Fredselfish , in The Senate Judiciary panel will consider ethics rules for the Supreme Court
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

So according to Republicans if the Supreme Court had ethics it would destroy them?

Then they need to be fucking destroyed.

Wooster , in Advocates say new Florida standards require slavery to be taught as 'beneficial'
@Wooster@startrek.website avatar

The Florida Department of Education says the new standards don’t teach that slavery was beneficial.

However, one of the benchmarks (SS.68.AA.2.3) states students will be taught, “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

Either this is some very unfortunate phrasing for establishing that people like Phillis Wheatley are required material (and even then it was less ‘thanks to’ and more ‘in spite of’) or something more nefarious is afoot.

girlfreddy , in Poultry plant blames staffing company for hiring 16-year-old who was killed in workplace accident
@girlfreddy@lemmy.world avatar

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division have launched investigations into the incident, a spokesperson said. Any company found to be in violation could face a federal fine of more than $30,000 per incident.

OSHA’s fines mean nothing. Time to raise them to $1,000,000 per incident, 50% of which go to the families of those injured or killed … then companies might start paying attention.

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

Fuck fines executives and managers and the CEO need to be jailed. Fucking lying bastards.

WookieMunster ,

tbh it’d be hard not to take matters into my own hands if that was one of my family members

TenderfootGungi ,

China had huge fines. People would commit suicide to help their families. They put up nets and stopped the huge payouts to families.

But $30k is absurdly low for a death.

fiat_lux ,

Make it a percentage of the annual worldwide turnover like GDPR. Companies have been very quick to make changes with GDPR's fines of up to €20 million, or up to 4% of the annual worldwide turnover of the preceding financial year.

Nobody is changing anything when killing a child only costs them US$30k and their annual revenue is estimated at US$300 million. They also had a US$7.5 million PPP loan forgiven.

@stopthatgirl7 The problem is people just want to get in the way of me and other Trans people from living our lives, it doesn't help they are literally trying to kill us as well as allies around us. Thank you for all the allies that do stand by our side, we are sorry you have to suffer the same pain for standing up for us being ourselves.

TheDoctorDonna ,

If we don’t stand at your side then all we do is lend legitimacy to their side. We are all brothers and sisters in the fight against hate. We fight together and we either win together or die trying because if we don’t win then this world isn’t worth being a part of anyways. ❤️

    There are places with great LGBTQ laws, there are places with terrible laws, there are places that kill LGBTQ people. A gay person in a progressive city is probably having a better time than a gay person in the middle east, who has to hide to avoid death. You also probably only notice the more vocal LGBTQ people, there’s probably plenty of people you’ve met that are and you don’t know. People like you ruin it for everyone. You’re not treated differently because you’re cishet, you’re treated differently because you are an asshole.

    Not sure what the person you where commenting on said but I agree there is plenty of LGBTQIA+ people that suffer in silence or vocally, I am glad to be who I am and wish to continue being myself. I do not wish upon anyone death nor do I wish them harm. I wish that people would just support people for who they are and live in a more calm peaceful world, but sadly there is hatred and we have to defend our existence to be apart of this world compared to some people.

    Arotrios , in The Senate Judiciary panel will consider ethics rules for the Supreme Court
    @Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

    A good first step, but we need more than a code update when they're ignoring the code as it currently exists. We need an independent non-partisan office that can and will enforce it, and ideally has the capacity to bring criminal charges to justices in violation.

    Jaysyn ,
    @Jaysyn@kbin.social avatar

    " ignoring the code as it currently exists."

    I thought the issue was they aren't covered under those laws.

    Arotrios ,
    @Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

    Yep, exactly. There's an ethics code that Roberts recently published that was a rehash of the non-binding ethics standards that both Thomas and Alioto regularly ignored. This is an update to that code with more oversight in the form of additional required disclosures, but (correct me if I'm wrong - please, I want to be wrong here) I'm not seeing anything about enforcement, or anything about the consequences to a justice for violating these new requirements.

    DrPop ,

    Any non partisan approach will be treated as partisan by the right. I don’t want violence to be the solution to the US issues but it gets harder every day to see any other effective solution.

    MicroWave OP , (edited ) in China doesn’t want a trade war with the US but will retaliate against further curbs, ambassador says
    @MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

    Ambassador Xie Feng criticized U.S. curbs on the sale of microchips and chipmaking equipment to China that were imposed last year by the Biden administration. Beijing has described the measure as part of an effort to “contain” China.

    “China does not shy away from competition, but the definition of competition by the U.S. side I think is not fair,” Xie said Wednesday at the Aspen Security Forum, a security and foreign policy conference in Aspen, Colorado. “The United States is trying to win by keeping China out,” he said, referring to measures to curb U.S. technology sales to Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei over security concerns.

    China earlier this month imposed export curbs on two key metals used in computer chips and solar cells, a measure widely seen as retaliation for the U.S. restrictions on microchips. Earlier this year, Beijing restricted sales of products from Micron Inc., the biggest U.S. producer of memory chips.

    “China does not shy away from competition,

    Bullshit. They want all the money and power, and are simply pissed that their monopoly has been fractured. If Xi hadn’t decided that world domination was a goal for China the nation wouldn’t be in the dire straights it is now.
