@hark@lemmy.world avatar

I often see the 25% figure cited, but my own receipts have shown 50%+ increases in the same time period. I never buy brand name or much in the way of snacks. Is the 25% figure obtained by making substitutions like switching to store brand? I don’t have much leeway there since I already go for no frills groceries. I would be very interested in knowing how they determine “only” a 25% increase in prices over that period of time.

skuzz ,

The quality of store brand stuff seems on the decline as well.

paysrenttobirds , in Trump-backed GOP platform says states should be allowed to extend constitutional rights to embryos

Doesn’t this bely the “toned down language on abortion” that leaves it to the states? Because once it’s a constitutional issue, the supreme Court can overturn any state’s protection of abortion rights. Just the idea that a ball of unconscious cells has the same or more right to life as the 24yr old women it lives in is disgusting to me. His platform is just more vague, it still contains all of the possibilities of the original.

Can we at least deny rights to the sperms and eggs? How about ensuring the right to contraception

MagicShel ,

They don’t care about lying or hypocrisy, so unfortunately your first point is moot to them. They have no honor to go back on.

paysrenttobirds ,

They are making this new list to keep voters who were unhappy with project 2025 so I think it’s important to point out it doesn’t actually exclude any of those provisions. It’s not a promise to be more moderate and actually winking at the far right the whole time.

Lemminary , in Trump-appointed judge forced to resign as damning ethics report details sex misconduct

Crazy that the line is at sexual misconduct but undermining a democracy is ok.

Lost_My_Mind ,

I mean…at the very least it’s consistant. I never had an issue with Bill Clinton getting a BJ. I felt like Hillary should have the right to be mad, but everyone else should fuck off.

The right on the other hand lost their shit. They made it into a 4 year big deal. If Bill had just told the truth on the stand, that he got sucked off and loved it, then they’d have no tools to impeach him. But to them the sexual deviancy was the big deal to them.

I guess same here. They don’t care about laws or the country, but if you include sexual misdoings, they faint like a karen in a church seeing people outside having fun.

AnarchoSnowPlow ,

It’s not though. See Thomas. Also the seemingly never ending parade of GOP officials.

If it’s their team it’s NBD, I’m very surprised this has had any consequences. I bet it’s more he bit the hand that fed him.

Today ,

Like stormy. He doesn’t say he didn’t pay the media to influence an election. Apparently he thinks that part was ok. He throws a fit saying he didn’t have sex with her.

ShepherdPie ,

That’s just a facade they put up in public. Newt Gingrich lead the charge on that impeachment and at the time was cheating on his wife (later to deliver her divorce papers at the hospital where she was receiving cancer treatments and leaving her and their children completely broke).

Furthermore, you can look at all the scandals with organizations like the Boy Scouts of America or the Catholic church and they still get unwavering support from the right.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They always denied it was about the sex though. Even at the time. We all knew it was, but they constantly were claiming it was about lying on the stand.

And then Larry Flynt inadvertently helped them on that front when trying to shame them by putting out a report detailing all the Republican congresspeople who had affairs. I appreciate what he tried to do, but that made it even easier for them to say it wasn’t about the sex since no one got rid of them for an affair.

GreyEyedGhost ,

It was about the letter after his name. If sex was illegal (and I think sex with subordinates often should be), they would have gone for that. Lying under oath is illegal, so they went for that. This wasn’t some principled mission, this was to stop the guy they disagreed with using whatever would stick.

InternetUser2012 ,

You’d think they’d have a problem with mr 34 felonies being a rapist and paying a pornstar for sex while his pregnant wife was at home.

I_Fart_Glitter , in US prepares for bird flu pandemic with $176M Moderna vaccine deal

Oh for fucks sake.

In a survey last month, which captured data from 54 percent of affected farms at the time, more than 60 percent of farmers said they continued to move cattle off their infected farms after the onset of clinical signs of infection in their animals.

mozz OP ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

There are farm workers that work next to infected animals every day in the US, right now, in many states. Sometimes they get bird flu. Just a handful of times that we know of, so far, which probably means it's happened a decent amount more than that.

The official guidance is "try not to get any of the fluids you are coming in contact with on you or anything, that might be really bad, good luck."

It's not a great strategy overall, in my opinion, to be honest.

Ranvier ,

I agree. I’m also worried about the lack of incentives for testing. Currently you get $75 for being tested. That’s fine, but they should get more if they test positive. They will lose more money from that from missed work time, they could even lose their job after a positive test. So many refuse. We don’t have a complete picture of what’s happening right now with the lack of testing participation.

www.usatoday.com/story/news/…/73842450007/

Or we could even have something like nationwide paid sick leave and none of this would be an issue. But no, that would be crazy.

Also, many of these farm workers are likely undocumented immigrants, further complicating things.

catloaf ,

Getting bird flu as an ag worker should be a worker’s comp claim.

FiremanEdsRevenge , in Trump-appointed judge forced to resign as damning ethics report details sex misconduct

According to the report, Kindred created a hostile work environment by incessantly “discuss[ing] his past dating life, his romantic preferences, his sex life, the law clerks’ boyfriends and dating lives, his divorce, his interest in and communications with potential romantic or sexual partners, and his disparaging opinions of his colleagues. He also made disparaging comments about public and political figures. Some examples of these comments include: ‘I was a huge hit at dinner Partly due to how much s— I talked about Sarah Palin’; ‘I told a republican [state] senator to eat a d—’; and ‘[a senator] is worried that I can kick [] his a–.’”

He also rated people based on “f—ability” in the presence of subordinates, and retaliated against clerks who came forward to say they were uncomfortable with his behavior.

paysrenttobirds , in The real lesson for America in the French and British elections

I really feel this article underrates the Congressional races happening at the same time and more of a comparison to the British and French elections. What I take from this is that the strategies available to the Democrats are constrained by the two party system, and almost completely hamstrung in the presidential election with a candidate who is incumbent. But it would be more interesting to compare what’s happening among the legislature where there are (or were before primaries) more candidates and more likelihood of creative alliances.

cabillaud ,
@cabillaud@lemmy.world avatar

The big flaw of this article is that it compares legislative elections to presidential elections In France too, presidential elections end up in a duel between far right and an unpopular and disconnected candidate

ETA: CMS has to know this. They also know single-payer if the wtg. But then corporate overlords would be cut out and politicians are having none of it. The same people who are claims processing now could work directly for CMS and I'm sure Medicare Administrative Contractors could still get plenty of federal contracts, although I'd prefer all claims processors work directly for the government.
