Let’s also not forget that FFC also seems to think getting paid a day rate to be an extra is a form of sex work.

What a weird career capper this is all turning out to be.

Well, when an 85 year old rich man who is used to doing whatever they want pay people to be topless, I’m not shocked they feel they can do whatever they want 🤷‍♂️

This is only semi-related, but I love that his nephew changed his name from Nicolas Coppola to Nicolas Cage because he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor and not just getting jobs because of who his uncle was.

And then his first film under that name was Valley Girl, which very strangely had a bunch of people who were in Coppola films in the cast.

Oh, and then his first big role was in Peggy Sue Got Married, directed by… Francis Ford Coppola.

wjrii ,

That reminds me of Drew Barrymore getting her “start” as a wide-eyed moppet in ET, but also with a 200-year family history as prominent actors, including close associations with the Booth family. Not really that anybody was trying to be particularly sneaky, just funny.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

At some level, having parents in the trade gives you access to education and experience that your peers aren’t going to have. And that’s fine. Just wish people wouldn’t pretend this is an aberration in an industry that’s dummy thick with nepotism.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, she’s never even attempted to hide being a Barrymore. Nic Cage, not so much. Which is funny, because the rest of the Coppola clan apparently have no problem making movies and releasing them via American Zoetrope, Francis Ford Coppola’s own company, under their real names.

Phil Williams, the investigative reporter in this article, is an absolute treasure in Tennessee. This dude has broken open more corruption, fraud, conspiracies, government waste, etc. in his career than I can even list. As an elected official or business owner, the sight of Phil Williams with his microphone and camera crew is the thing you fear the most, but he’s very measured and patient.

He’s really banking on the crazies overthrowing the election isn’t he?

Bye , in Kamala Harris’ welcome housing boost is overdue

Zoning reforms sound great.

One of my biggest issues with increasing housing is that many Americans store their wealth in their house. Home ownership is the retirement plan for many, or the generational wealth plan. So how can we build housing without devaluing existing housing?

The answer is to build more multi-family housing, which doesn’t really compete with single family housing for price. The former is mostly for rent, while the later is for owning.

finestnothing ,

Housing values are extremely artificially inflated right now though. Housing prices have gone up at least 30-50% in a lot of areas since 2019, even non-updated poorly maintained houses are up that amount.

DandomRude , (edited ) in Trump pulls out of interview after paper questions dubious claims about crime rate
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I watched the debate between Trump and Biden and could hardly believe that there were no fact checks at all from the moderators. Sure, it would have been good if Biden had pointed out more clearly that almost every statement Trump made was factually incorrect. But can you really just tell any tall tales in your presidential debates without even mentioning any facts? That seems absurd. Is that the norm for presidential debates in the US? Or is it just that Trump would not have participated if there were fact checks?

IamSparticles ,

Do you think for a second that Trump would agree to a debate with fact checking?

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

No, but I thought the US public wouldn’t let him get away with never engaging in a (factual) debate. That would make him look weak, because that’s how democracy usually works. You know, arguments and counter-arguments - that sort of thing.

kent_eh ,

It would have been best if there was fact checking as part of the debate, but as you speculated, there’s no way Trump would agree to that. And, to be fair, it’s probably a difficult thing to do live and accurately in timely manner.

However, other news agencies were doing fact checking during and following the debate.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, it’s certainly not easy to check facts live. But you can at least be well prepared, especially as the questions are asked by the journalists and they should also know the usual claims made by the candidates. I also don’t think it’s necessary to check every figure. I just mean that it makes sense to name obvious false statements as such - Trump has made enough of them, and most of them were anything but new. And yes, it is of course also true that there are fact-checks after the fact, but I think that this is often not noticed at all. The presidential debates are an event that many people watch, but unfortunately only a few inform themselves afterwards. That’s why I think it’s necessary to expose at least the grossest untruths immediately.

Diplomjodler3 ,

The media are owned by the oligarchs and those mostly back Trump. Simple as that.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t argue with that.

I don’t think so. It’s just the same lies he repeats over and over again.

The contents of the MyPillow contained the perfect model! Its large and lumpy texture work perfectly for our binding agents to create the industrial shapes we need. We keep a stack of them in the office when we’re demonstrating to clients. We’ll rip one open and dump the lumps on the desk and demonstrated ‘See these large jagged lumps of foam? The solvents will soak in here and here making all these huge lumps stick together in an unorganized mass’ the clients really love it. Some ask for a MyPillow of their own to tear open and dump out.”

@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

It’s probably not a good look for your film when you start off with “Everyone thought my other films sucked” and none of those allegations were true. It sort of sounds like you made a flop. Would have been funny if he’d included a few glowing quotes about Godfather III, though.

Also, incredibly ballsy to include “Dracula” on your list of panned films, given that the movie was mid at best.

oh we so know this came from ai. its funny because I work in monitoring and its so easy to get data crossed when accessed in a simple dump type manner.
