Just let them in and stay ffs. Why are we turning away people seeking the American dream, as dead as that feels to me.

tallwookie ,

the barriers to legal immigration are significantly lower in America than in most other countries. just immigrate legally, it’s a simple concept.

naught ,

You have to be joking. We are literally shooting at people trying to cross the border. The “legal” routes are dogshit apps which do not even work properly leaving families in limbo waiting at the border. The “legal” routes can take years while you and your family starves or suffers or is even killed. Why don’t you do some research and tell me the easiest most practical way to become a citizen? Or at least get a green card.

ryathal ,

Do some research on other countries. The US is actually really open. Some countries have point systems, so you need some combination of enough assets, a degree, an in demand profession, a family lineage to the country, speaking the main language, or having a job offer.

Even if they don’t have a point system many countries require documentation that you won’t be a financial burden on the country to get in.

naught ,

I know very well what other countries’ policies are. To say the US has a good system because its less terrible or restrictive isn’t a good argument. It’s still a nightmare for those seeking asylum or otherwise

tallwookie ,

yet you’re unwilling to actually cite anything that it’s actually easier to legally immigrate to other countries.

naught ,

What? I am not making that point. It is harder in many places. That is not a valid argument for the current US system which is slow and cruel.

atzanteol ,

“Lower” isn’t the same as “low”

pigup ,

It’s not easy. It takes money and status to come here.

bluGill ,

More people try to immigrate legally every year than the US allows. You need a lawyer and many years to immigrate legally, that isn't easy.

The only easy path is if a close family member marries an American and lives as a married couple for 20 years (you can divorce after that, but for 20 years immigration will check to ensure you really are acting like a married couple, you can fail their checks because of not doing things other married couples don't either). I wouldn't call this easy, between finding someone you could marry and live with and all the checks, but it is still easiest.

Most of those countries nobody wants to immigrate to. The ones that people do want to immigrate to, the US is pretty middle of the road when it comes to being able to legally live here. The US is one of the easier ones to get citizenship in though (still difficult).

And no, it is not just a matter of “just do it legally.” The majority that would like to come here are not able to do it legally within their lifetime. Most of them only qualify for the lottery and only a fraction of those actually get through because the process is so bureaucratic and prone to errors.

"Just immigrate legally"

My guy, without a sponsor or family, you are quite literally playing the lotto.

tallwookie ,

1:200 odds are pretty good compared to other lotteries you have to pay into.

surewhynotlem ,

So because we’re doing well we shouldn’t try and do better.

UristMcHolland ,

Simple in theory, sure.

But it’s not that simple.

tallwookie ,

not wasting 19 minutes to find out the not simple answer

All of these plans need a stoic dude in glasses to slowly adjust them after every idea and go, “Yeah, then what? They walk all the way back up here and we do it again?”
