Phenomephrene , (edited ) in Raskin, Beyer, Welch Bill Would Bring Ranked Choice Voting to Congressional Elections Across America
@Phenomephrene@thebrainbin.org avatar

Legit, if you have never contacted your reps in Congress before to let them know that they should be supporting a bill this is the time to do it. Make as much noise as possible on this one. It has the potential to be more impactful on every issue than most any other bill concerning a single issue. The only contenders I could think of would be campaign finance reforms or possibly some prohibitive action against regulatory capture.

nulluser OP ,

*Gerrymandering raises it’s hand.

There was (still is?) the Fair Vote Act that got introduced and immediately buried in committee for several sessions that addressed both RCV and gerrymandering. I’ve lost hope for it and stopped paying attention to it getting reintroduced.

Phenomephrene ,
@Phenomephrene@thebrainbin.org avatar

RCV will still have an effect on gerrymandered districts. It disrupts the clear funding strategies of lining up behind a single/pair of candidate(s). It becomes either a lot less guaranteed that your funding dollars are being put to good use, or a lot more expensive to make sure that they are. [Caveat: this obviously assumes some depth of a viable candidacy pool in a given district/race.]

carbonari_sandwich ,

And multi-winner ranked choice with larger districts makes gerrymandering much less impactful.

53% is hardly “crushing”.

And the only key metric is the election result.

reddig33 , in It took 50,000 gallons of water to put out Tesla Semi fire in California, US agency says

How much water does it normally take to put out a semi fire? Say a tire fire, engine fire, or the entire contents of a semi in flames? I couldn’t find the answer googling, but I did find that combustion engine semis burn at the rate of 7000 per year.

plattner-verderame.com/…/the-dangers-of-truck-fir…

NotMyOldRedditName , (edited )

I don’t even think this is the right metric to use.

You aren’t putting a lithium battery fire out with water. You’re just keeping it at bay until the energy is all used up. The more energy, the longer it’ll take.

We might need new ways to deal with these fires, but it’s not like we can completely submerge a semi in water.

I wonder how encasing the object in a fire retardant foam would behave, although we gotta think about the toxicity of that too.

Edit: I wonder if you could even calculate the amount of water you’d need to hold it off upfront based off the battery size and current charge.

morbidcactus , (edited )

There’s already tools to deal with lithium fires, class D fire extinguishers, sand and vermiculite. When I worked heavily with lithium non-rechargables we had lithium disaster plans for fires, explicitly in that was alerting fire fighters that it’s a combustible metal fire so they can react accordingly, those fires need to be smothered afaik, water was a big no no.

Generally though, the plan was, escape and enforce a quarantine zone because primary cells give off nasty stuff, if you can drop it in a bucket of vermiculite if it’s out of the containment vessels and pretty much let them do their thing. Then once it seems like it’s done, wait more time to make sure it’s actually safe with 30 minute gas tests, then package them for safe transport.

NotMyOldRedditName , (edited )

The problem though is how do you do that in the middle of nowhere on the highway like in this case? We need something big enough and portable enough. They clearly didn’t have that for this fire.

@Snowpix@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve heard a lot of bitching from a conservative I know that “the debate was unfair because they didn’t fact check Harris and thus it was a sham”

The thing that they were mad Harris wasn’t checked for? Her comments on Trump’s “it will be a bloodbath” comment during one of his rallies. Then they whined about Harris not being clear about her policies despite Trump not answering a single question.

If that’s the best arguments they can come up with to defend Trump’s dumpster fire of a debate performance, then they’re really not having a good time.

nulluser , in Kamala Crushes Trump in Key Metrics in Post-Debate Poll

Well, one potential psychological flaw in her $50k small business tax credit is that it’s only for new small businesses to go towards startup costs.

Existing small businesses that may be struggling can look at that and only see her making it easier for their future competition to get rolling. It’s a net negative for them.

Just about the only people that are going to look at that tax credit and see how it benefits them are people that are already looking into starting a small business and the main thing holding them back is the startup costs. That’s probably not a lot of voters.

ricecake ,

Most voters don’t have a business and never will.

The value of a net new business is that it creates more jobs and economic activity.
Most people benefit from more jobs to either work at or drive up labor demand.
Per that school of economic thought, incentivizing a new business adds more activity to the market and more opportunity for people to find ways to innovate, provide value and become profitable.
Giving money to an existing struggling business is subsidizing a businesses that’s already demonstrated that it’s not working.

However, we’re both putting too much into it. The goal is to say $50k for small business, because people like a business friendly atmosphere.
Trump gets credit for giving tax cuts to businesses for stock buyback, which only helps investors. The goal is to court people who want pro business policies without literal handouts to corporations.
