I don’t even know what to say, just completely disgustingly unhinged behavior. The dehumanization of the houseless needs to stop.

Thanks for sharing. Hard read but very compelling.

I usually favor no charges in these cases. Heard a recent one though where mom and dad were all drugged up when they got home at 11:30 pm. At 10:30 am they realized they hadn’t heard from the baby at all and sent their other kid to check on baby. Kid says baby isn’t in the crib. Then they found baby dead in the hot car.

Out partying and drugged up and forget baby for nearly half a day? That warrants charges.

LostCause , in Teen sent 'hobo hunting' text before killing homeless woman with pellet gun: prosecutors

In my city something similar is going on, three homeless people have already been stabbed while sleeping at night. I honestly don‘t understand the depravity humans get up to.

ArugulaZ ,

Look up "brazen bull" and you'll get a better understanding of just how shitty our species really is.

dan1101 , in She invited four people over for lunch. A week later, three were dead.

So the 3 of the 4 people she invited died, the 4th needs a liver transplant. She fed her children something different and they’re fine. Her ex husband got very sick.

Hmm.

A real head scratcher…

To be fair, anyone in her family could’ve added poison to the food though.

Sounds like the setup to Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

veroxii ,

2 of the dead people were her parents-in-law. So her ex husband’s parents.

Her ex-husband was supposed to be eating with the others who were poisoned (who happened to be the ex-husband’s parents and aunt) but he didn’t make it there.

Keep in mind, however, that this is a small regional community in Australia so the likelihood of people being part of extended family relations like this is much more likely to occur.

The ex-husband got very sick on a different occasion where he had a “mystery” bout of severe gastroenteritis where he was in a critical condition and put into an induced coma and at two points his loved ones were brought in to say their farewells to him because they thought that he wasn’t going to pull through, although after a few weeks he managed to recover.

sadreality , in Teen sent 'hobo hunting' text before killing homeless woman with pellet gun: prosecutors

And now we will spend millions of dollars on this trash while homeless people get jack shit.

Amazing how this system works!

OldWoodFrame , in Americans' credit card debt hits a record $1 trillion

Inflation exists, credit card debt is always hitting records.

Hitting a debt record is really just saying “back to pre-pandemic levels” and with inflation so high in the meantime we’re really not even there yet.

It’s like when the winning presidential candidate has the most votes anyone ever got. There’s more people now, it would be embarrassing if it didn’t happen.

MadMonkey , in She invited four people over for lunch. A week later, three were dead.

I’m all for innocent until proven guilty, but man it would take some good explaining as to how she and her kids survived her own dinner.

My kids would be fine - they hate mushrooms (and most vegetables) right now. Me, on the other hand? I’d be dead.

He is “a good kid with a warm heart” he lawyer says.

His lawyer needs to be Locked up with him.

520 ,

Because good kids with good hearts definitely launch unprovoked deadly attacks against the vulnerable /s

insanitycentral ,

But he wasn’t meaning to murder, this good kid was just trying to quell their boredom by causing bodily injury to people they they perceive as less than a person. /s I’d bet money that if this kid isn’t charged, they’ll become a cop.

a good kid with a warm heart

is a good way to describe a psychopath if you never actually dealt with one.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

The trigger puller was Innes but that line was about Hopkins. He’s being charged because he supposedly drove Innes there.

I’d also argue that at 19 he is no longer a “kid”.

Pratai ,

The driver is as guilty as the trigger puller.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

I didn’t say he wasn’t, I was just clarifying the names involved and who that line was about.

neptune ,

Lawyers have a job to do, and it’s provide the best possible defense, to even the most disgusting of criminals, because our justice system relies on everyone having a right to an adversarial defense.

Pratai ,

This is not a defense. This is pandering to media.

some_guy ,

It’s in his client’s interest to speak kindly of him in the media before jury selection. He’s still doing his job.

yata ,

Sure, his job just happens to perfectly match his personality of being a lying asshole.

GBU_28 ,

Sorry but managing media is part of defense.

stevehobbes ,

I mean…. In the USA you’re entitled to a vigorous defense.

Vilifying the lawyer isn’t going to do any good. He’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing.

This kid, if he did it, is a shitbird. The lawyer is doing what they’re supposed to do.

Hobo ,

I’m not a lawyer but I went and checked the ABA because I was pretty sure the term “zealous advocate” was in the duties and responsibilities. Here’s what I found on the ABA site, “As advocate, a lawyer zealously asserts the client’s position under the rules of the adversary system.”[1]

Lawyers, especially defense lawyers, get a lot of hate for being zealous about even the most vile client’s defense, but I promise that if anyone reading this ever needs a lawyer you’ll be glad as fuck that they are duty bound to not half ass your defense.

[1]americanbar.org/…/model_rules_of_professional_con…

rambaroo ,

You all keep acting like he was forced to take the case. He wasn’t. He did it for the money, knowing full well what a scumbag his client is. I’m not about to sympathize with someone who’s making a fuckton of money by literally shilling for an actual psychopath.

Hobo , (edited )

Say you were accused of killing a baby. A news article ran that said you texted, “Lol about to go eat some babies!” You look like an absolute psychopath. Do you deserve representation?

Going further you know you didn’t kill the baby. The message was an unrelated tasteless joke about religion. You’ve been convicted in the court of public opinion by the aforementioned article about your deeds though. Do you think it would be fair to you, in an adversarial justice system, to not have the absolute best representation? Do you think, in those circumstances, that you should only be allowed to hire a lawyer that will half ass your case?

Article doesn’t say anything about whether they grow locally to where the poisoning happened, or whether the person who cooked them also says that she picked them. These are the first things I’d want to know.

I believe they grow around the world, and iirc from a news report, she declined to comment on where/if she picked them. Could be wrong, though.

Mdotaut801 , in Americans’ credit card debt hits a record $1 trillion

I recently stopped paying my credit cards and negotiated with the credit card companies to settle each one. Went from owing $25,000 and some change to just a little over half. Sure, my credit took a huge hit and it took MONTHS of back and forth with both companies but I paid them both off in lump sums and now I’m credit card debt free. I’m not advising others do this because I don’t know your situation. Luckily I already own a home and a car so I don’t need my credit pulled for anything anytime soon. Divorce completely fucked up my finances(she incurred a lot of debt on a card that was in my name and used it for massive purchases and left me holding the bag). Some of the debt was mine, but the lion’s share had to do with her purchases or me using the credit lines to pay her so I could keep the house. Ugh. Fuck credit cards. I’ll never have one again. Absolute fucking nightmare.

Tikiporch ,

Why did your credit take a huge hit, due to non payment for X months?

TechnoBabble ,

That’s generally how it works.
