My takeaway is that it’s only original Rogue fans that care about the delineation of the terms. Is there a modern (i.e. post 2000s game) that matches the definition of a roguelike as given in the article?
Dead Cells, as far as I recall. What a f****** awesome game.
Oh, and Hades, except that had a lot of dialogue, which this is saying true roguelikes don’t have. But f*** off, Hades is one of the best games in years.
Definitely Dead Cells covers all of those bullet points in the definition though, and I played that for about as long as I played Hades, 120 plus hours or so.
It’s not really gatekeeping to say that not every game that features procedural generation is part of a very old and well-defined genre. Something like Rogue Legacy or Hades are pretty obviously not in the same genre as nethack, angband, or adom.
As someone who is VERY aware of the over-specificitty of The Berlin Interpretation:
Generally speaking, nobody is saying a roguelike is worse. Just like DOOM is not worse than Operation Flashpoint because it is not a milsim. It just has to do with having criteria to indicate what games people might like if they liked others. And while there are a lot of borderline cases*, generally speaking, roguelikes and roguelites are very much built differently. Roguelites are very much built around “failure is progress” in the sense that, quite often, you actually need to fail a few times to unlock the endgame.
So when people are saying a game is “the wrong genre”… it can get annoying. It isn’t saying that Hades is worse than Stoneshard** but more that they are very different kinds of games.
*: For example, Tales of Maj’Eyal is NOT a roguelike. Maybe you don’t care about the aesthetics (I sure don’t) but stuff like the transmog bag and the unlockable classes and “races” very much disqualify it. But there is a reason it is one of the most loved games among the “roguelike” crowd. It is one of the best modernizations of the formula to ever be made.
So a couple months back I was randomly approached on Steam from someone claimed to be someone from a company called Maple Leaf Studio looking for playtesters for a game of theirs, and that because I had so many hours in Hades and Cult of the Lamb I’d be perfect for it....
Yeah. I saw a mod that added more weapons and stuff but I just don’t view it as worth it.
It absolutely was so repetitive and if you had a bad weapon or skill you just had to wait till you could replace it. No real synergy or play style options.
I stopped playing it cause I had unlocked everything and had pretty much beaten the game in 4 hours by narrowing the gameplay to one loop.
Binding of Isaac has been a staple for me but Hades was fun too. And Risk of Rain 2 if it had better controls would be incredible.
I just go by reviews, usually from people I know. The only real difference between AA/A and Indie titles now really is marketing budget and size of team. Not much else is different. You also run into issues about what counts as indie now: it used to mean without a publisher, but it seems to have morphed into ‘a smaller company.’
But yeah, just look up reviews. Games like FTL, Hades, and so on tend to become known by word of mouth.
This week's #MythologyMonday theme is serpents 🐍
Snakes are associated with various Greek deities such as Apollon, Asklepios, Demeter, Dionysos, and even Hermes. The Erinyes (Furies) are said to have snakes for hair, as is Eris, Goddess of Discord. Today, I'm telling you the story of Asklepios and his staff, the symbol of medicine. In the US, it is often confused with Hermes' staff, the symbol of commerce...
@mythology#Asklepios found the same herb and brought the Cretan prince back to life in the same way. And for this reason snakes are sacred to Asklepios and entwine his staff to this day.
The resurrected prince later had a daughter who became a priestess of Apollon.
As for Asklepios, Hades complained to Zeus that the number of the dead was steadily diminishing, now that mortals were being healed by Asklepios. Zeus, siding with his brother, killed the demigod with a thunderbolt.
So I recently have been playing Cult of the Lamb, a few Doom wads, and had been trying to get some Skyrim mods wokring…
More excitiingly though I was actually approached by this company called Maple Leaf Studio to playtest this game called Realm of Ink. Haven’t mentioned it much on my social medias mainly because they had me sign an NDA. The game is quite fun and very pretty, it’s kind of like Hades but has this awesome art style themed off of Chinese Mythology.
If Hades didn’t have God Mode (which actually works in a pretty interesting way and isn’t just invincibility or whatever), I would have given up incredibly quickly.
Once I enabled it, shit started to actually feel fun for me.
I finished Control last week, likely the best game to marry a creepy funhouse with a sprawling government office that you’ll ever play. I was up and down on this one for a few months. There’s a fun narrative and plenty of atmosphere, but I wasn’t always enjoying the gameplay....
I have plenty of experience with Metroidvanias and I love roguelites, but I quickly bounced off of Dead Cells. It made me feel like I wasn’t progressing at all. Hades was the same way, but it weirdly avoided that problem with how it handles the story (Hades was also better at making runs feel different early on).
Maybe I should try Dead Cells again with assist mode. It looks like the game has piles of content.
I’ve been playing Remnant 2 which I’m really enjoying. Fairly similar to the first one, the moment to moment gunplay and exploration just clicks for me.
Also done a few rounds of Take and Hold in Hotdogs horseshoes and hand grenades which is still my favourite VR game. The new Institution level is kicking my butt though, haven’t worked out the best spots yet.
I’m really looking forward to Hades 2 this year. I especially enjoyed the die to get more story mechanics from the first one.
Same, it’s hard to build expectations, but I also felt a little bit of that with Endwalker’s impending release. “Oh, so we go to the moon now?” when the moon was barely before the halfway point.
One thing that can help is if they can invent methods of moving beyond power scaling. The Endsinger’s potential was mostly dictated by “despair for the future”, which is such a vague concept they could likely invent new such challenges without explicitly saying “This thing is stronger than the last thing you fought”. It’s already hard to claim that the cattle at the far edge of Thavnair are stronger than Hades.

Help! I have a choice to make between Hades, Psychonauts 2, and Doom Eternal. What do you guys think? I’m more of a casual gamer but enjoy a bit of challenge (I liked doom 2016 a lot, but I was told eternal is harder).
Hades would be my choice if you’re looking to be challenged. Give it a few tries on normal difficulty, and if you’re getting your ass kicked it has a great casual friendly accessibility option to turn on a slowly scaling damage reduction that will eventually tune the game to your skill level. You can turn it off at any time, and there are no penalties for using it.
Psychonauts 2 is also a solid choice. Overall it was an excellent sequel and definitely worth playing, but if you’re looking for a challenge look elsewhere. It’s a casual platformer through and through. It’s still a great game in it’s own right, though IMO it doesn’t take as many risks as the original Psychonauts and didn’t quite hit the same emotional highs.
Fingers crossed for some ARM devices running PC games through user-space shenanigans. Basically emulating the stuff Proton doesn’t handle - or hand off to the GPU. They won’t play the newest games any time soon, but a $60 gizmo might run Hades for two hours.
"But having gone down into Hades because of his wife & seeing what sort of things were there, he did not continue to worship #Dionysos, because of whom he was famous, but he thought #Helios to be the greatest of the gods, Helios whom he also addressed as Apollon."

I’m absolutely smitten with Cobalt Core. It’s been called “FTL meets Slay the Spire,” but I’d say it’s more the former than the latter (which works for me, I liked FTL a lot more). There’s also a dash of Hades-style storytelling. This won’t have the legs StS can have for the deckbuilding nerds, but I’m having a blast with it.
The writing cracks me up, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the strategy is keeping me engaged. Also, must protect Riggs at all costs. 💜
