PhobosAnomaly , in Pocklington: Farmer dies after being run over by his Range Rover

That’s a shame for the family, especially the wife that may well have seen him dead earlier in the evening but thought it was something normal that he was doing.

That said, it’s remarkable that the only person that got hurt by his ability to control vehicle was himself, looking at the list of blunders he had made with other vehicles.

steeznson , in ‘It’s just a rich man’s playground now’: how St Ives became patient zero of British overtourism | Cornwall

My in-laws live in Cornwall. Off the tourist beat near Troon. I find the whole place terribly depressing given the enormous divides between the haves and have-nots. The tourist trap parts like St Ives and Padstow are like theme parks, the latter definitely being Rick Stein Land; then, the poorer parts remind me of rural Ayrshire where my Dad’s family are from.

My wife has a lot of positive associations with the place with childhood memories of grandparents and other relatives. I’ve not managed to make any of my own despite visiting at least once a year.

Claptrap otherwise.

‘Yea they happen in Northern Ireland but it was like, the Northern Ireland’s who are British loyalists so it totally doesn’t matter for the purposes of speculative anti English bit for a Welsh National paper. “

Not sure if you heard, but Ireland had this big thing over the English living there. Northern Irish protestants are English.

Northern Irish protestants are English.

Ulster was settled by English and Scots 400 years go, so if that is English to you fair enough. I can only hope your education wasn’t expensive.

You don’t belong here, reactionary. Would you tell First Nations Americans that the white Europeans occupying their lands are real Americans, representative of them? Do you tell Palestinians that their occupiers are Palestinians?

Like I don’t understand why you’d bring such an obviously ignorant take to the table - do you genuinely know nothing of why it’s Ireland and Northern Ireland? Do you know nothing of the Troubles? Do you think the violence and ethnoreligious lines just disappeared when the good Friday agreement was signed? Do you not know about them because your education was inexpensive?

I think you’ve forgotten what the article is about and perhaps in anger, entered into a bit of performative leftism.

If you want to argue against my position that the article is claptrap, hand picked for a welsh audience, let’s go.

If you want to get into a fight, as you seem determined so to do, over broader and unrelated topics like colonialism and imperialism, there are plenty of people who will indulge you, but I will not.

ProfessorOwl_PhD ,
@ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net avatar

Your position is based on your assumption that unionists in northern Ireland are representative of Irish people rather than English people, despite an ongoing race war over their englishness. Catholic and protestant communities are still walled off from each other to maintain the relative peace. The idea that imperialism and colonialism are some unimportant detail of the past is preposterous, they’re ongoing issues that make up the core of northern Irish politics.

As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives, Each wife had seven sacks, Each sack had seven cats, Each cat had seven kits: Kits, cats, sacks, and wives, How many were there going to St Ives?

Renationalise and sue the old owners and management for as much as we can claw back. It’s been a complete con.

IzzyScissor , in Review says puberty blocker curb has not led to suicide rise

“We only saw a small rise, so until statistically significant numbers of children kill themselves, the brutality will continue.”

Why is “suicide” the metric for healthcare to begin with? Imagine if dentists acted like this. “No one committed suicide from not receiving a root canal in the last 3 years, so we’ve determined them to be medically unnecessary.”

MonsterMonster , in Internet replaces TV as UK’s most popular news source for first time

It’s very rare that we watch broadcast TV or record anything to a PVR. It’s all streaming on Netflix/Amazon to TV or on my phone. Haven’t watched TV in the conventional sense for some years now.

GreatAlbatross , (edited ) in More bus services could come under control of councils under planned law
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

This would be great news. Imho, council run buses are a great public good.
When you have a large town/city, it’s really important to have a way to get around that’s not expensive.
You only have to visit somewhere with a properly run network to see the difference.

Reading for example:

As a municipally owned bus service, the council says Reading Buses can invest an additional £3m a year in the bus network, around 12-15% of its annual turnover, because it does not pay out dividends to private shareholders.

Money from commuter services also subsidises smaller less well-used routes.

Edit: Another place it helps councils: Old people bus passes.

In June 2023 the LGA said there was a £452 million gap in the funding councils receive from government compared to the actual number of ENCTS journeys made in 2022. This meant that councils were having to plug the financial gap from their “own stretched budgets”, which was “completely unsustainable

So a LA owned bus company with lower fares means the council doesn’t end up making up the shortfall between what the government pays for free journeys and what the bus company decides to charge.

10_0 , in Fish and chips price rise tops UK takeaways

Its around £9 for fish and chips near me. So you multiply it by say, 5 ,for the number of people and you’re spending 45 quid on just fish and chips (scraps might be included)
