autotldr Bot , in FBI finds 200 sex trafficking victims, 59 missing children in two-week sweep

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The FBI found 200 sex trafficking victims and more than 125 suspect during a two-week child explotation operation in July, federal officials said Tuesday.

“Sex traffickers exploit and endanger some of the most vulnerable members of our society and cause their victims unimaginable harm," Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement.

“This operation, which located 59 actively missing children, builds on the tremendous work the FBI has undertaken over many years to rescue minor victims and arrest those responsible for these unspeakable crimes.

The FBI-led initiative in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) “focused on identifying and locating victims of sex trafficking and investigating and arresting individuals and criminal enterprises involved in both child sex and human trafficking,” federal officials said.

“Behind every statistic, there is a person with dreams, aspirations, and the right to live a life free from child sex trafficking and exploitation," NCMEC President and CEO Michelle DeLaune said in a statement.

Didn’t meta (Facebook) also threatened to remove news from Australia when a similar law passed? And they did nothing.

BlinkAndItsGone ,

Because they struck a deal with the media companies in that case. That hasn’t happened with Canada. They’re gonna do it this time, and I’m sure Canada will be fine without getting its news through Facebook.

Damn good they got caught, but insane how wide the problem seems to be. 59 missing children??

Dark_Arc ,
@Dark_Arc@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of the time these are either people who entered the country illegally or are runaways. It’s not an excuse, but it definitely limits the amount of law enforcement eyes that would otherwise be looking (i.e. a handful of families report missing children vs dozens).

cowfodder ,

Tell me you haven’t read the law without saying you haven’t read the law. This isn’t about the government blocking anything, this is about allowing religious extremists to sue over things that they deem immoral.

CookieJarObserver ,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes, suing means they’d have to actually have legal reach over it… They don’t… Ask telegram for example, they get court letters all day and just ignore them.

And suing? Everyone can sue for everything, question is if the judge deems it reasonable.

Scooter411 ,
@Scooter411@lemmy.ml avatar

The age verification system that the state came up with requires you to enter personal identification information, like a drivers license number. I don’t trust the porn sites with that info - in fact, porn hub doesn’t want that responsibility and has actually blocked IP addresses from Utah. So, actually, it looks like they can.

CookieJarObserver ,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

They blocked ip Adresses from there, just use a VPN like a normal person. Porn hub is btw the most compliant of all, there are mountains of other sites.

Second, this isn’t about access to pornography. This is just testing the waters. They want absolute control over what people do on the internet.

“Well it’s not a big deal, just use a different source!” - it’s actually a bigger problem than just this one industry

“Why don’t you shoot the politicians!” - I don’t personally feel like that’s the answer.

“Check mate!” - ok, one last reply then I’ll stop feeding the troll.

afraid_of_zombies ,

You can use a bunch of free ones available or roll your own. Many of the big cloud providers will let you host at least one VM for free. Spin up say an Ubuntu VM and setup a VPN with that. There are many tutorials out there to help or you could reach out to the Linux community. You will find them to be rather eager to help you with Linux stuff.

Talking about under 2 hours of work and you will get a skill for life.

Scooter411 ,

BonesOfTheMoon , in FBI finds 200 sex trafficking victims, 59 missing children in two-week sweep

How are 59 children missing? I can’t wrap my head around that.

bluGill ,

There are a lot more than 59 missing children at any time. There are hundreds of millions of people in the US, a few will go missing all the time.

most missing children are with their other parent who is hiding from court ordered custody, and thus don't even know they are missing. However kidnapping (often for sex) does happen once in a while, it takes time for the FBI to track these down and in the mean time those doing it have time to kidnap a 58 more kids.

there is nothing unique about the US here. all countries have similar problems, as criminals are everywhere and it takes time for law enforcement to track down any particular criminal.

Spiracle , (edited )
@Spiracle@kbin.social avatar

Children are easy to carry and often easily accessible. Sadly, it is often as simple as driving close to one in a car, then pulling them inside.

Actually, that can work for adults as well, according to some vids and news stories I’ve seen. Many crimes are incredibly easy. Just like the death toll and environmental/monetary/health cost of cars, it’s just not mainstream knowledge.

And that doesn’t include all the other causes. Runaways are missing, and often intentionally trying to stay missing. Parents taking children and leaving the country without telling anyone can make them all be "missing". Bureaucratic issues can mean that a simple move leaves children "missing" in one official register or another. Some people or families are simply not "in the system", living off-the-grid.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

I guess a lot of them are foster teens who are in group homes or such and aren’t that easy to track. Ugh.

MostlyBirds ,
@MostlyBirds@lemmy.world avatar

Kalkaline , in Giving birth in America continues to get deadlier
@Kalkaline@lemmy.one avatar

Universal healthcare solves a lot of this. Not all of it. You still have to make healthcare available to those in rural areas. You still have to give high quality care to everyone regardless of skin color, beliefs, or other cultural factors. When people aren’t afraid of the bill, they go to the doctor more, but it doesn’t remove all the barriers to care.

FarFarAway ,

I’m not sure that access to care is particularly the issue. I mean, it’s part of it, but when you have women like Beyonce and Venus Williams describing thier near death experiences while giving birth, there’s something else going on here.

Doctor education and bias, I believe, have alot to do with this issue. Women of color, esp. Black women, have the same rates of complications as white women do, but they die at a much higher rate. Many doctors don’t want to listen to thier patients or don’t recognize that diseases prevalent in communities of color take a larger toll than expected on a pregnant woman. Some doctors just cant or plain don’t want to take the time to ensure that the pregnancy is deveolping in a healthy fashion for both the mother and the child.

And, now, with abortion bans driving doctors out of states that already have an issue, the problem is only going to get worse.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@lemmy.one avatar

Sorry if I wasn’t clear earlier, part of the point of that 3rd line was trying to acknowledge bias in medicine.

FarFarAway ,

Ah, sorry.
