Any virtual keyboard / on-screen keyboard recommendations for Gnome (Wayland) users? The default one doesn't support X11/XWayland apps, which unfortunately is most of them...

Pantherina ,

Yes poorly. The input method protocol was done by Purism (which says something as that company seems dead or whatever) and then basically untouched.

gwendolencopper OP ,

@Excigma I can swipe up to force the keyboard to appear, but pressing the keys does nothing in X11 apps (which use XWayland under Wayland), like Chromium browsers or KeepassXC

@estelle As you point out, we are so used to subject-verb-object word order that passive voice can insinuate the object is the actor. As in, "mistakes were made" = the mistakes made themselves!

estelle OP ,

"Rewriting a passive construction to be active almost always makes what you’re saying clearer."

Example: Millions of dollars were embezzled from the company.
Revision: Two executives embezzled millions of dollars from the company.

@WelshAdventurer asks about cycles that may help somebody with a mobility disability get exercise and get around:

Q6. My partner is disabled and can’t walk far due to problems with her foot and back. She is getting frustrated with not being able to exercise and get out of the house. She is looking at getting an electric bike. Does anyone have experience of them? Particularly of using them with a mobility disability? We are in the UK.

meganL ,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@ascentale @WelshAdventurer A6. I'm a disabled cyclist who has ridden 3 different cycles with e-assist. The first two were bikes I already owned that I added e-assist to and the cargo quadricycle came with it.

I would very much recommend them to someone with a mobility disability as they not only extend the range you can go, but as long as you make sure your battery is charged when you embark on a ride, you feel more secure that you can get home safely even if you're completely knackered.

meganL ,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@ascentale @WelshAdventurer Disabled cyclists in the UK should definitely hook up with Wheels for Wellbeing, a kind of group I wish we had in the US. https://wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk/

Basically, I cannot recommend e-cycles enough. But not all mobility disabilities are the same so if you have specific questions, I can try to answer. @bikenite @disability

Cory, as always on a tear

“ You ask Amazon, "What's your cheapest batteries?" and it lies to you. If you click the first link in a search-results page, you'll pay 29% more than you would if you got the best product – a product that is, on average, 17 places down on the results page.”

Capitalism is premised on markets with price transparency, at least by the marquee claims made in econ101.

I want to point out another distinction, neoclassical economics refuses to respond to explicit evidence, both mathematical and empirical, that their theories are garbage. I don't know how many science departments get away with that.

Pulled a ~ 600 € DeLonghi coffee maker out of the dumpster and invested about 50 € in spare parts (water tank, grounds container, and a new magnet valve). Seems like I have a new coffee machine now 😁☕

(It would have gone even faster and without a puddle on the kitchen counter if I had put in the gaskets from the start. 🤦 Ah well.)

I recently replaced the heating element in my delonghi coffee machine, and was also surprised to see how wild it was inside

psud ,

I think they make too much money repairing complex coffee machines to make it difficult

Also unlike phones they don’t need to make them small as possible and able to survive being carried all day, so don’t have those reasons for making things tight and sealed
