I forget how much I take this for granted until I visit the US. It’s such a hassle, I guess it’s one of those things you just get used to after while to be fair but when you’re not used to it it’s baffling.
They want the customer to be confused, stressed, and ready to just pay to make it all go away. They make the customer do a lot of work to be informed about their products.
Anything where the customer knows the situation and the price is anathema to these dorks.
Yeah, you just always assume you’ll be nickle and dimed.
People bitch about it in food delivery apps, and it is a problem there, but it’s a problem offline too. You just see it immediately on the apps, where if you’re sitting down you don’t realize till after you ate and you don’t care as much.
Ironically seeing the real total up front makes people more angry than if they don’t know till after they ate.
I’m from the US. I assume outright beforehand that any private business I have to deal with is trying to scam me, because in my experience they are. After speaking to a few contenders, you pick the one that comes off as least slimy or do whatever it is yourself if they’re all completely shitty.
My tinfoil hat theory is part of this is because conservatives want to keep people low grade mad at government. Like they keep stuff like “5% tax” highly visible so people see it and get mad, then later they can campaign on how the government is axiomatically bad etc etc.
It’s bait and switch. You display prices to attract customers (think how restaurants display their menus out front or online) and then raid them with add-ons at bill time.
Sometimes the fees are in small print somewhere on the menu. I suppose that gives the restaurant some legal protection, although I’m still totally on the “menu prices must actually show how much that food costs” team.
This entire article about AIPAC and their spending, and not once citizens united is mentioned? the 2010 supreme court ruling that is specifically allowing foreign governments to spend money influencing our elections? YES, AIPAC needs to be stopped… by ending citizens united and passing campaign finance reform, which was Bernie Sanders’ primary goal in running for president in 2016 and 2020.

This 100%. Nothing will change by eliminating one particular group. End all foreign election influence. Candidates should only be able to raise funds from domestic citizens, period.
In that entire article, the only time the word “jewish” came up was when it referred to people that AIPAC had attacked. So it’s not about it being a Jewish lobby, it’s about it being a foreign lobby.

The police department has tried to increase its diversity over the past decade, but still 7 in 10 officers are white, far more than the city’s population of 291,000, which is a little over half white, according to Census data.
I’m not a math or statistics person. On its face, I would think “7 in 10” would be close to “a little over half,” which would be 6 in 10 (to me). Can someone please ELI5 how this is “far more”?
Police initially said officers shot Handy, who was severely intoxicated, when he raised a long gun toward them in an apartment complex parking lot. But the shooting was the first since Anchorage police began wearing body cameras, and video taken by those cameras and by a neighbor’s security camera appeared to show Handy kept the gun down before police started shooting.
This is the primary issue, I think. If they only just got bodycams, they haven’t adjusted their behavior. I watch bodycam vids from YT because they’re like reality TV but real and not scripted. People often say they’re recording and the cops say, “I’m recording too,” very comfortable with the cams. I remember how much the cams were hated by cops a decade ago and now they seem fully-adopted. I think this dept hasn’t learned to live with them yet. The amount of abuse that still occurs with the cams makes me shudder to think about how police behaved before they were common.
I won’t return to a place that has a “cost of living charge.” Don’t make my dining experience about your protest. If you need to raise prices… just raise them.

We can fight as much as we want but we can never win.
Its not over yet. I was raised in one of these places. My schooling was a joke. Then I discovered the internet, and all that brainwashing they tried to do in primary school faded pretty quickly.
These kids aren’t going to be that easy to lie to with the way the internet is. Some will fall for the propaganda but many will not.
