Dagrothus , in 'Trump isn't funding any of us': Co-defendants in Georgia case are struggling with mounting legal bills

“While another ended up spending nearly a week in jail because he initially couldn’t afford to hire an attorney.”

Regardless of context, this sentence is so dystopian and fucked up.

tegs_terry ,

Did he forego the free council?

Pretzilla ,

He was arguing the cost would break him and his family, so I think the issue was that he had too much wealth to have one readily appointed.

tegs_terry ,

So you can be too rich to have a public defender?

Pretzilla ,

The way Miranda rights read: “if you cannot afford an attorney, an attorney will be appointed” just like cop shows teach us.

YoBuckStopsHere , in At Russia's Doorsteps, B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber Of US Air Force Performs Historic Hot Pit Refueling
@YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world avatar

Hot Pit Refueling is essentially combat refueling and rearming of an aircraft for a quick turnaround. The engines are not fully shut down so that ground crews can quickly prep the aircraft to go back up. In combat conditions, this would mean that POL and MUNS teams would join the crew chiefs at a selected location near the runway to complete this task. The aircraft is checked for any mechanical issues and if it has minor combat damage it is repaired quickly (duct tape, replacement panel, chewing gum) and the aircraft returns to the skies.

Something strange is in the water down in Texas.

Gonna backfire big time when the Republicans’ mistresses get prosecuted

dragonflyteaparty ,

Nah, of course their abortions will be ok. Theirs is acceptable and definitely not an abortion while anyone else deserves to be in jail.

QHC , in Police stop Nebraska man for bucking the law with a bull riding shotgun in his car

As a native Nebraskan, I take great offense at the “northeast Nebraska’s biggest city” phrasing. What a weirdly specific way to refer to an otherwise average small town. We’re already a joke, why rub it in and imply Omaha or Lincoln don’t exist?

expr ,

Yep. It has a population of 24,967. As someone who has been there multiple times, it’s quite small. NE Nebraska is just not very populated in general.

over_clox ,

Damn. We need a stock of 25,000 or more…

Buddahriffic , in Texas law aims to punish prosecutors who refuse to pursue abortion cases

Prosecutors: We’re not going to enforce this one either.

CADmonkey ,

Now there’s an interesting thought. They’re going to have to come up with a whole new set of prosecutors.

Otkaz ,

That’s a very different case. Read the actual article. That guy broke a window and was reaching in to try and unlock the door at 3am. The whole thing was caught on a surveillance camera. I think they made the right choice not charging the home owner if those reported facts are accurate.

dogslayeggs , in Alaska board of education votes to ban transgender girls from competing on high school girls teams

Remind me again how many trans girls there are in the Alaska school system… and how many of those are asking to compete in sports?

Morcyphr ,

Idk, maybe zero, maybe 100. What difference does it make? This is a group of people deciding (right or wrong) that this isn’t something they aren’t going to allow.

dogslayeggs ,

The point is that elected officials are spending taxpayer dollars (right or wrong) on something that practically doesn’t exist. It’s like wasting everyone’s time legislating that people with 2 penises aren’t allowed to wear dresses to school. This wasn’t a 5 second vote that just popped up. This was multiple people spending hours discussing this, drafting up the language, voting on it, drafting up the press release (they have to publicize how righteous they are), printing up new rule books for every ref/coach/school, etc.

Morcyphr ,

I don’t disagree. Elected officials/governments are inefficient. But that fact is not unique to this situation. How much taxpayer dollars have been wasted on the federal UFO investigation? My own city government has spent billions (with a B) on addressing problems that don’t exist. Now, I admit, I don’t know what “people with 2 penises” refers to, so maybe you made that up to prove some point?

roguetrick , (edited ) in Texas law aims to punish prosecutors who refuse to pursue abortion cases

Absolutely unenforceable. Protectors don't write such policies even if they personally hold them.
