I was grandfathered into their oldest pricing model back when Google Play Music was at its peak, and now they’re hiking my price too. I’ll be glad to see the subscription go and use revanced, but I need a better music streaming platform that’s 10 dollars or less

Wait, we’re losing our grandfathered pricing?! Bummer. I guess I’ll give Tidal another shot. Their service was nice and I like that they pay the artist the most compared to the other popular platforms. I didn’t like their “radios”/auto playlists but maybe they’ve upgraded their algorithms since three years ago.

I was a Google Play Music user too. I mainly used it to host my iTunes music library and music was a lot cheaper to buy vs iTunes and Amazon.

I ended up switching to Apple Music. Its not bad, but its not great either. I just needed another place to host my iTunes library

I got by for a long time using a YouTube playlist and Vanced. Might want to look into YouTube Revanced, it’s a patch for the YT app that deletes ads and adds some extra features.

Why? It gives the creators more money than watching ads and you get no ads on Smart TVs etc.

I mean yes you can watch youtube with vanced, Sponsorblock etc pretty much without ads everywhere, but because I hate ads and did that I like supporting the channels without having to manage a ton of little donations

I hate corpos, so I do what I can to not support them. The creators that I watch I donate directly to or purchase their merch/products. That supports them far more than the fractions of a cent that me watching ads or paying for a premium service gives them.

the issue is the creators people follow are often only on YouTube (it’s the only platform that makes sense for long form content which is all I watch). I think there’s a few smaller ones like Rumble but that’s like lemmy to reddit (at this point), there’s just not the depth of content there particularly around niche communities. youtube has us by the balls and they know it, and while I firmly believe eventually a competitor will reach critical mass, its a while off

I hated the transition. Tried every service afterwards and stuck with Amazon for a year or so until a bug on their end wiped all my recommendations and playlists. I gave YouTube music a shot and am pleasantly surprised by how far it’s come. The auto generated playlists are spot on to my tastes and all my playlists from the GPM days were there. They fixed a lot of the UI problems too. For me, the price isn’t bad at all for what they offer.

I’d say stick with what works for you. I will say that NewPipe does not even touch your Google account. You have to go to takeout to export your playlists and then import them into NewPipe. Since I’ve found all three (for all three platforms), the only way I watch YouTube now is through them. Ads are a foreign concept to me now.

I looked up NewPipe on the Google Play Store. First, there’s, like, four different options that are suspiciously similar. I click the one with 4.4 stars (others had, like, 2), and it says it collects and shares location data with third parties, and this data can’t be deleted?

YouTube is by far the mose watched platform in my house. The only person that doesn’t watch YouTube regularly is my wife. If I could get any way to use the AdBlock version on my TV I would do it. But I can’t. So I pay for it.

Nope, it is sn app that can play videos from youtube, peertube, and z few others. You don’t log in to youtube, but you can create subscription lists and playlists and everything. Only the youtube algorithm doesn’t work on you.

Ok, I went to the website, downloaded the app from there. Samsung and or Android warned me about it, but I went ahead. Seems to be legit, it just takes forever to load anything. Feeds, thumbnails, starting a video all take a long time.

My one guess is that 1.1.1.1 is interfering?

Edit: yes, that was it. I allowed Newpipe to bypass 1.1.1.1 DNS and it’s loading just as fast as YouTube itself now. Should have tried that before posting here.

Just so that everyone knows:

Dont download patched apks from the internet. Instead, install the patcher from github and a vanilla youtube APK to patch it yourself.

There are no official sites providing revanced APKs and the unofficial sited may contain unwanted software.
