the command line arguments “gamemoderun %command%” in steam and it seems to work properly. Very odd issue.
One of my best friends in elementary school was a son of Turkish immigrants.
His parents didn’t speak any German, so naturally he had serious issues with the language, too.
This held him back in school, which lead to him getting sent to the lowest tier of secondary school.
(We have 3 tiers in Germany. The highest one (Gymnasium) qualifies you for university, the middle one (Realschule) used to qualify you for highly-skilled work that doesn’t require university, and the lowest one (Hauptschule) for the trades. Nowadays, even trades jobs scoff at the middle tier, and the lowest tier is basically a direct route to a life of shit jobs or unemployment.)
But just by hanging out with him as a friend, I taught him German, how to use and fix computers, showed him the world of books, and connected him to German society better. I’m not trying to brag, he was a very bright kid and it wasn’t like I was doing this as welfare, he was just a good friend and we shared what we liked with each other.
25 years later we met again by accident. He actually recognized me when he saw me on the street in a different city.
By then he had switched from Hauptschule to Realschule, went on to get his qualification for university, studied economics, created his own company in the IT sector, and had 6 employees. And he told me that my friendship was what kept him out of the wrong circles. On the old computer I had given him (which my parents had replaced) he had taught himself how to use office programs, so he was the only one in the family who could do the taxes, which taught him about finances.
At the time I met him again I was actually unemployed and working odd manual labor jobs under the table, after failing my university education twice due to depression.
He connected me to some contacts he had, which landed me an IT support job, and now I have a pretty good career as a sysadmin.
I advocate for two things, oddly things I never would have in earlier internet:
Paid forums. A one time payment for registration.
Strict rules and quick bans. But allow offenders to buy back in. Permaban for serious offenses. .
Why? Because if it costs you $10 or 15 to re-activate after screwing around, you’re much more likely to read the room and not fuck around too much with others. It encourages users to point out bad behavior, and mods to act decisively. If the mods or management totally suck, then it can go sour, but that’s true of any community.
In this case though it can at least partially help to offset costs from shitty users, and keep bots at bay by making them cost a registration fee.
I don’t love it as a “solution”, but when Facebook was small, people behaved better. But now people post the most unhinged shit ever under their full legal name, so no amount of daylight is going to put the proverbial trolls back in their cages. Just gotta lock them out of civil spaces.
You wanna talk about Honda engine tuning here with us? Don’t be a fucking asshole, or get banned.
You wanna chat with fans of 50s cinema and the rise of modern camera film technique? Do it without brining up woke/trump/biden/Covid or get out.
I like that we have free stuff like lemmy and reddit for now, but bots are getting far, far worse.
Well you could always just use the proper name. The cc license in question IS anti commercial. A great deal of ai is opens source and non commercial and to those cc is fair game. But if commercial is where you draw the line then envoking this license may do.

Calling it “anti-ai” when its not removes power from your argument. Your invoking something that does not exit and linking to something seemingly unrelated.
Now the bigger question i have, have had since i have seen people do this.
Why is there still not an actual anti-ai license? Seems obvious that there is a need for it? I dont know much about how licenses are created but it strikes me as odd.

I’ve been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn’t specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal...
Trends indicate no. The odds of that vs the costs of the distractions - because Mike, I swear to god, you keep clicking that pen and I’m gonna find a new home for it - don’t make it a winning choice.
In 2002 we solved this with an open skype call where everyone was muted. Convos were easy to start (alt-space to unmute and start talking), which created some distraction but not like Larry and his goddamned sad cowboy music.
I recently bought a used Canon Pixma Pro 100 and I was trying to get it to run on Linux, given that it’s the only computer OS I’ve been using since forever....
Thanks for the recommendation! I tried both, but sadly it didn’t work.
I could extract the ppd file from the MacOS driver, but I still need to substitute some OS specific paths that lead to executable files and icc profiles, like *cupsFilter: “application/vnd.cups-raster 0 /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Filters/Raster2CanonIJ/Raster2CanonIJS.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Raster2CanonIJS”. Not that many, just two or three. I will most likely try to install the drivers on a MacOS VM and see if I can extract those files and place them in a Linux-specific cups directory (/usr/lib/cups or something). I think so far the odds are even.
Update: It looks like I have all the binary files with me. Raster2CanonIJS, Command2CanonIJ, the ICC profiles and whatnot. I’m now looking for some guidance on where I should place those files on Linux, that would belong in /Library/Printers/Canon/…, etc. on MacOS.
I’m also thinking that way wrt to “we need more fast charging for EVs to work”, I recall that plugging into a standard outlet will get you something like 5-8 km an hour, slow charging is totally acceptable for most people’s usages. If you’re in an area where block heaters are the norm you already have outlets at parking spots, if I could commute to work and plug it in, covers most commutes in a 8 hour day, even those of us who rarely go in and live 70k away I’d be getting most of my range back. For the amount I drive, level 1 charging is more than sufficient.
I think a compact with 2-300 k range would suit me just fine, would cover the odd longer trip and I’ll totally grab a rental for anything longer, like I already do it I need to move a fridge.
The latter is an obvious smart deal to take. Just make sure to check yourself for cancer, not walking on a red light etc. according to the thing that kills you. Otherwise do the same. Odds are you would gain more time with your loved ones.
The choice to have a gun at all actually increases your risk of being victim of a violent crime, and that’s just the odds for you. Having a gun in your house at all greatly increases the risk that you or someone in your home will die accidentally, or by suicide. Those odds are greater than those of any violent lunatic breaking into your home and murdering anyone in it.
Aside from poking fun at the notion a violent home invasion is something to contrast with violent crime, there’s a serious problem here. In the study of criminal justice (and many social sciences) it is nearly impossible in most cases to separate correlation and causation. This is due to the difficulties in setting control groups and the many possible factors that may influence these events.
A person cognisant that they are at increased risk of violent crime might feel inclined to acquire a firearm. This doesn’t necessarily mean the purchase caused the victimization. That is like saying doing chemotherapy increases your risk of dying of cancer. And someone experiencing suicidal ideation might purchase a firearm to commit the act. Putting this notion once again on its head.
I have an AR-15. It’s a perfectly fine rifle for hunting medium sized game at ranges of up to about 300y (which is a longer shot than you’ll ever get in the woods). It’s the preferred rifle for people that are trying to thin out coyote packs or sounders of feral pigs.
Fun fact, did you know that having a sink in your home increases the odds that someone in your home will die of drowning? Probably outta get rid of those.
Oooohhhh, okay. I think I can get that. Still, such an odd way to word it. And it doesn’t even make sense, equine sports are NOT popular in the US. Where the hell did they get their data?
