some_guy , in Michaela DePrince: America's trailblazing ballerina dies at 29

The cause of death has not been given.

I think if she’d been in a car accident or something similar, they’d be forthcoming about it. I think this suggests a terrible illness. Sad news. Didn’t know who she was, but it’s a shame that someone who was truly gifted didn’t get to continue achieving greatness.

Bit by bit! I grew up in Mesa and still pretty much consider AZ home. Glad progressive things are happening.

Bernie_Sandals , in Hawaii wildfire victims made it just blocks before becoming trapped by flames, report says
@Bernie_Sandals@lemmy.world avatar

It found “no evidence” of Hawaii officials making preparations for the wildfire, despite days of warnings that critical fire weather was coming, and that the lack of planning hindered efforts to evacuate Lahaina before it burned.

Having personally experienced a wildfire almost the exact same as this, I really really hope the people of this town can get some accountability, my town barely hit national news and got zero accountability for the failures of the city government.

Maybe we should invite them to Camp David for a singalong

NegativeInf ,

I think we should invite them to La Brea for a dip in the pit.

Weird. Her face looks quite ethnic to me.

Repressed self hatred much?

mosiacmango , (edited )

Shes Jewish. Unsurprisingly, she uses her heritage to be a convenient antisemite when it suits her.

That face has been modeled after at least a dozen botched surgeries and Botox sessions.

cybervseas , in Black man found dead against tree with rope around his neck in NC: 'Not a lynching,' sheriff says

“The young man was not dangling from a tree. He was not swinging from a tree. The rope was wrapped around his neck. It was not a noose. There was not a knot in the rope, so therefore, it was not a lynching here in Vance County.”

Umm, are you saying it wasn’t a lynching on a technicality? Everyone in the south must be Olympic level mental gymnasts. In particular to say there’s no evidence of foul play, at least.

This is like Russian dissidents falling out of windows or down stairs.

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

The legal definitions can be far removed from normal usage: in California “lynching” is when a crowd forcibly removes a suspect from police custody, which historically was often a prelude to what we would recognize as actual lynching (presumably so participants could be charged even if they were stopped before harming the victim). But it’s been used to charge protesters with “lynching” for interfering with the arrest of other protesters.

He said Magee went to a nearby Walmart shortly before he died. That is where he is believed to have bought the rope found around his neck.

If this young man bought the rope himself, if there is evidence of this like surveillance video, that paints this situation in a pretty different light.

Call it what you will, it’s a travesty and should be taken very seriously. But, this is the south, and most southerners love to mince words; especially when it comes to race and politics.
