This is why charging a juvenile for taking a nude of themselves with creating CSAM is the dumbest shit ever…

It gives these kids an actual valid reason to not tell anyone. And the blackmailers can ask for worse than just money. It could lead to actual physical abuse in some cases.

Without that law, anyone being blackmailed could just turn to the authorities without a care in the world.

SheeEttin ,

Well, except for the care about the shame of having done it.

givesomefucks ,

As a former teen boy, I would give zero fucks if the cops saw a pic of my dick so that some catfish who tried to blackmail me would go to prison.

But it wouldn’t need every victim to go forward, just a few and this wouldn’t even be a thing because the risk/reward is complete dog shit for the scammers.

Right now they know that their victim going to the cops is unlikely because they’d have to confess to a serious crime. So the scammers worst case scenario is they just don’t get money.

Read the article, the director of the freaking FBI is on to this and cooperates with foreign governments to catch the scammers. It wouldn’t take many coming forward before the old inheritance scams started looking better for the scammers.

All they need is victims to come forward, and this would accomplish it

For real. I’d be more worried about what the police would do to my kid than anything they might be able to do to catch the blackmailer. Reporting it is a zero-sum game. And the district attorneys are responsible for this being the case, 100%.

I can never understand what kind of twisted person you have to be to blackmail kids like this. Utterly depressing that we have to live on the same planet as people who can justify such a thing to themselves.

It's easy to dehumanise the victims when the scammers are thousands of miles away and communicating only by text.

Empricorn ,

If your suffering victim has already paid you and you encourage them to kill themself, you’re not dehumanizing anyone, you’re just evil. Pieces of garbage scammers, I hope they rot in prison…

Honestly this is yet another reason to distinguish between photographic images/live video of a minor, and the disgusting but necessary evil of fictional material. With scams like this and new AI generation capability, I’m scared that even kids younger than 13 who haven’t even been forced to be involved in that photographic/video crap will be blackmailed using only their face and black market image AIs that draw on dark net CSAM.

By making fictional content legal while conversely increasing penalties for adults who exploit or attack REAL children in ANY way, not just sexually (because let’s be honest, this scam, kiddy porn and a lot of physical non-sexual violence towards children by strangers is about exploiting kids for the money and nothing else) you deprive the black market of material for an AI-based extortion plan.

The only other option is to make it illegal for anyone under 18 to post content on the internet at all, which would kill Lemmy and the fediverse, big tech, VR, online gaming and modern education.

This is one of the things generative AI is going to inadvertently help significantly.

The plausible deniability of leaked nudes in an era where every face can be turned into a salacious nude photo is going to make any leverage disappear. As well as most demand/market for personal leaks.

Of course, on the flip side generative AI is going to feed into the most aggressive online scamming increase we’ve ever seen, so ups and downs.

Teenage boys won’t be exposed to repercussions for their exposures, but grandma is going to give all her money away to a voice cloned scammer that’s using dynamic guilt tripping to lead to a conversion.

It’s going to be an interesting next decade or so.

mateomaui ,

This is why I deliver my nudes in person.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Oh that explains last night. I was wondering about the nude man on my front porch silently staring at me.

Did you get home alright?

mateomaui ,

sorry, wrong house

I've made a big effort over a long period of time, starting early, to make sure that my kids know that people lie, on and off the internet. That random strangers appropaching them online or in person should be considered with a healthy level of suspicion, and that people lie to you in order to trick you into giving them something you wouldn't otherwise want to give. Often, that's money (or something of monetary value), but it could be sexual, it could be getting you to commit a crime on their behalf (or taking responsibility for a crime you didn't commit), it could be your vote, it could be simply to exercise power over you.

People lie, and it is a disservice to avoid that fact.

Please don't freeboot the entire article in the post body. WP can very easily send a C&D to the LemmyWorld admins over this sort of thing.

If you want to help users bypass paywalls, use a mirroring/archiving service that does this, and post a link to that. But posting the entire text of the article is just asking for trouble.

archomrade ,

financial sextortion

That seems like a really unnecessarily silly way of saying “blackmail”

If someone threatened to show my family a naked picture of myself, especially at that age, I would just laugh. Ain’t like they haven’t seen me naked plenty IRL.

Thank you for loudly telling the world you lack empathy.
