mojo , in TIL: The CDC estimates that 5 percent of all hospital admissions result in a healthcare-associated infection, culminating in approximately 722,000 infections and 75,000 deaths each year

What is the goal of posting this

richieadler ,

To inform?

mojo ,

To inform what, what are you going to do with this info

Byter ,

Maybe someone who holds the misconception that hospitals will “bail them out” of bad lifestyle habits when they get sick will see this and start taking a proactive approach to maintaining their health.

It’s plausible!

richieadler ,

What do you have against being informed?

all-knight-party ,
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

Well, y'know, ignorance is bliss, sometimes

richieadler ,

And that’s why the world is in this shitty state.

Thinking (specially thinking critically) consumes too much energy and too many people are unwilling to do it.

What is anyone going to do with anything from this community. The other day there was a post about how there used to be rocks with some words on them in the middle of nowhere.

I suppose that this information at the least could inform people to be more perceptive of signs of infection after a hospital visit given how common they can be.

Moeaverage OP ,

I learned it today

_number8_ , in TIL Spiders might dream. New study finds evidence of REM-like movement in arachnids

all animals are obviously way more intelligent than science gives them credit for. humans were just so callous and careless for centuries that we didn’t bother to pay them any respect. like obviously crabs feel pain when you boil them, why the fuck wouldn’t they? that’s a pretty basic evolutionary mechanism

Arsenal4ever , in TIL that John Lennon's son had to buy back postcards sent to him by his father from his widow Yoko Ono

"The most ironic thing is with the settlement that I did receive [20 million pounds from his father’s estate since John only gave him 100K in his will], is that I’ve been buying his stuff back with that, so, I’m buying his stuff back with his money, which is absolutely insane.”

TIEPilot , in TIL The first recorded human death by robot was in 1979 when 25-year-old Ford Motor assembly line worker Robert William was struck by an arm of a malfunctioning one-ton robot

Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics would have prevented this.

First Law:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Second Law:

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Third Law:

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

How would that prevent a malfunction from accidentally killing someone?

dbilitated , in TIL of the CLOACA PROFESSIONAL : a large art installation that turns food into feces.
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

Eggyhead , in The Japanese developers of Puck-Man changed the name to Pac-Man when porting it to North America to avoid a scenario where the "P" in Puck Man would be changed to an "F", forming an obscene name.

The comic character Tin-tin is called Tan-tan in Japan for similar reasons.

tronx4002 , in TIL The term keystone species refers to species that define an entire ecosystem, where it would be dramatically different or cease to exist without the species. Examples: beavers, wolves, and sea otte

Sea otter, I would not have expected.

ArugulaZ , in TIL of PISS CHRIST: a controversial depiction of a crucifix immersed in urine created by artist and photographer Andres Serrano

I heard this was by Maplethorpe?

Kolanaki , in TIL - "Mage" derives from Magush, the old persian name for Zoroastrian priests, which means "Fire worshipper"
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

This makes it even more interesting that fire mages in Dark Souls are called “pyromancers” while regular magic users still get the moniker “mage.”

sadreality , in TIL The name "flashlight" came from the first lights that could only briefly illuminate because the batteries couldn’t hold a charge for long periods of time

Interesting but why Zelenskiy as thumbnail lol

AphoticDev , in TIL the FBI struggled to hire hackers because of a rule that required applicants to have not smoked marijuana for the past 3 years
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

So I guess they’re not forcing the ones they catch to become slaves for the government to avoid jail time anymore?

Chickenstalker , in TIL yawning is observed in almost all vertebrate animals and is "contagious" across species. There is no consensus on why yawning occurs.
