@neilhimself thinking about introducing my child¹ to Neverwhere² but I'm not sure she'll get the references (she's spent like 2 days total in London). Thoughts? Maybe I wait? I will take any advice
¹ almost 10 years old only, but precocious....a big fan of Jane Austen for example.
² my favorite of yours.
@Girlonavespa Yes. When I read Neverwhere, I had never set foot in England (I was an adult, though), I knew there were many references flying way above my head, but it didn't prevent me from loving the book and becoming a lifelong fan of @neilhimself in the process.
@neilhimself well it was a moot point. A day or so after I asked this I went into her room to find her reading it! I was v confused because I hadn't mentioned it to her, but we recently finished watching GO2 and I think she must have known that was you too, wandered past the Folio Society edition of Neverwhere on the bookshelf and your name caught her eye.
She is enjoying it greatly and loves Door! I might try Stardust next.
(It's also a lesson in the value of growing up with a home library.)
I am no branding expert, but calling your opponents an "illegal shadow library" makes you sound like a villain, and elevates your opponents to protagonists, in an anime series like Read or Die.
For sure. Textbooks being that expensive is a paywall for knowledge and only means the rich have access to it without having to sacrifice quality of life.
Didn't even know until I read the comments that textbooks even come with one-time-passwords now for online only homework.
@demerara@rewarp@bookstodon libgen and scihub are out here fulfilling the Internets original goal of becoming an open library of all human knowledge to enable a scientific and educational renaissance.
And those profiting from perpetuating the under-education and ignorance of the American people are having none of it.
@elonjet Has anyone tried calculating the carbon footprint of Elon's private jet flights alone? Because it really makes me feel like anything I do to reduce my own footprint is cancelled out by his (and presumably his other billionaire buddies').
Attempting to unsubscribe from a newsletter results in me being "temporarily blocked"
One good day I wound up with a subscription to a site named Schwans, and I was receiving purchase orders from a guy named "John D." for some reason. So, naturally, I tried to unsubscribe. I got an error message saying:
Sorry, you have been temporarily blocked
We have implemented new measures to help protect against fraudulent activity. Something unusual was detected with your access to schwans.com and you’ve been temporarily blocked. Please contact our team at 1-888-724-9267 and provide the Ray ID shown below. We’ll have you back online as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to defend and protect customers from ever-changing cybersecurity threats.
Odd thing, so I go into the main website and unsubscribe manually. All fine and dandy until I start getting these emails AGAIN because Schwans decided to rebrand as Yelloh and that apparently reset their unsubscriptions and back to the same shenanigans we go!
Most companies use a service to send their newsletters. You should be able to find the IP address from the email headers and then find the abuse email for that company. Email them, tell them you are unable to unsubscribe and their customer is thus sending you spam. Attach the email headers and 90% of the time they will take action (at least from my informal observation when I used to do this).
Boy howdy. This week's No Such Thing As A Fish goes from ridiculous American blue laws and "American cheese" - two of their favorite misunderstood topics - to straight up insulting Americans, including an out-of-the blue cheap shot by @neilhimself at American pharmacists. Jesus, guys. What gives?
@RolloTreadway oh is that the server lark? I think the design of this is wrong the server lark should be seemless IMO. put a bunch of peeps off, lucky I'm a geek :)
Friends, sorry (my English is still beginner-level) but, I'm trying. Well, what's the persistent trouble that hinders you the most in your daily life? In my case, it's problems with sensory stimuli. For example, sounds. It causes me a lot of anxiety too and makes my case of high blood sugar worse (I have type 2 diabetes). Medicines don't help me..only physical exercises
I've had good luck with walking. Granted, my pace is faster than most people walk (4 miles per hour), but that's just how I walk. At the end of an hour I've worked up a good sweat, and I'm totally relaxed. A couple of those a day does it for me.
Find the right shoes. When I started walking I wore my regular shoes, and they hurt me, especially my joints. I started getting good shoes, with very cushiony soles, and it was immediately better.
Maybe one of the dirtiest groups of people on the planet, the #GOP. And there's well over a dozen of em. They deserved to be clowned on. Y'all got jokes?
