This is a super simple setup, the elevator has both a north and a south door. but the ground floor (0) only has a north exit meaning that they never added a ground south floor. but they wanted aesthetics over functionality so instead of having an empty button slot and moving everything up, they changed the number so the south wing starts at 1 and north wing at 0

Pika ,

so far I’ve seen some bots post articles that setup some pretty decent conversation. I am slightly annoyed that it floods but, I just keep my sorting by stuff that’s hot and it’s usually good.

The steam main Window is now also the launch window, thus you cannot browse steam while launching a game. (lemmy.world)

Launching a game means that the entire Steam Window fades and it will become entirely unusable until the game starts. That is not a separate startup window, thats just an embedded element inside the main one. If you accidentally click outside, the game startup gets canceled....

Pika ,

the new steam sucks hardcore. I hate everything to do with it. It’s buggy, it lags, you can’t use themes, it crashes randomly, it memory leaks. Heck it was suck bad performance that they pushed the beta back multiple times before finally releasing it and its still not ready.

Pika ,

I’m not sure how I did it but, my steam opens in windowed mode, It might be grandfathered from the previous UI though cause I don’t see where I could have set that up.

Minecraft's recent EULA changes place heavy restrictions on Java servers (twitter.com)

Just spreading awareness about whatever the fuck Mojang thinks they’re doing. Given their enforcement of the EULA, or the lack thereof, this probably isn’t going to have as huge of an impact, but I think it’s still something worth talking about....

Pika , (edited )

judging a quick read of that, it seems most if not all of the changes only apply to commercial use(thankfully), they even specify it under the personal use area,so that makes me feel a little better. That being said I made it to no name brands such as mods with branded automobiles before my ADHD brain lost interest as well

Pika ,

I had never heard of it so i just went and tried it, the mods for it are super buggy but, base game was super flushed out and functional. It’s not minecraft, so it’s a little to get used to but, it works amazingly.

Pika ,

the fact that google is charging employees more than motels on the side of the road is surprising, 99 a night is still about 3k a month. granted i know its for temporary until the employee can relocate but, not much of an incentive.

Pika ,

oof that is rough, yea motels cost between 75-120 a night around here depending on cost. I guess it’s better than I thought it would be lol

Pika ,

this brought me back to my MW2(classic) days, having to speed change classes before I respawned

Pika ,

being devils advocate here, they probably are blinded by the reports of workers who are inefficient at remote work. I want remote work as much as the next guy, I am deeply passionate for it; but I can see why management teams would want inhouse. Easier to monitor and punish mentor the under-performers if you are physically present in the building. The higher ups don’t generally care about stats, they only care about what issues are being brought to their plate/causing more work for them… and the underperforming workers are a pretty big additional work for them.

Pika ,

with WFH it’s generally harder to analyze what areas the worker is struggling, and it also lacks the one on one with the worker. You can still technically do a video call or screen-share but, it’s harder to monitor the worker to verify that said mentorship is taking effect, without compromising the privacy of the worker and the system at hand. It’s possible to do but, you lose many tools such as constant monitoring of multiple under-performers at once that make it harder to actually monitor and mentor. This is without including that remote work is much harder to actually monitor work activity vs work productivity until it is too late(end of day, missed deadline, etc).

Pika ,

I tried jerboa, I didn’t like it. Seems to basic and didn’t really function for me(was likely due to actual server issues rather than app issues though). I’m now on connect and pretty content though.

Pika ,

Considering a lot of gore content is illegal in places such as the US, it’s possible they the tag doesn’t exist anymore on most places to avoid promoting the content.

Pika ,

ok, let me clarify. Obscenity is not protected under the first amendment. Accidental gore/maiming is maybe allowed, at most it’s a grey area until its concidered obscene, however once it hits the obscenity level the supreme court has declared that it is a violation of federal law and therefore illegal. It’s a huge reason that many sites actively take the content down and have it against TOS. Most enforcement/regulation with the standing is generally in relation to minors, but it isn’t exclusive to minors.

Pika ,

I’m concerned at the security implications of this. I haven’t read into it but, with the world moving towards facial recognition/face locks. I’m not sure how wise it is to allow people to do a detailed outline of your eye and face.

Pika ,

I hope someone with an old rust bucket parks in one of those driver spaces

Pika ,

I’ve been told if you do all four insurance might be more apt to cover it, best to do one to three of them that way it might not be covered

Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken (www.reuters.com)

Tesla has consistently exaggerated the driving range of its electric vehicles, reportedly leading car owners to think something was broken when actual driving range was much lower than advertised. When these owners scheduled service appointments to fix the problem, Tesla canceled the appointments because there was no way to...

hard pass on hybrids. Every hybrid I’ve known if has had super pricey transmission/clutch issues. I’ve had too much bad luck with them.

I would go full EV or full gasoline/diesel before going hybrid

Pika ,

I mean they are currently /ok/ but since it’s only samsung devices it bounces off instead of every android device it doesn’t have the versatility that the Apple airtags have (where it bounces off any apple device and any android device with the app), so if it’s between one of the other I would go with air tag since you can still use them on android (with a secondary app) but as always YMMV since it’s made for Apple devices

that being said, might be changing with googles support for trackers!

Pika , (edited )

Yeah I see no way this happens, if they wouldn’t involve themselves in Microsoft being a monopoly /anticompetitive they sure as hell ain’t going to combat Amazon

Pika ,

I see why people use downvoting this way, especially since that was the norm on reddit which a good portion of the base fled from, I find the same issue I had with downvotes on reddit to apply here as well though. I try to advocate down votes to be not out of personal opinion, but a reflection that the content is either useless or harmful to the existing conversation. This allows posts that are actually useful and contribute to the discussion to exist even if they are unpopular to peoples opinion. Just because you don’t like the post, doesn’t mean the post isn’t true or useful, which is why I find that form of downvoting ideology to be harmful overall.

That being said, I would find the parent comment you replied to as constructive to the conversation…Up until they started egging people on with “is getting people super angry” I wouldn’t call this being downvoted for not agreeing, I would call it being downvoted for not being constructive to the post at hand(as there’s no need to actively try to get people to rage at you with a post like that)

Pika ,

I think it’s more likely he googled “Call of Duty Username prefix generator” then shaved the duplicates XD

Pika ,

I am actually debating canceling my yt premium sub over it and im going to twitch turbo, I have been progressively using yt less and less anyway and to be honest, the new price point (which was 13.99 for me) is not worth the benefits it provides. mobile queuing can be used via playlist or watch later, adverts are annoying but avoidable with new found apps approaching. Downloading for offline use is a joke, it barely has ever worked for me. Picture in Picture mode is buggy and for the most part I don’t use it. This combined with the absolute crap recommendation system they have had the last few years(like seriously its all either stuff in my watch history or stuff that is unrelated to anything I watch). I’m sure they are just following every other company but, it might just push me off lol

Also to clarify your nuking account thing. I expect you signed up via either apple subscriptions or google play subs, both of which take a chunk out of the money given. So that might be what is going on with the price diff.

Pika ,

yea, but internal to internal charges are sadly not uncommon. so they would still do a charge.

Pika ,

I never really thought of that movie in ages, was the first 3d movie I’ve ever watched, I loved it. I never though about comparing it to SAO or Log Horizon. It’s interesting to think about

Pika ,

despite 3 different links, not one of them worked on connect, sadness lol

Pika ,

this one worked!

Pika ,

wait musk is pulling a card from Facebook Meta’s playbook? interesting

Pika ,

huh, interesting the more you know. An app that is universal for all common things would be nice but, Twitter would need a MASSIVE overhaul to do anything like that. Facebook has a better chance of doing that just due to how broad it is(still wouldn’t use it cause Facebook), twitter is far too limited for something like that

Pika ,

I wouldn’t be against multiple universal apps for Freedom of choice tbh. Like there’s already matrix which is attempting to do something like that for chats with bridges, and the there’s also beeper which uses the same framework iirc

Pika , (edited )

I’m not 100% sure where the confusion is coming from so I apologize in advance for the ignorance. Yea universal as in you can do everything there. I’m not sure how the term universal would mean there can only be one. It would be counter productive to the freedom of the internet to have it that way. I would prefer to be able to access everything from one app. Would save a buttload of space on my phone and would make things universally easier by having the same interface across everything. I would prefer it to not be twitter since the platform sucks, but I wouldn’t be against something like that and thats the wonderfulness of the internet, you can have more than one service doing the same thing.

The term universal and distinct are not mutual, unless I misunderstood the definition of universal somewhere

A good example of this would be pideon, I used to use that as a service to be able to access XMPP, IRC, Skype (back in the day), and google chat. Universal app that could be used for all my social needs, without having a monopoly.

CHROME (google) is planing to implement DRM (kinda) into their browser (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

looks like rendering adblockers extensions obsolete with manifest-v3 was not enough so now they try to implement DRM into the browser giving the ability to any website to refuse traffic to you if you don’t run a complaint browser ( cough…firefox )...

Pika ,

this is why I never got into matrix. I don’t actually know how lol, the page doesn’t list servers available and i don’t really want to just spin up my own just for myself

Pika ,

Looking into Matrix…(again apparently because I had an account already logged in on element) I hate to say it but, I can’t forsee myself ever using that. It’s waaay too complicated while simplistic at the same time. There is a permission system but, this is more similar to IRC then discord. Graphics wise it’s super basic and easy to use, but I can forsee that being way too much of a pain to moderate or administrate on.

Pika ,

I apperently had tried element out using a matrix.org account at some because when I went on the client I was already logged in, I vaugly remember it but it didn’t really give a great first impression.

anyway, I decided to look around it again to give it another shot, I really don’t think it’s a good idea to relate it to Discord, the documentation itself says it’s more similar to IRC than Discord. It lacks fairly basic features that you would expect to see in a current day chat service, for permissions example: they do have basic permissions and they’ve stated that more coming but there’s no way to fine tune them for example if you want to give the ability to delete message you need to give the ability for every permission under the below the redact message permission (which is hard set at perm level 50 if I remember right). This in my opinion is actually worse than IRC in that matter, as with IRC I could fine tune someone to have Channel topic editing permissions and the ability to hide that they are there but I didn’t necessarily need to give them disconnect or Banning permissions at the same time and visa versa.

I’m sure it’s perfect for some pieple but, I’ll stick with modern day implementations till they give a bit more control, but I’m pretty certain with the current spec it’s not possible at this time

Pika ,

I expect there probally is, I only briefly looked at the integration system and the bridge system nothing really caught my eye but it would make sense that since they’re looking for more IRC feel that most of your basic moderation perms would be through a bot of some sort kinda like how chanserv was

Pika ,

Ain’t that the truth, IRC was arguably the easiest service for me to set up, it had all the defaults basically set I think I only have the change one or two settijgs and open the ports, anything else was optional and it came with all the bells and whistles (of what you can get out of IRC… lol)

Pika ,

same… I didn’t know hypercanes were even hypoteticallized, super concerning

LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for “Home as a Service” (www.theregister.com)

LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for “Home as a Service”::Subscription fatigue is a thing and regulators are circling, but Korean giant reckons you’re ready to cough up after buying hardware

Pika ,

this change will solidify that I will never buy an LG product if they all have that shit

Pika ,

This post alone just told me that I am never buying an LG washer or dryer, that is fucking stupid. you can:t change the settings without being connected to the internet? Yea hard pass

Pika ,

sounds like an easy chargeback claim if that’s the case, “service not rendered/doesn’t exist anymore” might lose the acct out of it but who really cares at this point

Pika ,

instance based awards only though, as of would be hard to control award manipulation from private lemmy servers thay are federated

Pika ,

apple does this but, it’s outlawed by the same regulation that this is. Batteries must be easily accessible and there must not be software restrictions for them

Pika ,

I mean this is what teslas PR email does, or is it Twitter… it’s one of those lol

Pika ,

According to the support Community this was fixed about an hour and a half ago, but I continued to have issues I had to manually log out again and log back in to fix it

Pika ,

sadly with the increasing DRM protections, the legality of it isn’t as clear anymore. Breaking a protected standard is still illegal, which in my opinion is really stupid because if it was for archival purposes from something you own, I feel it should be in the same category as self repair/right to repair acts.

Pika ,

I limited my shopping on Amazon the last few years. Too many “deals” that are the same during prime day as off. Like I was looking at a set of weights, was 199 now 99, they have been 99 for the last month now, the “deal” is now changed to “prime day exclusive” and price stayed the same. Yea… definitely prime day exclusive… definitely worth actually browsing the platform for these sales.
