Darkard , in Liz Truss leaves stage over ‘I crashed the economy’ lettuce banner

I’ve learned how powerful the unelected bureaucracy is.

You fucking clown, you are the unelected bureaucracy. It was you (unelected) and the people you put in charge of the economy (unelected) who fucked everything up.

Carrolade ,

It’s also a little amusing that what brought her down was ultimately the markets doing their thing. Assets in the free market changing in price is not the work of some unelected bureaucracy, that’s capitalism.

Liz Truss was brought down by capitalism, and greedy investors being smarter than her at predicting the future. She just can’t say that, or perhaps refuses to believe it.

frezik ,

Capitalism is something that’s supposed to be forced on other people, not them.

I don’t get the impression that there’s a long shelf life for those folks. “Joe the Plumber” rose to conservative fame even without committing a felony. After the right fell in love with him for his 15 minutes, he had a “record deal”, co-wrote a book, and was also hired as a junior reporter for the right wing Pajamas Media (whatever that is) and 4 years later he’s working at a Jeep factory in Toledo source

418_im_a_teapot ,

After high school, Wurzelbacher enlisted in the United States Air Force, and chose plumbing (Air Force Specialty Code 3E451, or Utility Systems Specialist) as his area of training.[4] He was stationed in Alaska and North Dakota. Wurzelbacher left the Air Force in 1996 and worked as a plumber’s assistant, but then switched careers and started working for the telecommunications company Global Crossing.

He was trained in plumbing and had some limited experience.

FlyingSquid , in 'Worst nightmare of my life': Solitary confinement rises at Houston-area ICE detention center
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is just fucking disgusting.

The PHR and Harvard reports revealed more than 14,000 solitary confinement placements nationwide during a five-year period ending in September 2023, spurring legislation to enact harsher oversight. Since then, the Houston Landing has identified an additional five cases at Montgomery Processing Center, including Bautista’s. Four exceeded the 15 days of confinement defined by the UN as a form of torture.

Private prisons for immigrant detention have increased since President Joe Biden took office, despite a pledge to reduce the practice. More than 90 percent of detained immigrants are in facilities run by private prison companies, compared to 81 percent during the last year of the Trump administration. GEO Group, the private prison company that runs Montgomery Processing Center, reached a record $1 billion in profits from ICE detention in 2022.

The use of solitary confinement in federal prisons has also increased despite Biden’s pledge to reduce the practice.

Bautista filed more than 20 complaints. He protested his prolonged detention. He requested medical help for tooth and back pain. He filed a maintenance request to flush the toilet because of its vomit-inducing smell. He alleged physical abuse by staff. He requested legal calls. He couldn’t understand why he was there.

Not only is illegal immigration a civil crime, not a criminal one, his wife is a citizen. He was in jail for domestic violence and I will not defend that, but that is not why he was put in solitary. It was only after they discovered his immigration status that it happened. He did nothing to deserve this. No one deserves what actually happens in solitary confinement. It is not just being put in a cell away from everyone else. It’s horrific. I’m not going to dig up examples because it’s too sickening, but you can find plenty of former inmates describe why they now have severe PTSD.

I feel like a lot of these people are unprepared for the civil war they claim to want

When you live your whole life in a cushy environment with more competent people than you making sure that the lights stay on and the food keeps coming, it’s easy to have this weird fantasy that you are God’s chosen person and you can wander around believing and doing whatever you want. Just looking at this woman’s face, though, I feel like she would be the first to abandon her convictions and say yes judge I’ll do whatever you want once the cell door swings closed for real. Maybe I am wrong but that is the feeling I get from looking at her.

When one of my buddies got married, his wife wanted it done at her family church back home even though neither are currently religious.

Part of the ceremony included her to swear to always obey any request her husband makes, no matter what.

And not in like an offhand mention thing during vows that gets glossed over.

It was a separate part where she had to explicitly agree to do anything her husband says.

He stills pulls it out as a joke when they disagree over stupid shit.

FlyingSquid ,

Childhood indoctrination is a very powerful thing to be able to break away from. When you’re told every day to do exactly what the pastor says Jesus wants you to do from the point that you are able to understand the “do this or else” concept, it’s hard to shake that off even if you feel it’s wrong.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. It’s very difficult, it can even be deeply traumatizing for some. You can get shunned by your own family. You can get cast out from the only community you know.

Valmond ,

It’s not only you are told every day, it is like that when you are born into it. It has always been like that, it bacomes the cornerstone of what you will go from.

Very hard to break I imagine.

bobs_monkey ,

Yup, and in my experience, it’s strongest in Catholics. Like my wife hasn’t been to church or practiced anything in probably 20 years, but a lot of the tenets are deeply rooted in her, most notably guilt (and guilting other people, especially her family)

Probably why Catholic girls are some of the most wacko and most fun in a particular regard. All that repressed emotion.

aniki ,

holy fucking stereotypes Batman…

bobs_monkey ,

It ain’t stereotyping, it’s experienced-based analysis. Catholic girls (from around the world, not just the US, nor of a particular ethnicity or nationality) tend to operate similarly in the regards I mentioned. Not to say it’s a bad thing either (quite the opposite on that last bit), it’s just apparent that their Catholic upbringing had deeply rooted effects on some behavioral patterns that were common amongst those girls I’ve known.

kent_eh ,

I have no idea why it’s taken so long for women to leave the Abrahmic religions.

Leaving a religion often results in shunning and the loss of ones entire social network; for many vulnerable people (like women caught in a patriarchal cult) this is a cost too high to bear.

It’s a culture cultivated specifically to make it difficult to leave.
