Re Drew Barrymore crossing the picket line:

https://mastodon.social/

Remember that once non-WGA writers cross the picket line, they won't be able to join the union later, should they want or need to. It's worth reminding them of this.

@romancelandia

An update from the National Book Foundation, regarding Drew Barrymore crossing picket lines for writers.

tl;dr: they aren't siding with the striking writers so much as shying from the bad publicity.

Still, it works.

"Super committed to end the strike" by not negotiating in good faith and waiting until all writers and actors are broke, more like.

Good production values aren't "too pricey"--it just means C-suit assholes would get slightly smaller checks if they paid writers, actors and crew at least livable wages.

But all these fuckers want serfs begging for bread and mercy, they don't see fellow humans worth respect or just compensation.

Tweet by Robin Bradford (@Tuphlos): How cheaply was it given away if y'all were making billions on it? And also, didn't you set the prices? What you mean is, now that the writers and performers want a piece of the action, we don't make enough to support them and us. And so, they can't have any. Quoted tweet by Nina Metz: Warner Bros Discovery CFO says "too long valuable content was 'given away' too cheaply" I'd argue: a) $15 subscribe to HBO on cable somehow wasn't considered "giving away" TV/fil too cheaply b) they've been making too many pricey shows (link to The Hollywood Reporter piece I put in my post) /end quoted tweet
Tweet by Bree Rogers in reply to Robin: I've been watching all of this thinking about how every time someone tries to set up a subscription service for romance novels/audiobooks, it immediately collapses because the model rests on either screwing consumers who underuse it, or creators by not paying for content's use.
Tweet by me, replying to Robin: And watch them increase the rates the moment the strike ends, to "pay for the unfair/inflated/absurd/entitled demands" of the people who create the content they sell--because parting with any of their obscene profits will never be on the cards for them.

@romancelandia

seem to have reached a tentative agreement for a new collective contract.

Here's the message, shared on twitter by Adam Conover (of "Adam Ruins Everything"):
"We did it. We have a tentative deal.

Over the coming days, we'll discuss and vote on it, together, as a democratic union. But today, I want to thank every single WGA member, and every fellow worker who stood with us in solidarity. You made this possible. Thank you.

A reminder, in the ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike... Without the talented artists & craftspeople who make movies & shows, there won't be any future original classics, just A.I. ripping off and regurgitating things an algorithm deems popular. How would it know? It hasn't any real friends.

Don't forget to stream Good Omens (Seasons 1 and 2), give them good ratings, keep sharing it across social media and support the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes to help make Season 3 happen! The writers and actors deserve a livable income and reasonable work hours/conditions, as well as the opportunity to make the high-quality art they want to share with the world 💚
