Which is probably less than a percent of what they owe if the IRS would successfully unravel all those Delaware, Kitts and Nevis, Bermudas, etc. “company” structures.

hperrin ,

Delinquent millionaires is such a great phrase.

Habahnow ,

The article doesn’t seem to indicate the ROI of the influx of new money to the IRS vs extra money received because of this influx. Only reason I care about ROI with this agency is 1) only real agency that makes money. 2) IRS had indicated before that they can generate something like 7 USD per 1 USD they are given for funding and I’d like to see if that plays out.

Regardless, I’m glad te IRS is getting the funding it needs to go after the rich.

SeaJ ,

They basically get an extra $6 billion each year over the next decade. So this would be a decent chunk of that. They have also recovered hundreds of millions in fraudulent PPP loans. They are also pushing to recover $29 billion in back taxes from Microsoft. A lot of those things they would not have been able to do before.

Habahnow ,

Anywhere where I can read about this in particular?

Do you think they could find out other people were committing similar crimes? And that those people are also rich? Maybe elected officials even? Hmm…

They aren’t interested in crime. They aren’t interested in law. They aren’t interested in policy. They are obsessed with punishment.

squiblet ,

They’re obsessed with their own power and money imo. Prisons make money, and keep the proles in line using fear. That’s the whole reason for the drug war - Nixon etc wanted to harm their political enemies, as in leftists and minorities, while also grifting money from the government and increasing authoritarianism.

just_change_it ,

you don’t understand, after they gut the irs funding they’ll replace all the management positions with politically chosen replacements, then force investigations to solely target their political rivals. No resources left to investigate their buddies.

That’s the strategy now. All competitors are ‘crooks’.

There will always be some perspective from which the impact of anything can be minimized.

What is the significance of your life, when viewed from the scale of the universe? It’s utterly meaningless from this perspective. However, your existence is quite significant to that spider you squished.

Jonas Salk created a polio vaccine that saved countless lives, but whyd he even bother when there are so many other causes of mortality?

    squirmy_wormy ,

K…so cool. If you’re pro-big-usa-military, then you gained 6 hours. If you’re pro-a-bunch-of-other-govt-programs, they hey! Congratulations! There’s another half billion

    themeatbridge ,

Annual revenue is roughly $4.71 trillion for FY23. I can’t be sure if that includes the $500 million, but if we were to add it to the total revenue, it would be $4.7105, or roughly one tenth of one percent of the total. It’s also roughly 1-2% of the amount rich people owe that they aren’t paying.

Imagine if you ate at a restaurant with a large group, and when the bill came, it was $14,700. Everyone ponied up, but you were short on what you owed by $100. So you say, “let me run to my car because I have some extra money there.” You come back in with a dollar and two quarters.

Should we be excited? Is that a significant portion of what you owe? Is that a significant portion if the bill?

    businessinsider.com/rich-people-tax-evasion-owe-b…

    blandfordforever ,

Its a good start! Lets send them all digging through their cars. Especially when we know that each of these people actually has far more than a few coins that fell between the seats.

    ohitsbreadley ,

Fuck that, let’s just repossess their Lambos, Ferraris, Bugattis and whatever other gold plated platinum bullshit they own and sell it.

Why are we asking for loose change?

    themeatbridge ,

No, it’s not a good start. This isn’t fucking day one of taxes existing. Tax fraud is theft from everyone else. They owe all of it. Not 1%, not 1.5%, not 2%. They are deep in the hole, and have been for decades. This is 98% continuing tax fraud. A thief that only takes 98% of your wallet is not starting down the path to righteousness.

    blandfordforever ,

Haha. Well, I agree with you. I think they should pay 100%. I’m saying that its good that the needle is moving.

    squirmy_wormy ,

So you’re complaining that the rich are starting to pay their taxes and we gained half a billion them.

    themeatbridge ,

I’m complaining that the rich aren’t paying their taxes, and they are pretending that pocket change is a good start.

    squirmy_wormy ,

On a report of the rich beginning to pay their taxes, you are complaining that they aren’t paying their taxes.

    themeatbridge ,

That’s my fucking point! THIS ISN’T A REPORT THAT THE RICH ARE BEGINNING TO PAY THEIR TAXES!! This is a report that the rich are continuing to get away with the overwhelming majority of their tax fraud.

No it isn’t, it’s a trick to make people think progress is being made so they don’t do something drastic.

    deur ,

This is a braindead take, lol

    queermunist ,
    @queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

The IRS doesn’t have to unveil back taxes paid by millionaire households. They do it for a reason. Why do you think that is?

    squirmy_wormy ,

Because for the first time in a long time, they got proper funding to do this task. That funding is now back under the gun, so any progress they made is evidence towards or against it continuing.

    queermunist ,
    @queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, i.e. they’re trying to trick people into thinking progresses is being made. They’re presenting their nothingburger as some kind of win because they need a propaganda victory so people don’t do something drastic.

    squirmy_wormy ,

Reporting progress isn’t a trick. It’d be a trick if that number wasn’t true.

They equally could have said “we got 3.50 from em, everyone is following the rules”. Would that be a trick if that’s what happened?

    queermunist ,
    @queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Framing numbers and statistics in a misleading way is a trick. $500 million, by itself, means nothing.

Treasury: Top 1 percent responsible for $163 billion in unpaid taxes

Americans failed to pay $688 billion in income taxes in 2021

Without this crucial context, people are tricked into thinking the IRS is making lots of progress. In reality they’ve caught less than 1% 😂

    squirmy_wormy ,

I feel like you didn’t read the article. This is what basically happened:

    • IRS got funding
    • a bit later, IRS says "hey! We got 500 million back so far"
    • here comes you: “it’s a trick!”

They didn’t use stats or any framing here. They just reported progress.

If you are being genuine at all, you are grossly misunderstanding the situation and additionally your arguments don’t make sense in the grand scheme of things: at some point of debt collection, you will collect less than 1%. From there you keep getting more.

    deur ,

Braindead reply as expected. How dare they show what they did with the new funding, its almost like they do need to on some level report on the results of now funding efforts so that they can continue to get said funding. Who knew a government organization would allow for some transparency between them and their government & civilians.

    citrusface ,

I suppose - but like there decades worth of back taxes. 500 is a good start maybe, but we all know they are dodge taxes and being taxed at lower rates than poor an middle classs and you know what there is no point in even talking about it because itll just work me up and I can’t change anything so I’ll just keep focusing on my community instead. Thank you.

That’s the logic they all follow … I don’t own $1 billion … I own $1 million and everyone else just calls it $1 billion and I tell some people to believe it and others to not believe it … it’s all a question of faith and belief … my shareholders believe I have $1 billion but we tell the government to believe that I only own $1 million.

When you have access to millions and billions, you can make anyone believe whatever you want them to believe.

    novibe ,

It’s all really power in the end. Which is why you see many of the most powerful people in the world nowhere near the “Forbes” list. Money is a representative of power under capitalism, but having more money than everyone else isn’t necessary to have power over them.

Case in point Elongated Muskrat. Sure he is powerful enough to destroy one of the biggest social media networks, but he can’t change the system as a whole, and if the system deems him too much of a nuisance he is gone

    Ghostalmedia ,
    @Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Given its $160k a year for an auditor’s salary… maybe $200 when all is said and done with benefits, then $2 million is a solid return on investment. I’ll take it.
