More than 171,000 people traveled out-of-state for abortions last year

Some 171,300 patients traveled out-of-state for abortions last year, new data estimates from the Guttmacher Institute show. State abortion bans that took effect in the post-Roe era have severely curbed access to reproductive care across the U.S.

More than one million clinician-provided abortions took place in states without a total ban in 2023 — the first full year after Roe v. Wade was overturned. That’s the highest number in more than a decade.

Out-of-state travel for abortions, including for the procedure or to obtain abortion pills, more than doubled from 2020 to 2023.

Treczoks ,

Wait until they have to move to a civilized country for that instead. And see what else is possible outside the US.

Rich people have always been able to get abortions in the U.S. and they don’t even have to do that.

Poor people generally cannot afford to emigrate.

Treczoks ,

I’m not talking about emigration. But you know that Canadas biggest pharmacy is right behind the US Border and has the size (and turnover) of a supermarket? If things go further downhill, the Canadians (or Mexicans) will offer affordable medical care for women in need.

But you know that Canadas biggest pharmacy is right behind the US Border and has the size (and turnover) of a supermarket?

Which is fine if you have a car and the time off work to drive from, say, Beaumont, Texas to Canada (apparently a one-day drive).

You’re essentially saying the solution is a two-tiered system where women who can afford to travel can still get abortions.

Treczoks ,

I was just saying that there would be solutions. I never talked about affordability. And if those who cannot afford to survive in the current political climate keep making the same mistake in the voting booths, nobody can help you.

You do know that less than 100% of Texans voted Republican, right? In fact, it’s not all that far from 50/50.

www.270towin.com/states/Texas

So maybe don’t blame women who get pregnant and don’t want to be in a state that has banned abortion when they may not have even voted for the Republicans who did it.

Treczoks ,

If all those women in Texas voted with their own personal wellbeing in mind, you would not have a Republican problem. And therefor no abortion crisis.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And so because of that, blame the women who didn’t vote for Republicans as well? That black fast food worker in Dallas who has never voted Republican in her life? Her fault?

That’s quite the victim-blaming mentality you have there.

Treczoks ,

I don’t blame the victim. I’m just telling you that problems like that need fixing from the inside. I am not the inside.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is literally blaming the victim:

If all those women in Texas voted with their own personal wellbeing in mind, you would not have a Republican problem. And therefor no abortion crisis.

You blamed all women in Texas.

Also, Texas is incredibly gerrymandered. Voting won’t fix the problem.

texastribune.org/…/texas-redistricting-elections/

There is no good fix at present. That’s a sad truth.

Treczoks ,

Voting won’t fix the problem.

If you think like that, you already lost.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You read that article quickly. Within 30 seconds of me posting it, in fact.

Treczoks ,

I am already well aware that Republican states of the US are heavily gerrymandered. The GOP would no longer be an issue in most places without that.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But you think that somehow just getting out the vote will fix the issue?

Wow where did they get that number? I believe it but that’s a very specific number

The Guttmacher Institute is a pretty high level research institution, specializing in this type of thing. I haven’t reviewed the quoted study, but I think it has to be pretty close.

Mouselemming ,

Since the reason you’d travel would be to access an abortion provider, having abortion providers ask patients their home address or just whether they’ve traveled from out of state would be a good start.

555 ,

Keep voting Republican and that number will go up.

OsaErisXero ,

Until it abruptly hits zero

555 ,

It won’t hit zero. It just won’t have any more reporting.

Kit ,

My neighbor has a yard sign along the lines of “Roe vs Wade didn’t start abortions, it just made them safe.” And it’s in the shape of a coat hanger.

I’m not a demographic that has to worry about pregnancy but that hit me hard.
