My has gone great! I am using the client, but also following a ton of threads (subreddits) on . It works so much better than I expected and is already workable to replace Reddit. I think things will only get better as the grows and more esoteric/niche areas get populated.

Reddit was my last corporate social media holdout, and I am glad the company inspired me to finally jump ship with bad corpo behavior!

-Time to spread out! Federation is working. Create a 2nd account on a non-kbin.social instance. The Fediverse works better when we federate.
-Lots of group building! These ex-redditers really know their shit!

A better RSS experience

I've been playing around with RSS views of the fediverse hoping to get something comparable to multireddits, but there is a problem.

First of all, it is possible to get reddit feeds on both kbin and lemmy. The URLs look like:

https://KBIN_INSTANCE/rss?magazine=MAGAZINE_NAME
https://LEMMY_INSTANCE/feeds/c/COMMUNITY_NAME?sort=new

Unfortunately, these are problematic when dealing with instances that are not your home instance. Any links to the post page will be absolute remote instance URLs, which means you cannot interact with the post (e.g. leave a comment). The URL really needs to be made relative to your home instance for that to work, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to fix that for a specific post. I can only fix the URL to the magazine/community itself and then hope to locate the post within it again.

If there is a way to get home instance-relative RSS feeds, I'm all ears! Failing that, I might work on a scraper that can take URLs of the form:

https://KBIN_INSTANCE/m/MAGAZINE_NAME@REMOTE_INSTANCE
https://LEMMY_INSTANCE/c/COMMUNITY_NAME@REMOTE_INSTANCE

and generate RSS feeds out of them? But I don't want to reinvent the wheel if something like this is already possible?

It might also be useful to someone trying to write an app with a multireddit-type feature? I will definitely release source if I come up with anything.

EDIT: fixed a typo in URLs

Is a wiki going to be added with useful info/resources like on reddit?

I was there when Digg imploded. Then I was there when Reddit imploded. History doesn't always repeat, but it does echo.

With the , I've been looking around for a way to self host my own or instance, and just like with , the instructions and requirements are prohibitive.

  • There's no Docker container, official or otherwise
  • No Docker compose file, let alone a helm chart
  • There are instead long, painful instructions on how to self-host on a bare metal instance you have to maintain manually, like it's 2003.

@awilbert @danielquinn

We are going to be making them available very soon.

First Lemmy (since we already have it ready).

And then kbin later one (once we finish adding it).

@Smash @firebreathingbunny I'm also quiet happy with wikijs, it has some nice features like git integration and oidc support that I'm using.

So I did figure out that yes, can federate and content. The problem is that Mastodon doesn't know what to do with it, so it (the group) looks like a user that boosts all posts and comments.

I found myself browsing the "federated group" @selfhosted over on https://kbin.social, as I think Kbin has a nicer UX for it.

I didn't really want to create a separate account for group stuff, but that might be what we do in the short term. 🤔

I wrote this in another thread, so copy pasting it here:

I believe that the limitation is part of the Mastodon app, and not related to the Fediverse. There might be a character limit but I don’t think it’s as limited as Mastodon’s.

Btw, Mastodon isn’t really fit for this type of conversation. Mastodon aims to replace tweeter - microblogging interaction, where Lemmy aims to replace Reddit - thread interactions.

Each comment on Lemmy will be treated as microblog on mastodon which isn’t really practical.

3laws ,

Except that that sounds like a Mastodon lack of features. Cuz Twitter had threads. As long as you were replying to someone each conversation was a sub thread and so on.

I love having an entire live TV channel dedicated to re-runs of old Star Trek episodes

Ok so, I have a little Kodi setup which includes a live tv system hooked up to Pluto so I can grab a bunch of channels for free. Turns out, this includes not one, but two whole channels of just Star Trek!

The first one is mostly TNG and the original series, and the other one ("creatively" called More Star Trek) has mainly Voyager and Deep Space Nine. I like these because I don't even have to think about what episode to watch, and can just enjoy some Star Trek!

The only downside to this is well, ads lol

I used to run a plugin on my Kodi that would make TV-style channels based on the original airing channel, complete with EPG and everything.

However, it wouldn't let you add lists of shows and create channels that way. I never got around to making my version, but perhaps someone else has done the work since then.
