I don't know if and how crossposting functions in kbin/lemmy, so hopefully it'll work that way

but unfortunately, no, doesn't work. Even the "old" iso stucks at the exact same position with the exact same behavior :(

Ah nice. At least something. But I don’t think it’ll change anything since it’s still grub outputting that, and not a life sign from the kernel.

In five years time, some CTO will review the mysterious outage or technical debt in their organisation.

They will unearth a mess of poorly written, poorly -documented, barely-functioning code their staff don't understand.

They will conclude that they did not actually save money by replacing human developers with LLMs.

@technology

nyan ,

Actually, what really matters is not the quality of your code or the disruptiveness of your paradigm, or whether you can outlive the competitors that existed when you started up, but whether you can keep the money coming. The rideshares in particular will fail over time in any country with labour laws that allow drivers to unionize—if the drivers make a sane amount of money, the company’s profits plummet, and investors and shareholders head for the hills. Netflix is falling apart already because the corporations with large libraries of content aren’t so happy to license them anymore, and they’re scrambling to make up the revenue they’ve lost. Google will probably survive only because its real product is the scourge of humanity known as advertising.

Again, it’s all business considerations, not technical ones. Remember the dot-com boom of the 1990s, or are you not old enough? A lot of what’s going on right now looks like the 2.0 (3.0? 4.0?) release of the same thing. A few of these companies will survive, but more of them will fold, and in some cases their business models will go with them.

DingoBilly ,

I actually don’t disagree with you and think we’re on the same page. Basically, you can summarise our whole discussion as all companies are doomed to fail at end of day.

If you don’t change and innovate you will fail.

If you change and innovate too much you will fail.

Finding the middle ground is rough and most companies will fail.

For anyone having issues with the hashtag, there is also and @allautistics (the latter being a recently created group that you can follow and post to).

They are intended for anyone who is (or thinks they might be) autistic (formally or self-diagnosed).

anomalon ,
@anomalon@neurodifferent.me avatar

@marytzu @100mountains @allautistics @actuallyautistic

This is such a valuable point. Internal vs. external conflict.

External conflict requires a receiver who receives it as conflict, though, and I wish autistic spaces here were better at declining to take up the offense.

100mountains initially spoke primarily in first-person. It would be so fucking cool if first-person sentences at least got a full-on pass from masking. Let people describe their own perspectives on depersonalized things without any risk of someone self-identifying with those things enough to say OUCH! minus one point for aggression!!

(I don't want to have to caveat, but I will for clarity, that I am criticizing an aspect of social choreography that doesn't have to be this way, and not either of you personally)

The Penultimate Truth
Philip K. Dick

Part of the SF Masterworks Collection. Despite being nearly 60 years old the narrative around the manipulation of the truth feels incredibly prescient. Wondering whether David Whitaker had read it before he came up with story The Enemy of the World.

The McCartney Legacy Volume 1: 1969-73 by Allan Kozinn & Adrian Sinclair

Absolutely loved this. I’m a huge McCartney fan and not only did I enjoy reading about his early post-Beatles career in minute detail, but it was also great to revisit those early solo and Wings records with the added context the book offers. Heartily recommend to any other fans and I look forward to future volumes.

A Season in Sinji by J. L. Carr

A novel combining war, cricket and a battle for love. Enjoyed this. It’s jolly in places and then hits you with a bleaker reality. Helps to love cricket as much as I do I would imagine given its importance in the story.

Prominent "free-speech absolutist" threatens to sue Jewish anti-hate group because it engaged in free speech he didn't like.

"Elon Musk has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League after accusing the civil rights group that campaigns against antisemitism and bigotry of trying to “kill” his X social media platform.

"The owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, said the ADL was trying to shut down his company by 'falsely accusing it and me of being antisemitic'."

If your list of enemies includes the ADL, then there's a more-than-reasonable chance that you're an anti-semite.

YSK: Just because something is easy for you, does not mean that it is easy.

ETA; Why you should know; everyone has natural talents, everyone has skills they developed with practice or over time. Something that feels easy to you might be difficult for someone else to grasp, or they might have a different background or a different way of doing things. When you show someone else how to do something, or when you ask someone else to do something, you need to set aside your expectations on how they might do that thing, or how quickly, or how well.

Be patient. Understand not everyone comes naturally to every new skill or new talent. Some people have learning disabilities or just a lack of familiarity with skills you consider "basic." And try not to belittle someone for needing extra time to master something you find "simple" or they may never try again!

Edit2: Kind of like how I can't figure out how to edit this to save my life. I've been belittled in the past for being bad at things so my instinct was to delete this, but seeing all the conversation, I couldn't bring myself to do it! Consider me a lesson in action!

Just because you send me malware after some text I wanted to read (in http response), don’t give you rights to force me to execute the malware.

Just because I have your book (or page) and look at part of it doesn’t give you the right to force me to read it in full or dictate how I’m reading it.

I have every right to reveal/read only part of the book/page. We didn’t sign any agreement, if you want me to first look at the part you want to or agree to some license nothing stopping you to do, stuff like paywall or subscription exists…

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

@fediverse

mima ,

@halm Diaspora only federates with Friendica (because the latter has diaspora protocol support). Friendica doesn't have its "own protocol", it uses ActivityPub with its own proprietary extensions IIRC.

I released my first game on Steam and got rid of impostor syndrome!

My first game Mushy Score is out on Steam! I have been creating games since I was a child but never felt like a real game dev. Now I finally have a game that I can show to other people.

Mushy Score is a 2D Roguelike where you fight against endless waves of enemies. Collect points and try to get a high score! I am super exited for the release !

If you like similar games go check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2480740/Mushy_Score/

Just bought and played it and had a lot of fun! I love the frequent powerups and the variety of the monsters. The first time I saw the toad was truly terrifying! Lol. I'd love to see some kind of powerup that helps with arial enemies. Maybe the plants can shoot upwards, too? Or you can? Or a flying plant? Or a second bullet that goes up at 45 degrees? Anyway, well worth the super low asking price. Looking forward to playing more! It works perfect on the , too!

A coop PvE game for two dads and three sons?
A shooter, preferably. Any recommendations, guys? The youngest lad is 10, so as little violence as possible. Thanks 😉

@gaming

WaterWaiver , (edited )

I did this previously by using MultiMC (now PrismLauncher). Make a mix of mods, send them the zip of the whole game instance and ask them to drag and drop it onto MultiMC. The biggest issue I encountered was one family member having a black ingame world until they changed a setting in the graphics mod, otherwise it didn’t seem to be too hard.

By comparison Minetest is much easier for playing mods with family. Everyone downloads the server’s mods when they join. But the interest is lower.

Broken ,

Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge is up to 6 players. Technically it’s tons of violence, but it’s cartoony. You can do online or couch coop too.

It's September 15th! That means it's the official start of the Spooky Season 🦇 I'm celebrating day one by:

  1. Starting to read "The Only Good Indians" by Stephen Graham Jones. It's got tons of ghost deer, so I'm pumped!

  2. Watching "The Twilight Zone" reboot. The first story was creepy and interesting!

  3. Playing "Signalis". It had me hooked after I picked up a copy of "The King in Yellow" in-game

This evening, we watched "Creep":

  • A truly disturbing killer 👍👍
  • The story is presented as a found footage montage 👍

This has been on my watchlist for years and I'm glad we finally watched it! One of the most genuinely freaky movies I've watched this year. If you're looking for interesting characters, tasteful jump scares, and lingering psychic damage, this is a must watch!

I finished my last novel for this spooky season this morning. Fittingly, it was "I'm Thinking of Ending Things":

  • No monsters to be found in this one 😐
  • The story kept me guessing for a long time 👍👍

The only reason this doesn't immediately beat "Red X" and "The Between" for the best novel this season is because I guessed the ending a little early. Still, a thrilling and interesting read!
