s12 , in Ukraine war latest: British-supplied tanks used in Ukraine's Russian incursion, BBC told

Yay!

nickb333 , in Drunken woman defecated on police officer who tried to put her in handcuffs
@nickb333@fedia.io avatar

I had to check if it was one of Tim Martin's but apparently it's a Stonegate, and recently refurbished too.

Streamwave , in Bluesky: Social media site reports surge in new UK users after Elon Musk's riot comments

Neither Mastodon or Bluesky ever really clicked with me, although I’ve tried and will continue to use both, but I enjoy using Threads because there’s so much cool non-political content there. My feed is archaeologists or astronomists, historians writers and photographers. It being able to connect up to the Fediverse is cool too.

blackn1ght ,

It being able to connect up to the Fediverse is cool too.

Didn’t a huge majority of the fediverse defederate from Threads?

Streamwave ,

Yeah probably. Most ‘big’ accounts aren’t on Mastodon anyway though, they’re on Threads.

10_0 , in Labour MPs begin quitting X over ‘hate and disinformation’

People still use twitter?

Flax_vert , in Woman who ‘first shared fake name’ of Southport suspect arrested

As awful as this was, the fact she said “if this is true” and deleting it within an hour, I tend to believe her that it was in fact a really stupid mistake. Although maybe it could serve a lesson to other people not to make a really stupid mistake

Although with her anti lockdown antics, I can also see a good doubt for that.

Hossenfeffer , in The hypocrisy at the heart of racist riots.

steeznson , in UK riots: how does the violence compare with unrest in August 2011?

The 2011 riots were terrible but at least they gave us that viral image of the guy posing with an enormous bag of looted basmati rice.

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah but this one had the brick guy, Greggs boy and sundry other idiots.

thehatfox , in Elon Musk shares fake news about England rioters being sent to Falklands
@thehatfox@lemmy.world avatar

Melon really has a bee in his bonnet about Britain at the moment.

Gradually_Adjusting , (edited ) in Thousands of counter-protesters take to UK streets as far-right unrest fails to materialise
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

I am here to reiterate that Sir Starmer’s idea of increasing the number of police would be a fundamentally flawed reaction.

Edit: the point is kindly rescinded - I do best when I stay in my wheelhouse

xor ,

I think you misunderstand the idea - he wasn’t proposing hiring more police, but temporarily increasing the total man-hours being worked to make sure there is sufficient capacity to respond

There’s a significant number of police staff, including those who usually work non-citizen-facing roles, who are trained to be riot police, for circumstances just like this.

Gradually_Adjusting ,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks, that does sound more reasonable than the impression I had.

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

It’s creative accounting because hiring more police takes time and costs money - getting some of the back room onto normal rounds frees up those with riot training.

Minarble ,
MTK , in Royal Mint opens factory in south Wales to recover gold from e-waste

So they don’t just make mints for the royal family?

stupidcasey ,

Of course not that’s ridiculous, they make Royal® Brand Mints! They need gold for the wrapper foil. After all choosy Royals Choose Royal®’s!

DISCLAIMER, the royal family in no way endorses, enjoys encourage or engages with Royal® Brand candy

Zip2 , in Thames, Yorkshire and Northumbrian Water face £168m fines for sewage spills

This is per day, right? Right?

GreatAlbatross , in UK protests: No 10 to hold Cobra meeting over escalating violence
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

For those unaware, despite the (awesome) sounding acronym, a COBRA is a meeting in the Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms.

They generally involve people at the top of the decision tree for the involved parties. The meetings for the foot-and-mouth outbreak for example brought in the highest levels of MAFF.

apotheotic , in Malaysia is first country to issue ‘do not travel to UK' warning over riots

Is there any outlet providing aggregated information about all the riots so far? I’d like to find out more but naturally " UK riots" just brings up the most recent event because of how media works

urheber , in Which rural area will take the UK’s nuclear waste?

ILL TAKE IT, I WANT IT. ILL FUCKING TAKE IT, GIVE ME YOUR NUCLEAR WASTE!!!

Zip2 , in Which rural area will take the UK’s nuclear waste?

I’m guessing one that isn’t covered by a national park, aonb, is sparsely populated, has the least benefit from tourism and doesn’t produce food.

I’m not sure where that would be.

PhobosAnomaly ,

Newport city centre then wheeeyyyyyy

I suspect it’ll probably end up in the same places most other large hazardous industrial sites will be - rural, coastal just off an arterial road route somewhere. See also: Torness, Easington, Milford Haven etc.

That said, Tom Scott did a video (because of course he did) on plans for nuclear testing on UK soil - have a look if you’re interested - and it seems the answer to that was underneath a chunky section of Yorkshire moorland.

Baggins ,

Get good old Nige to take to Clacton. It will only improve the place.

Zip2 ,

Except he’ll just take it to his mate in America.
