Making America Laugh Again

catloaf , in Chart: US clean energy investment is soaring thanks to climate law

Is there a corresponding shift to green energy production? Because spending is good, but I want to see actual reduction in fossil fuel use and an increase in green energy use.

Voroxpete ,

Yes

TheDemonBuer , (edited )
@TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world avatar

The true measure of success is the percentage of our total energy consumption that comes from renewables/fossil fuels.

In 2013, renewables accounted for 5.8% of total energy consumption, fossil fuels accounted for 84.4% of total energy consumption.

In 2023, renewables accounted for 9.8% of total energy consumption, fossil fuels accounted for 80.6% of total energy consumption.

It’s certainly moving in the right direction, but much more needs to be done.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

That was signed 2 years ago. I imagine that this wouldn’t appear in the renewable production metrics for a few years. Energy infrastructure projects don’t go from investment to output quickly. You have planning, hiring, permitting, building, etc. There is also a lag time from when a bill is signed to when an administration can staff offices to accept and review grants, cut checks, etc.

The federal government usually issues a report about annual energy production at the end of the calendar year. The report usually gets posted in Feb or Mar after the information has been collected and synthesized.

We might see a bump in the 2024 report, assuming Trump doesn’t win and we actually get a 2024 report. That said, I wouldn’t expect to see this money impacting the grid for a few more years out.

worldwidewave , in Google threatened tech influencers unless they ‘preferred’ the Pixel

The agreement tells participants they’re “expected to feature the Google Pixel device in place of any competitor mobile devices.” It also notes that “if it appears other brands are being preferred over the Pixel, we will need to cease the relationship between the brand and the creator.” The link to the form appears to have since been shut down.

This is some Disney Influencer-level bullshit, where they just dole out premium perks to influencers who will endlessly and exclusively positively shill their shit.

grubbyweasel , in Google threatened tech influencers unless they ‘preferred’ the Pixel

Google’s official Pixel review program for publications like The Verge requires no such stipulations. (And, to be clear, The Verge would never accept such terms, in accordance with our ethics policy.)

So then, what is Team Pixel, exactly? Officially, it’s a program handled by PR agency 1000heads that seeds early units to influencers and superfans to drum up interest as brand ambassadors. While Google partners with 1000heads, it doesn’t directly run the program, and there are distinct differences from the traditional reviews program. For example, journalists and influencers in the official reviews program often get briefed and given products under embargo before or during an event. Team Pixel participants get the devices shortly after launch but before the public — all in exchange for some coverage on social media. For smaller creators, this can be a big leg up in terms of access.

extremely critical context here, this is kind of a non story tbh

ZapBeebz_ , in Statue of late civil rights leader John Lewis replaces more than 100-year-old Confederate monument

Last time I went to the National Portrait Gallery in DC, the Hall of Presidents directly abutted the Civil Rights area.

Trumps presidential portrait (a photo, not a painting, as distinguished by the medium being listed as “inkjet printer” on the plaque) was on one side of a freestanding wall on the center of the room, and maybe 30ft away was a very large portrait of John Lewis.

The impression given was that Trump was losing a staring contest with John Lewis, which felt very apt.

the medium being listed as “inkjet printer” on the plaque

The one thing I will give the Trump Administration is that they accomplished a lot of things despite being lazy as fuck. Most of the things they accomplished weren’t worth accomplishing, but…

ZapBeebz_ ,

There’s a not-insignificant chance it was the only non-painted exhibit in the entire museum. Everything else I saw was a painting…

On a side note, highly recommend the National Portrait Gallery if you’re ever in DC.

The thing with civil war in a borderless, increasingly small world is that it is very difficult to be sure that you will survive it…even as a captain of industry.

some_guy , in They All Got Mysterious Brain Diseases. They’re Fighting to Learn Why.

Over the course of several days, Beatty slipped further into unreality. He told his wife the year was 1992 and wondered aloud why his hair had turned white. Then he started having seizures. His arms began to move in uncontrollable jerks and twitches. By the end of May, he was dead.

This is frightening.

But these anxieties and sleep problems quickly gave way to more acute presentations: limb pain and trouble balancing, teeth chattering and shocklike muscle spasms so violent that some patients could no longer sleep in the same bed as their spouses. Many patients developed vision problems; some experienced terrifying hallucinations. (“Like daydreaming,” Marrero says, “but a nightmare.”) As the sickness continued to manifest, muscles wasted away and cognitive decline set in. Some patients died; others plateaued in various states of distress.

And I made it about two more paragraphs after this before closing the window. This is just too much bad news first thing in the morning. Sigh.

some_guy , in Google threatened tech influencers unless they ‘preferred’ the Pixel

The company’s invite-only Team Pixel program — which seeds Pixel products to influencers before public availability — stipulated that participating influencers were not allowed to feature Pixel products alongside competitors, and those who showed a preference for competing phones risked being kicked out of the program.

Good move right after a judge ruled you’re a monopoly using your position to influence the market. This doesn’t reinforce that you engage in bad behavior at all. /s

Wheres the evidence she ‘never failed a gender test’ that was the fact that made everyone upset. Jk did nothing hundreds of thousands of other ppl who read the articles about this also said. You gender warriors are nuts, your hate for this woman is hilarious.

flerp ,

It’s impossible to prove that someone ‘never failed a gender test’ you can only prove that someone passed or failed a specific test. Maybe if you understood logic and critical thinking a bit better it might help you in your life. I’d recommend learning.
