How much did photography "steal" painter jobs ?
With all the fuzz about IA image “stealing” illustrator job, I am curious about how much photography changed the art world in the 19th century....
Why aren't there more worker co-ops?
Even when I was living in a very liberal area, there were only a small handful of stores that advertised as worker co-ops. It’s funny too because those co-op stores were all incredibly popular and successful, so I don’t understand why they are so comparatively rare? The organizational structure seems simple to maintain, and...
How to find communities in fediverse without getting spammed with offensive porn?
How is a fediverse user supposed to find communities? I can’t find a way to search across the fediverse, which pretty much kills the concept IMO. I was browsing All via Lemmy.world - Mlem - iOS and my feed is half anime porn, with some pictures depicting underage and others not blurred as NSFW....
Can Lemmy posts be indexed by Google or other search engines?
One of the best things about reddit was looking for answers or other users with the same problem as you, and since Google didn’t really help with that anymore and instead insisted on giving you business results, the best practice was to put your search terms in followed by ‘reddit’ and you’d find your answer.
if the total fertility rate drops and stays below global replacement rate, will humans disappear?
After watching this video I am left with this question....
Are there foods that dogs can safely eat but humans can't?
No, not talking about their own shit or vomit, har de har. I mean how dogs can’t have chocolate, can’t eat grapes. Are there things it’s no big deal for them but would be toxic for us.
Why would the NA beer industry standardize on a bottle shape that's grotesquely inconvenient, topples with minimal force, and doubles the required volume to ship?

What do you do with your time after leaving Reddit?
I am trying to cut out Reddit from my life but I’m always ending up re-installing it because I simply don’t know what do with my time. We have two small kids (1y and 3y) so I can’t simply just read more, train more, play games, watch TV, etc....
What's the vaporization temperature of mouse urine?
Let’s say I hypothetically had some mice pee in some plastic components that cannot be properly cleaned in any realistic way. Is it possible to heat it up to “cook off” the mouse pee nastiness without actually melting the plastic?
How does data sent over the internet know where to go?
I saw a map of undersea internet cables the other day and it’s crazy how many branches there are. It got me wondering - if I’m (based in the UK) playing an online game from someone in Japan for example, how is the route worked out? Does my ISP know that to get to place X, the data has to be routed via cable 1, cable 2 etc....
What's the food young children make in other cultures?
In the US it’s not crazy for kids maybe as young as 6 to make themselves sandwiches like a PB&J/Ham & Cheese either if parents have an emergency, or to take to lunch for themselves because parents didn’t have time. (Or you know, they’re neglectful)...
How can we see the Milky Way if we are inside of it?
Is there something like F-droid, but for windows software?

Why do Americans keep falling for the Democrat and Republican scare mongering and propaganda?
Is it due to what we eat, our social media, the alphabet propaganda machine (most likely)?...
Is it wrong to sell your Reddit account?
Just asking for a friend…
Why GitHub?
I can’t help but notice most (all I’ve seen anyway) of the federated projects are hosted on GitHub. GitLab is also not federated, but can be self hosted and has at least discussed it....
Does lemmy have porn?
Why are techies so averse to funding the arts?
As the guilded age came to a close in the 1900s, railroad barons, industrialists and banking kingpins put money into the arts in order to launder their image and legacies. We see no such thing today. Why is that?...

How do trees know?
How does a tree (or any plant, really), know to evolve to produce a delicious fruit or a poison berry, a seed inside an impenetrable shell, or invent a type of flying machine, in order to reproduce? (Each of these examples exists in my backyard)...
