It’s from the early days of Greatest Gen, and references Captain DeSoto of the USS Hood (NCC-1703). DeSoto and the Hood made several appearances in TNG, and Ben and Adam leaned into his chill vibes, theorizing that the Hood would be a great place to work.
It’s also an allusion to the phrase Friend of Dorothy, an older euphemism for LGBT people.
I think it was originally jokingly conceived as a sort of passphrase or shibboleth for fans of the pod to identify each other without revealing their embarrassing enthusiasm to outsiders, e.g.
Season 6 Episode 3 Attack of the Killer App is Still Amazing!
This episode aged soo well! Especially all the commentary about Apple, privacy, and internet culture. It's surprising how well all the jokes aged in spite of all the changes to technology and society since the episode released.
Ok, so I'm trial following @startrek and I'm getting a torrent(<a bit of hyperbole) posts in my home page. How do you people that follow hundreds/thousands handle this? Just ignore most of what flows down the page?
I've tried to be careful curating the people I follow, and it was fairly manageable til today. Trying to avoid setting up a lemmy acct, but StarTrek is only gonna get more active, and there's more to life than StarTrek :^O How to manage?
Personally, I wouldn't recommend immutable distros, as I think they limit our freedoms far too much, not that the way the general stack is going doesn't do that already. Not debating that here, since it's a hot and controversial topic currently, at least in the segment of the linux using population that cares about this stuff and which picked linux for that. Imo, if we do this, we'll basically make of the OS one block, from bootloader, to kernel, to initramfs, to display manager and finally desktop, especially since I'm hearing whispers of attempts at removing the tty kernel rendering being done, which will force us into using a specific compositor, desktop and so on, so we'll be exactly like windows or mac or android, so we lost everything, and then what's the point of linux?
If you want to use immutable distros anyway, I don't recommend silverblue for gaming, but I do recommend you give ublue linux a try, it has many drivers included, even some udev rules.
@AudraTran@linux_gaming what was that last thing? an image? if so, can you put alt text on it, I dk what it's supposed to mean. Also, it does work for me, as in, I was able to follow the group and post some comments on specific threads, though unfortunately they appear on the other side with no username, at least none I can see, maybe there's an avatar but it's not labeled
for those of you who are passionate about #linux#gaming, even if on the #computer or #SteamDeck, be that on #arch, #fedora, #ubuntu or something else, I recommend you subscribe to the lemi sub...what, reddit, thread? dedicated to this: @linux_gaming
Even if you don't make an account on lemi.world or another such instance, you can subscribe to the sub, by putting that handle in your search bar, or clicking it here if you're on mastodon, since lemi is a fediverse platform. I dk if the r/linuxgaming community will be going away soon, but given what's happening with reddit, maybe it won't shut down when the protests are over, if they ever will be, which I hope is not likely.
I love having an entire live TV channel dedicated to re-runs of old Star Trek episodes
Ok so, I have a little Kodi setup which includes a live tv system hooked up to Pluto so I can grab a bunch of channels for free. Turns out, this includes not one, but two whole channels of just Star Trek!
The first one is mostly TNG and the original series, and the other one ("creatively" called More Star Trek) has mainly Voyager and Deep Space Nine. I like these because I don't even have to think about what episode to watch, and can just enjoy some Star Trek!
I used to run a plugin on my Kodi that would make TV-style channels based on the original airing channel, complete with EPG and everything.
However, it wouldn't let you add lists of shows and create channels that way. I never got around to making my version, but perhaps someone else has done the work since then.
