gAlienLifeform , in School employee gets 9 years in prison for stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings from district
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

Why is a news station in Texas concerned with an Illinois school district?

HonkTonkWoman ,

The news networks might have the same ownership & are sharing content to keep readers/viewers happy, without having to pay for local reporting.

One of our local news outlets does this because new ownership cut their budget. They use nationwide stories from other partner networks to cover the broadcast time or publication quota.

It kinda sucks living in an area where you can’t get local news.

bamboo ,

In this case, WGN-TV is owned by Nexstar and KCBD is owned by Gray. Probably the case that KCBD has little budget for reporters, so they repackage other stations news (and add their copyright at the bottom) to drive traffic to their site.

HonkTonkWoman , (edited )

Thanks for this. Am I correct in assuming that the deal would likely be made between Gray & Nexstar, rather than directly between WGB & KCBD?

I know when Sinclair wound up owning a second affiliate in my area, the non local stories were the same between the two affiliates. They each had their own staff & local coverage, but the filler was largely the same across both stations.

bamboo ,

It seems like the same author has the same story posted on other Gray stations as well. This is just my assumption but considering the KCBD article says “Copyright 2024 Gray Local Media, Inc. All rights reserved.” it looks like they are just regurgitating other news stories and presenting it as their own on all the Gray affiliates.

HonkTonkWoman ,

Ah, that’s a great catch.

Mouselemming , (edited ) in Donald Trump says he will flee to Venezuela if he loses election [Newsweek]

Can we all chop in for a ticket to send him now, save him the trouble of trying to come up with nicknames for Harris and Walz that they don’t turn into positives? Like “Tampon Tim” …“He’s going to stop the red wave!” Which is how Trump ended up building Walz.

Edit: “chip” in. Economy of course.

Zipitydew ,

I’d rather this become terms for jailing him now. Sounds like a potential flight risk ahead of sentencing for his 34 felony counts.

BruceTwarzen , in Locking up items to deter shoplifting is pushing shoppers online

I don’t think it’s that necessarily. To me it’s things like that: i needed a toaster, and didn’t want to go on Amazon or whatever. I went to a real store and looked at toasters. I found one that fits my needs. The guy who worked there said they fon’t have that one here, but can order it. Neat, that’s just like me ordering it, bun inconvenient and more expensive.

Same thing happened when i needed a new food processor. They didn’t have the one i wanted, so i took the expedition model they had (yeah i’m an idiot). At home i realised that some parts were missing. So back to the store. They had to order a new one after talking to 3 people, and then pick it up again. So instead of ordering it for cheaper and picking it up from my porch, i wasted like 2 hours to take 3 trips to pay extra. And brick and mortar stores are dying? That’s crazy

DJDarren ,

Here in the UK there are a number of bigger chain shops that are effectively running their websites as a kind of Amazon, and it’s really frustrating.

Needed a specific chainring for my bike, so went to Halfords website. They had what I wanted, but not in stock. Meaning, when I bought it, they then ordered it from their supplier to collect a few days later.

I needed a cheap tool for a single job from B&Q. Looked on their website, saw they had one for £3, drove up there to get it. But that one is online only, and the cheapest they keep in store is £6.

It’s like the shittiest bits of in store and online all mashed together, and it sucks.

BruceTwarzen ,

Every time i go to a store and something like that happens i wanna yell: AREN’T YOU WORRIED? YOU ARE THE FIRST ONES WHO GET REPLACED BY A COMPUTER. I hate amazon with a passion, but once i got a empty carton (because someone stole it) it took me one phonecall and 0 proof or anything and they just send it again. I haven’t used their customer support often, but if i did it was super good, compared to when i have to go to the store. Where is the original recipe? Oh it’s opened? This is not how it was packaged originally and so on.

They fear becoming a minority.

They operate under the false beliefs that they already are and that “the libs” bring in foreigners to tilt the vote (which is litteraly not possible) and then “those people get free everything” to feed further into racism. The imaginary bussed in people can’t vote or get benefits but thier social circle says so and thats all they need to believe and repeat it.

The triangle of rhetoric is appeal to authority, appeal to emotion, appeal to logic. They don’t accept any of it thay didn’t come from within thier social group so there is no convinving them and that is why Tronald Dump can say he could shoot somebody on 5th avenue and have them call it fake news despite being recorded.

(Edit x 5 :Why oh why can’t spellcheck just work?)

w3dd1e ,

This is exactly what my neighbor stopped me to tell me recently. About bringing in immigrants to vote and what not. I tried to tell him none of that information is true and show him where and why, but it’s really hard to do without making them dig further into their position.

Anne they are now conditioned believe that any media that doesn’t align with them is fake.

TeoTwawki ,

This is spot on. Delve into the inevitable “Politics and Religion” section of any old school web forum for white guy hobbies and nine times out of ten it’s going to be knee deep in a loud circle jerk consisting of these exact guys whipped into a frenzy over nothing. Look, but don’t touch, it’s like a buzz saw in there.

jumjummy , in SpaceX accused of dumping mercury into Texas waters for years

One of the many reasons he moved to Texas. This is what you get when your state is so “business friendly”. All the complaining about California and the related regulations, but this is what those regulations are supposed to prevent (yes I know there are still plenty of examples of companies polluting in CA).

The Chevron ruling is absolutely a blatant effort to neuter all of these government oversight departments to allow businesses to accelerate their “line go up” polluting efforts.

chiliedogg ,

The thing is California used to do the same thing. They invited everyone to California with business incentives, but eventually they had to start putting in regulations because they realized things had gotten out of control.

Texas today is what California was in the 60s and 70s.

tate , in Hot Summer Threatens Efficacy of Mail-Order Medications | Temperatures inside delivery trucks can reach twice the recommended threshold, but federal rules on drug storage conditions do not apply
@tate@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

“Twice” a temperature, whether in Celsius or Fahrenheit, is a meaningless measure.

silence7 OP ,

Physics-wise, unless it’s Kelvin, yes.

In terms of perception; it’s pretty clear that they’re talking about having a degree measurement that’s twice the numeric value of one in Fahrenheit.

tate ,
@tate@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

But that doesn’t tell anyone anything about how far above the threshold we’re talking about. Could be 2 degrees instead of 1. That’s not much. or it could be 60 degrees instead of 30. That seems important.

wondrous_strange ,

The title says ‘twice the recommended threshold

paraphrand ,

disguy_ovahea ,

The article is more clear than the headline.

But the temperatures inside the cargo areas of delivery trucks can reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, according to drivers — far exceeding the range of 68 to 77 degrees recommended by the national organization that sets standards for drug handling.

anubis119 , in A Wisconsin Tribe Built a Lending Empire Charging 600% Annual Rates to Borrowers

Reminds me of this old commercial I used to see. I think they got shut down for predatory lending IIRC. youtu.be/xgLMgVq4p_E?feature=shared

billiam0202 ,

I remember those! Also the fine print:

The APR for a typical loan of $10,000 is 89.66% with 84 monthly payments of $743.99.

For the curious, that means you pay

$743.99 x 84 = $62,495.16

How the fuck that commercial aired more than once without any sort of federal intervention boggles the mind.

Fedizen , in Donald Trump says he will flee to Venezuela if he loses election [Newsweek]

In context it was more of a stupid joke:

he’ll have to go to venezuela because its safer now that they sent all their criminals to the US
