I’m looking for a self hosted solution to this problem:

I want to create a full text search index from a collection of PDF manuals (text, not images, I don’t care about OCR here). There is a UI to search for text matches in documents, and clicking a search hit opens the PDF scrolled to where the search hit is (bonus points if the search hit is hilighted)

IlIllIIIllIlIlIIlI ,

I’m using it with ocr and it does highlight the search text and scrolls to it.

Carunga ,

U r right, it does highlight in the pdf. It did not on mobile for me.

It’s not self promotion though?

I’m removing this post because I don’t think it really fits /c/technology, and it does seem rather low effort and somewhat spammy.

The metaverse was to be for businesses what the fediverse is for people.

Hi there! The links in your text lead away from the user’s instance, here are fixed links that stay on each user’s instance: !showerthoughts

Buffalox ,

Something like that, but most people probably don’t realise the scope Zuckerberg had in mind for the Metaverse.

Mostly because it’s ridiculous, but Zuckerberg imagined everything could be Metaverse. Work, but not just office and meetings, but also production both design and factories.

For home use shopping was pretty obvious, but even that seemingly low hanging fruit doesn’t work. I bet he thought dating and holidays could be a thing too, somewhat like Total Recall.

It’s kind of hilarious to try to imagine Zuckerberg lying awake at night, and think: “HEY! This crazy thing could work too, man this is going to be big.”

The problem with all the little tweaks is that it doesn't seem to work when you SSH into another system. I caught myself typing in CAPS on a remote system one too many time. Performed a little surgery on the keyboard and solved the problem.

Algorithm-based social media "recommendations" has normalized us putting up with blatant SPAM

Imagine if gmail or outlook were to place emails by 'creators and brands you might like' in your inbox!?

Following the process of enshittification, the algorithm on many social media platforms is becoming an excuse to push blatant amounts of SPAM to users. It starts as a feature that is genuinely useful, but becomes a tool to show you ads, content from paying users or to keep you hooked with rage-bait content as social media platforms seek to extract more value out of its users.

Algorithm-based social media has its benefits, but looking forward it is becoming increasingly necessary that such an algorithm runs client-side and is owned by the user.

Kagami ,

You are right, I realised this when I completely moved to the Fediverse. The non-existence of the ads is a breath of fresh air.

God that made it so hard to use Twitter. I just wanted to follow people I know but it was so difficult to sift through all the other noise they kept adding. I thought I could do the third party app to help out with that, but Twitter basically dropped third party apps years ago.

Any suggestions?

You can follow from your fedi account but it doesn't differentiate between posts and replies so they all appear in your feed. They should fix that, it'd be nice.

@Fediverse

I have a question to all of you who have subscribed to Lemmy groups from Fediverse projects that aren't Lemmy. Who follow Lemmy groups from e.g. #Mastodon, #GlitchSoc, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #MissKey, what's still called #CalcKey, #FoundKey, #Mitra, #GoToSocial, #Socialhome, #Friendica etc., but also #kbin. And I sincerely hope that I'm not the only subscriber to this entire group who isn't on Lemmy.

My question is: If a Lemmy post contains an image or any other media, can you see it?

I'm on #Hubzilla. And when someone posts something with an image in it, I can see the post, but I can't see the image. When someone posts something with a video in it, I can't see the video either.

I can see images in comments with no problem. But I can't see them in posts.

How about you on Mastodon? Or on CalcKey? Or on /kbin? Or elsewhere?

I'm asking and hoping for replies because I need to find out if the issue is on Lemmy's or on Hubzilla's side so I can file a bug report.

jrp ,

@Juno Rowland Let me know...

jupiter_rowland OP ,

@_jayrope I've filed an issue for Lemmy a while ago, but Nutomic says that Lemmy is working properly, and the issue has to be on Hubzilla's side.

Now I've also filed one for hubzilla-addons, hoping that it has to do with Pubcrawl. If not, I'll have to file it for hubzilla-core again.
