what is this process? @android 🙄

Zeus ,

if you want to make your posts more convenient to us lemmings, don’t mention/tag until the second paragraph

the first paragraph gets converted into a title with the ugly formatting, but as long as the first paragraph is plaintext (or uses lemmy formatting) it looks fine

Another day, another product joining the Google graveyard. On the upside, this time it's not a messaging app.

From The Verge:

"You might remember Google had a $5,000 Jamboard whiteboarding meeting room display — well, that’s also discontinued. The Jamboard hardware will no longer receive software updates on September 30th, 2024, and its license subscriptions will expire the same day.

"Then users will have until December 31st, 2024, to back up Jam their files, and on that date, Google will cut off access and begin permanently deleting files."

Pity the schools, universities, and businesses that paid Google $5000 for a "smart" whiteboard, only to now be told their files will be deleted.

@BBC_News_Labs Hi. I don't know if this is two-way or not. At some point a few years ago you created a hex cartogram for UK elections e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50770798 Obviously the constituencies have changed this year so you'll need a new map for the next General Election. We've already made a first draft of a 2023 layout that is open source so may I suggest you use that? https://open-innovations.org/projects/hexmaps/builder.html?https://raw.githubusercontent.com/odileeds/hexmaps/gh-pages/maps/uk-constituencies-2023.hexjson

"Nah, I don't stim!"
"Is THIS stimming?"
"I stim, therefore I am"

-from "Initiation Rites for the Late-Identified "-

I really thought I don't stim. I don't rock or flap my hands or jump or chew things or make stimmy sounds.

Of course, I do softly grind my teeth (sometimes I may wear night guard during daytime too), wiggle my toes or legs, enjoy knitting simple patterns (= the same repetitive motion), fidget like there's no tomorrow with any small object I can get my hands on and may start picking my nails if I can't find anything else, doodle, I might undo my hair and braid it while watching TV, or braid tassels of my throw blanket...

Stimming is healthy and good for you. Do it.

If -as is the case with many late-identified autists- you have suppressed your stims or been pressured to stop and feel like you have forgotten how to stim, then try to start again. Learn about different stims and just try different ones until you find something that does the trick for you.

infiniteminimal ,
@infiniteminimal@mastodon.social avatar

@ReimanSaara @btaroli @actuallyautistic it can also be in allistic society’s interests to minimise or dismiss the effects or visibility of autistic being. There is emotional, mental, cultural and literal cost to them in accepting us and adapting to us.

@CynAq @hmm_cook @actuallyautistic ahaha People issues aside? Accessibility Coach. I wanna yell at people/corps for not making appropriate/legally-mandated/completely normal and low effort accommodations for people with disabilities of all kinds. Autism being just one of many things that are normative to the point that someone should write guide to it. “seeeeeeeee i promise it’s not that hard to be nice to people who have different needs than you.” 🤣

@BBC_News_Labs I read the blog post and saw nothing about how they are measuring the performance of LLMs at this task, or how they are validating the results.
Also no info about the resources that would be required to catalog this data the "old-fashioned way" with human indexers using a controlled vocabulary, or a "formerly novel" approach like crowdsourced tags.

slowe ,
@slowe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

From having processed the RMFI, yes, it is hard. It is deliberately so.

It is a shame that UK news organisations don't just commit to creating and maintaining a joint, open, shared, structured version of the RMFI where journalists clean up and tag the data using their actual domain expertise.

I haven't seen any interviews with her, but / should really be speaking with Kassandra Luciuk about the SS veteran invited to Parliament. Luciuk is a historian (Dalhousie) of the Ukrainian community in 20th-century . She demonstrates that some Cold-War Canadian officials were quite happy for right-wing Ukrainian migrants to use violence against communist labour leaders, also from Ukraine, already in the country.

2/ This week I've read/heard many discussions in the media of SS veterans' migration to , but none with historians. What I've seen are conversations with politicians. Fine, this is a contemporary political debate. Still, all of these conversations claim that "we don't know enough" about the history. But scholars know more than politicians! If I were a journalist, I'd start with Luciuk, but other (of migration, anti-communism, intelligence, politics) could help too. @histodons
